“Another wonderful stay at the Waring House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2012

This was our third trip to the Waring House, we stayed in The House Next Door again this time and just loved it. The rooms are so cozy and warm as are the staff. We quickly meet our neighbours and shared a few laughs and then headed over to the Barely Room Pub for a wonderful dinner with our new friends. We also love the entertaiment Carol Dixon, what a great performer. The complimentry breakfast the next morning was fantastic and as we left our only regret was that we did not book two nights, next time for sure!!

Room Tip: If you want that cozy and warm feeling in a room book the House Next Door, otherwise the Hotel in th...

I stayed in the new buildings and overall the room was decent . Big flaw was the noise . It seems the walls are made of paper. I could literally hear EVERYTHING in next room and they werent screaming. It was just talking but it kept me up till 2 am . If you are looking for peaceful sleep dont stay in new buildings .

We had a really nice stay with a couple of small exceptions. The service in Amelia's Garden Restaurant was excellent, especially on Friday night when it was less busy. Food was good too. We were a bit disappointed that the menu didn't change from Fri to Sat, but there were enough choices to not duplicate anything.

The room was great with an excellent bathroom. Unfortunately, there was not enough hot water to fill the 2 person bath tub and my shower the next day was warm, not hot. Also, we could clearly hear people in the next room, which is a shame since it is clearly a new building and sound proofing should have been done during construction. We figured out how to put the fan on to drown out neighbour noise the second night so were able to get some sleep.

The tasting at the nearby brewery was a lot of fun as was walking on the beach @ Sandbanks provincial park.

Room Tip: An end room might be quieter. Second floor rooms have a balcony.

There was no record of our reservation when we arrived. The clerk was very pleasant and gave us an upgraded room in one of the new buildings. The room was huge, too big really to feel cozy and looked out onto a parking lot. If you are looking for a relaxing view, there aren't many to be had at Waring House. Across the way is a nice view of the Home Hardware Building Centre. The room was well appointed however and we were okay with that until we discovered that we were out of range for the wireless internet. After a few phone calls and a trip to get an ethernet cable which did not connect us, we asked for a new room. We got a room that was about 1/4 the size of the mega-suburban-style room which was stuffed with fairly non-functional furniture. My husband woke up with a backache due to the poor mattress. The bathroom was nice in a cozy way and had a very good tub and lots of hot water. We woke to the sound of television coming at us from two different rooms.

The pub was cozy and the service very good. We enjoyed the signature apple cider and cheddar soup and the dinner buns were excellent. There was however a dank and musty smell coming from the far corner of the room.

The dinner was reasonably good with dessert being very good and the coffee very good as well. The service, well the service was quite variable . . . somewhat pretentious and a bit of snootiness when we asked if we could switch to a table on the other side of the planter we were told that the room was fully booked and that we could not. The three tables we could have potentially moved to were filled at a leisurely pace with the final prospect filled shortly before we left. Right after we were told that we could not change tables one of the over-busy waitresses, whizzed by our table, dropped knife which spattered butter and sauce on my husband's sweater before hitting the ground. She didn't notice.

We decided to stay here because a friend had recommended the place. I'm not sure how long ago it was that he stayed here. It happened that the countrylicious special was on and at $208 for two people with dinner and breakfast we didn't feel ripped off. We just found that we were eager to return to Toronto from our little getaway. I don't think it is supposed to work like that. I feel sorry for those who are paying full price for what we got.

Waring House advertises itself as a business centre but it has a long, long way to go if they want to please the business traveler. We will not be returning. When we checked out my husband said there was a long line-up of guests with one complaint or another. Having read some of the other reviews about double credit card charges my husband made sure to mention that our initial reservation had been lost so that we didn't get charged twice. Even thought we were part of the countrylicious package, he had to ask them to remove the dinner charge from our final bill.

Moral of the story - Check trip advisor before you book.

Dear Guest:
I read your review with sadness but wish to thank you for giving us some excellent suggestions for improvement. We really do take customer comments to heart.
I will be following up on the missed reservation. You should have been given a confirmation number and received an emailed confirmation for your room. I will check why that did not happen in your case.
I am sorry you did not like The Lodge room. It is one of my favourite in the old part of the inn. It’s “non-functional furniture” is actually, I think, quite lovely. It is a collection from the historic Jacques & Hay furniture company of Toronto. Our beds usually receive excellent compliments with pillow tops and feather beds in the lodge rooms and feather beds in all other rooms. I will, however, check the mattress in room 8 and replace it if needed. I am not aware of other complaints but I will be making enquiries of my housekeeping staff.
Wireless internet in our geographical location is an incredibly frustrating experience. We have gone to huge expense to assure dependable service and audit our system to ensure good service. We usually do have wireless internet and at the least, ethernet. I will check the cable connection in your original room.
I’m glad you enjoyed the pub. We have been receiving excellent Countylicious dinner menu reviews. I’m sorry the server could not accommodate your request to move to a different table. It was very busy and it is my understanding that all other tables were reserved.
I also apologize on the part of the server for dropping the knife which dirtied your husband’s sweater and her not noticing.
I have looked into the issues you mention at check out. This time of year, we have only one person on the desk. We will shortly be adding another person to improve service as the busy season begins. Complaints recorded that morning were your own and two others – both housekeeping issues of a minor nature.
As to your dinner charge showing up on your room charge– our auditor just last night had called my attention to a glitch in our POS system that could have led this to happen. This has been corrected and we are very happy you (and our night auditor) pointed it out to us.
Your friend recommended The Waring House to you and that makes us very happy. A great many of reservations are by referral. We have a lot of very happy business travellers repeatedly staying at The Waring House.

We had a most exceptional long weekend at the Waring House. Stayed in The House Next Door with a giant jet tub and fireplace in our room. Ate at the Barley Room Pub both evenings, and particularly enjoyed the band The Sidekicks. Food was great. X-Country skied on the Millennium Trail, and at Sandbanks. The entire weekend was fabulous; we were thoroughly spoiled at a very reasonable price (off-season rates).

My wife and I stayed in the Quaker building, and had a great weekend, getting away from our two little ones.

Overall experience of Waring house was " very good" BUT , very oddly, the rooms are not well designed from a noise standpoint, as we could hear our neighbors in the next room as "plain as day". They were not partying or being loud. They were merely having a regular conversation, which through the wall, one could not exactly asertain the actual words, but pretty darn close. I even think that the next room's bed was just on the other side of our wall, and so I could have just turned around and had a bice conversation with them . So, not so fun when the neighbors are up at 6:45 AM, and you're looking to have some quite get away time and some R&R.

Besides that, the rooms were not perfectly clean, but good enough and teh rooms are bvery nice, comfortable bed,and big tub !

The best part is the pub, which had entertainment both Friday and Saturday night - very good !

If we go back, we'll ask for a quiter room :)

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room. No nieghbor noise !
