“Had a wonderful girls' weekend away at the Claramount”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

Myself and 3 other female friends spent the past weekend at the Claramount. We had planned to go two weeks previously but had to postpone at the last minute because of weather, and they were very very accommodating and made it all work for us. The front desk was always helpful when we had questions as well.

We were given the two rooms (6 and 7) that take up the entire top floor and they were huge. The pictures on their site don't do the size of the space justice. Both had sitting areas (more than one in each room), enormous bathrooms, comfy beds, lots of windows, and being on the top floor alone was perfect for us, it felt incredibly private.

We ate dinner and breakfast on site and both meals were delicious and the service was great. I really need to commend our server, Lesley, she was the best and we had a great time with her for both meals.

We also all booked spa services and used the pool/sauna. Everyone enjoyed their spa treatments and it was really relaxing to just check in and never have to leave the property - especially in winter. The salt water pool is relaxing to float around in (use the pool noodles for this!), but it's not deep enough for diving etc, if that's what you are expecting.

Tip - if you are nearby in Wellington, make sure to visit Tall Poppies Cafe, and if you there in summer, I recommend a trip to the The County Cider Company - have a cider and admire the best view in the area!

Appearances can be deceiving. This is a nicely appointed and stately old home-type inn but pretty much all aspects of my experience there didn't love up to the visuals. The massage in the spa was disappointing and the service at breakfast horrendous.

We purchased gift cards for a January 1 2013 wedding in November 2012. The couple called the wedding off in mid-December 2012 (we had not given the gift to them yet) and when I called the Claramount to try to get our $400 refunded, they told me they did not provide refunds on gift cards (funny, you can cancel a reservation when they are holding a room, but can't get a refund when no reservation has been made). I have phoned and left messages and emailed the owner of the Claramount and have not had the courtesy of a reply. Very unfortunate.

I spent one day and evening at Picton's grand Claramount Inn. I enjoyed a spa treatment (Erin), in-room yoga session (Julie) and two meals. I also was glad to be able to swim in December in the heated, covered pool, though the dry sauna there didn't get too hot. All staff were pleasant and professional, even those I merely made eye contact with in passing. The spa was small, unassuming and not intimidating to this spa tyro, but it had a few rooms for various treatments. My room had a large window that looked over a wooded area, so it was quite relaxing.

The suite was quite large, easily accommodating yoga practitioners with a quick move of a few pieces of furniture. The bathroom was huge and well-appointed. The furnishings and accoutrements suited the old building.

Both meals were expertly prepared, if a bit pricey. I have eaten a couple of times there and found the quality varies. The breakfast of French toast was especially large and delicious. Vegetarians are easily accommodated and the chef prepared a vegetarian dinner that was not on the menu. The dining room service was impeccable but not stuffy. (Thanks Candace and Randy!) I would certainly return if I wanted a luxurious place to stay in Picton.

Room Tip: Try to pick a room not right on the second floor at the top of the stairs, as noise from the lobby b...

"Disappointing" best sums up my recent experiences at the Claramount Inn and Spa. The place lacks the charm and coziness of a good B&B or the conveniences of a modern hotel while commanding a higher price than other similar properties in the area. It seems caught in a time-warp with old (read uncomfortable) furnishings and infrastructure without being able to make guests feel the benefits of that more gentle way of life. Often noisy, with no usable common area or lounge, the inn has a number of shortfalls that, when added together, make for a less than positive experience: a TV smaller than my computer monitor at home, cold tile floors in the bathroom negating the benefits of a large soaker tub, dresser drawers that stick and are hard to open/close, a noisy heater/AC system right by the bed and a salt-water pool accessible only by going out the main door and doing a polar bear run to the building next door - maybe OK in the summer but a bit much in the dead of a Canadian winter.

Meals were average at best and downright poor at other times. An overpriced wine list (114% markup on the liquor store selling price of one local wine) did not help matters much.

On the positive side of the ledger, service was good, rooms clean, staff pleasant. The wife booked a manicure at the spa and reported that the service was very good and reasonably priced. However, this is after struggling to complete a three page medical health questionnaire which required a full medical history and consent to discuss details with the family doctor. Seems a ittle unreasonable for a manicure (i.e., fails the common-sense test)!

Finally, we both felt "gratuitied out" at the end of our stay. Although our hospitality packages included certain meals and services, there was always the "voluntary" gratuity opportunity offered by the staff at breakfast, at dinner, at the spa and on checkout (for service and housekeeping staff).

Would we ever go back to the Claramount... no, not with other properties available in the area that appear to offer a better hospitality experience.

Food was very good, service was very odd, (wait staff seemed confused and surprised that there were patrons!) seating was very crowded and cramped especially given the prices, and what could have been the killer view in Picton was obliterated by un-trimmed trees and bushes in front of the windows. We left confused!! And returned another time assuming it had been a bad day. only to have the same experience all over again!!

One less table in the dinning room could open things up for both patrons and wait staff , and based on our experiences, a full dinning room is a rareity. And cut back those trees and let people see Picton Bay and the harbour!! As for the wait staff - perhaps having the owners of the Merrill Inn and/or Portabellos come and consult and instruct would be an easy and locally available remedy to a wait staff situation that should NEVER occur in a place that commands these prices. A perplexing situation that would appear to be easily fixed!!

My husband and I spent the first night of our honeymoon here, while we were travelling through. The staff were courteous in the evening, during the day they were a little stiff.
We enjoyed a three course dinner that was delicious. The spa staff was incredibly nice,
Our room was huge (#4) which included a huge soak tub! Which was lucky for us since the pool heater was broken when we visited. The room was equipped with a towel heater, a gas fireplace, a verandah and a king size bed. Very cozy atmosphere and an incredibly comfy bed.
We went in the early winter (Nov), I would come back to be able to see what this place is like in the summer.
The hallways are equipped with little games/decks of cards and a ton of books. a lovely seating area to enjoy these things as well.

Room Tip: ask for a top room (#4) is in the middle and we could hear the people upstairs the whole night.
