“A good first impression”
Reviewed August 9, 2014

We have enjoyed meals in this venue for a number of years but this was our first visit since the restaurant changed hands ... and it won't be our last! With friends who had enjoyed a lunch here recently, we arrived for an early dinner before heading out to see a play at Mount Tabor. Because of our timing, the restaurant wasn't crowded and we enjoyed prompt and friendly service. We were seated in the window area where we glimpsed, with amusement, the tourist traffic - pedestrian and vehicular. It was vintage vehicle night at Canadian Tire so there was a parade of highly polished cars driving along Main Street.

Our excellent server told us about the prix fixe meals -- 3 courses for $29. For the entrée, the men chose the prime rib and the women chose the grouper prepared with with a wine bruschetta sauce.

We were all pleased with our choices, as well as with our appetizers and desserts. And the bread was warmed...

We had a coupon for an entrée from one of the Rotary fund raiser booklets and we were pleasantly surprised that we were given credit for a complete meal. With a couple or glasses of wine and a couple of beers among the group, the bill was reasonable. But reasonable doesn't matter if the food is not good. At Beck and Call we enjoyed both good food and good value.

“Underwhelmed”
Reviewed July 30, 2014 via mobile

My wife and I stopped for a lunch date on a break from camping. The service was okay however the food was disappointing. We both had different burgers however my wife interested in the toppings from another burger. We were a little taken back with a $3 charge for that. Both of the burgers were dry and the "homemade" gravy on my poutine was just not good. Extra charge for mayo?!

“Wow, such a disappointment”
Reviewed July 26, 2014

I guess that I thought that a restaurant where Currah's used to be would be good. Wrong....
The restaurant on a Saturday night was 1/2 full with 2 servers. At 1st the service was good, although I found it funny that they don't have a wine list after all, it's the county and we like to see and drink county wines. The waiter rhymed off the list and said that they were all the same price, rather odd, never heard that before. We chose Sandbanks, which we knew as she couldn't really tell us anything about the other wines. The wine arrived at the table and she asked "do you want me to pour it for you"? Really.....??? So we all ordered appetizers and entrees. The escargot was covered in greasy yellow cheese, not really that warm served with grocery store garlic bread and it just gets better. I order pan fried pickerel. I have never seen a pickerel fillet that was pan fried that anemic and it didn't taste at all like pickerel. It was luke warm, pale and soggy. We were with friends for their anniversary so I didn't send it back, but hid it under a over-cooked cool baked potato and over cooked green beans. The other entree's were fish and chips which were processed formed halibut fillets. Wow, we live in a garden rich county with amazing local produce and this is what we are served. Then we waited for 3/4 hour for someone to clear the table and finally gave up and went to the reception desk and paid the bill. Poor service, low quality food but in a prime location. Amazing how they are still in business. Don't be fooled that Currah's old location offers the same quality of food, it doesn't and the service is just as bad as the food. Try Portabella's, Blumen or Merrill inn if you are dining in Picton.

“pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

Stopped in for lunch on Sunday because it is fairly new and we wanted to check it out. We were pleasantly surprised at the varied dishes on the menu. The four of us ordered different dishes but we were all impressed with the taste and presentation. One complaint would be that they don't make mixed drinks and they don't have any domestic beer on tap. We asked to see a dinner menu and were again impressed with the dishes offered. We will be back for dinner next time. All in all it was a good experience.

“Yummy!!!”

What an incredible taste experience. Just ate supper here with two friends tonight. Had excellent service...thanks Cathie! The food was fabulous! We each had a different special and all were incredible. The asparagus soup starter was the best I have ever tasted. The coconut cream pie was scrumptious....put this as a must visit on your next drive through the county!
