Owner description: East Coast Ferries Ltd. Ferry Service between Deer Island NB and Campobello NB, and Deer Island NB and Eastport Maine. Come Sail With Us!

We took the Deer Island to Campobello ferry on July 4th. and were the only car on the crossing. (Everyone was heading for the 4th of July festivities at Eastport.) These ferries are small, but seem to keep a tight schedule so you can get right on, have a relaxing ride, and take pictures easily during the crossing.

We found the terminal fairly easy and able to gain entry on the next ferry. They run every half hour "on the dot". Hint #1: We also had time to drive past the ferry entrance and take a few pictures of the light house you will see as you leave port. The ship mates are very professional and guide you easily on and off the ferry. Do not worry about being too tight, we had lots of room and could exit the auto to view the scenery on the 20 minute cruise back and forth. Exiting is just as easy and you are on your way. Bathrooms on board. Hint #2: just as you arrive in Deer Isle there is a great gift shop on the right where all items are made by the owners. They are also a great resource with ideas on how to best use your time. Hint#3: Travel to the campground at the end of the island and look for whales and dolphin and the big whirlpool as tide is coming in. The only drawback was the lack of places to eat...the 45th is open and there is a small take out that is opens Thursdays on. Lots of coves to explore, people are very friendly. A good day trip[, Plan on 3-4 hours to see it all.

We were staying in St Andrews and was told a visit to Deer Island was a good day out. We drove to Back Bay and couldn't believe that the crossing was free. Very punctual and very easy to get on and off. It is very easy to drive round the island and we even saw deer! Had a lobster roll lunch which was good too. If we had more time, we would have done some island hopping, so one for another visit.

They do not take credit cards! Must have cash or check!
Now that I said that, we loved the ferry . The people were friendly and helpful and seemed to be enjoying their jobs. They loaded and unloaded quickly. You can get out of your car and look around at the beauty of these unspoiled islands as you ride.
We saw a pod of dolphins as we rode. I think maybe also see whales but we didn't see any today. Saves on gas and travel time and is fun besides. Only wish they were open, at least on weekends until November.

The ferry was small but only took 15 minutes from Eastport to Deer Island. The crew was helpful answering questions about the area and on the way back, slowed way down so we could watch a whale.
