“Pretty Good stuff”
Reviewed August 6, 2010

My girlfriend and I spent a quick night at the Waring house. I have to admit that reading the reviews here I thought the place wasn't going to be as nice, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that my room was spectacular and the inn was much larger than anticipated. The rooms were beautiful and comfy and the were more things to do on the grounds then I thought. The dining room was alright and the food was pretty good. My only complaint would be the walls are very thin. I feel sorry for the guy in the next room (if you know what I mean).

After reading some reviews of WHI on this site, it was with trepidation that we arrived at Waring House Inn for a long weekend mini vacation. We had reserved on high recommendations from friends. There was no need to worry.....far from it!!!!! From our friendly, efficient check-in, to our lovely and beautifully appointed room (#203 in Quaker Lodge), to delicious meals in both the pub and dining room, to the beautiful gardens perfect for an evening's stroll, to the inn's great location (set in the countryside between Picton, Bloomfield and Sandbanks, we experienced a 100% enjoyable stay. For anyone who enjoys good food and wine, the dining room's' Five Course Tasting Menu' provides an exquisite experience. Kudos to Chef Luis deSousa and his team for their brilliant use of local produce, meats and wines.
Prince Edward County is a hidden treasure in Ontario providing a plethora of activities for every age group.
We will return to both the County and the Inn!

We just stayed at the Waring House and we experienced very poor service and quality in the following ways:

1. We showed up to the restaurant with 4 adults and 2 kids at 6pm and we were told that we would be seated in about 20 minutes. We waited for 20 minutes and clearly it was going to be a while, so we asked if they could call our room when the table was ready. They agreed and we called back from our room an hour later, and they said it was still 20 minutes. So we called back 15 minutes later, and they said, "oh well we just gave away your table"! So after 90 minutes of waiting, we gave up and went to another restaurant down the road. Imagine having to manage 2 young children eating at 9pm!

2. We were woken this morning at 730 to hear gossip through the walls from either the rooms next door or the SPA. We could clearly hear it and it last a couple hours.

3. We got "free breakfast" and showed up around 955am. We were then told, "Oh well we're almost done breakfast". We had never been told that 10am was the cutoff. The waitress rudely informed us that she would see if "the gas was still on".

4. We were seated at a table that was right next to a patio entrance. Guests were then apparently informed that this was now the restaurant exit and so for the next 15 minutes, we had people trying to squeeze past the back of our table to the point where I was shoved, told to move my chair, etc. while waiting for breakfast.

The cost for this hotel is expensive and I don't mind paying for it if the service is good - but clearly this is just a tourist trap.

We stayed in the old part of the Waring House which was constantly damp and humid, no matter whether we had the air conditioning on or off. The walls are paper thin; so, you can hear intoxicated neighbours well into the wee hours of the morning. Definitely bring ear plugs. To top it all off, we purchased a package which was supposed to include a wine tour. Despite an e-mail sent the week before (to which we received no reply) and a phone call to find out more details upon our arrival, the manager forgot to book our tour. Since our return, we've placed phone calls and sent e-mails since they promised to make amends, and once again, no replies. The restaurant staff and housekeeping staff are quite friendly, the food is fairly good and the scenery is beautiful. However, I don't think I'd make a second trip there.

We were two big-city-apartment dwellers looking for a relaxing escape. What we got instead was an earful from our neighbours in the new building. Trying to sleep but instead lying awake listening to another couple's conversation (at a regular volume level) is not my idea of a relaxing, luxury get-away. On the positive side, the beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. The food was ok, but not what you would expect at a property boasting a cookery school. We found the breakfast scheme of charging you to "upgrade" from the traditional breakfast to anything else on the menu, including pancakes, very tacky (what is $2 when you're paying over $200 a night???). The staff were flustered with the volume of guests, and not always pleasant or attentive.

My husband and I were looking for a place to vacation over the Canada Day long weekend. We found The Waring House online. We wanted to stay on Saturday night only, however; when we called The Waring House to book our night away, they said we HAD to book the Friday night as well, as there is a two night minimum. We agreed to go a night early as we really needed a vacation.

As my husband had to work all day on Friday, we drove through rush hour traffic and spent three hours on the road to get to the hotel. We checked in and got the key to our room, but decided to have dinner at The Barley Room before we went to our room. The service was incredibly slow and the food tasted cold and flavorless.

We were tired so we unpacked the car and brought all of our things to our room - but to our surprise the key wasn't working. My husband went back to the front desk and got another key. This time the key worked - we opened the door - and to our surprise - there were clothes all over, suitcases open, a laptop on the bed....There was someone in our room!!! We brought all of our stuff back downstairs and went straight to reception.

The girl behind the desk told us blankly that they had overbooked. I could not believe it. She said that they were completely full and we would have to leave. She said we could go to a motel 30 mins. away. It was 11:00pm and we had never been to this area before. We had no idea where we were going. She explained that they would pay for the room and that her manager would be able to make things up to us in the morning. We reluctantly drove out of town and found the nasty motel. I couldn't believe that they had insisted we stay two nights, only to be turned away and sent to a motel as they had no room for us.

The next morning when we tried to leave there was a $180 bill to be paid. The motel said that The Waring House would not pay this now. My husband got back on the phone and discussed the matter with the manager. She said it was up to the owner as she did not have the authority to do anything. She told him she would call him back - but there was no call. We drove to The Waring House to speak to her in person. Her only excuse was to blame her staff member who made the booking and tell us that she is very young.

They would not make things better by giving us a place to stay for the night. The owner was extremely rude to us. We felt as though they did not care at all about the nightmare they put us through. We ended the conversation by telling them we would be posting our experience on Trip Advisor, to which the owner retorted "Don't threaten me!". Well, it was not a threat. Here is our review.

I would advise anyone looking to stay in Picton to avoid the ordeal we were put through and do not book with The Waring House!

Looking forward to spending time in the country? Then don't stay here. They will most likely screw up your reserervation and ruin your weekend. After having a terrible meal at the barley pub where the food was cold and the beer warm, we look forward to retiring to our room. Which mind you is decorated in the theme of a grandmothers underwear collection. We are shocked to find that the room is already occupied. Front desk tells us that we are the second couple that this has happened to tonight. Which is kind of convenient for us as she already knows that everything else in town is booked except for a crappy motel 20 minutes away, which they send us to.
We return in the morning to try and sort out our misadventure, a little upset but not past the point of reason, only to be told by the owner that "it's probably time for you to go back to Toronto". Mistakes happen, it's how you treat your clients after such events that defines the business you run. I only hope that this write up prevents someone out there from making the same mistake we did. . . don't book with The Waring House.
