Second visit and it was a wonderful weekend. 3 of us (including 1 teen) stayed in the one bedroom suite on the 3rd floor. Perfect for us. 2 bathrooms, separate living room. We find the Merrill quiet and comfortable and an oasis base for a weekend in the PEC area. Went to Black River Cheese (for fresh cheese curds), Lake on the Mountain (nice lunch in the stone Inn at the top), Sandbanks (hiking dunes & sand beach & flat rocks - excellent spot for picnic lunch), saw a bird banding at the Point, a bit of shopping in the little town of Picton, vineyard wine tastings (we did : Closson Chase, Karlo Estates (our fav tasting - they do pairings), Rosehall Run, Sandbanks, Black Prince). Breakfast was included in our package and it was as delicious as it looked. Also a very nice dinner at Merrill one night, then at recommended Blumen Garden the next. Common areas in the Merrill are beautiful.

Room Tip: We experienced NO noise probelms on the 3rd floor. Note - no elevetor if that matters. It was fine for us.

We were impressed with the beautiful grounds and graceful decor of this heritage house in central Picton. However, it was quite expensive, which raised our expectations. Our ground-floor room was unusually large, but there was nowhere to place our luggage and the inevitable decorative cushions except the floor. Our friend's room at the back of the inn was rather noisy in the evening. The restaurant, tucked below and behind the inn, had excellent food and charming staff, but the co-owner had a touch of Basil Fawlty about his manner. Maybe he was just having a bad day.

Room Tip: Room at the back next to the restaurant is a little noisy when they are closing for the evening.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us. Room 101 which is referred to is an oversized Premium room on the main floor with a very large antique armoire for plenty of storage (for decorative pillows) and a luggage rack located in front of it for suitcases.

The co-owner/Innkeeper of the Inn who has over 40 years of hospitality experience is passionate about pleasing his guests and welcoming travellers into his historic home.

Perhaps Basil Fawlty could take a hospitality lesson from the owners of the Merrill Inn and we will consider a Fawlty Towers evening in the future.

We were given room 105 and told it was quiet. In fact this ground floor room is located immediately above the kitchen ventilation fan which makes a lot of noise. I asked if it could be shut off and was told it would be at 9:30pm. After more complaining it was stopped at around 10:30pm, only to be wake me up around 6:00am the following morning. Note also that air conditioners were installed in all the windows with no provision for letting fresh air into the room during a cool September night. The only option would have been to run the fan (AC was not needed) - more noise. If you visit during the summer it seems that cooling off by opening a window (if it could be done) would not be a good option as you would have to contend with AC noise from other windows, let alone the kitchen ventilator if your room was nearby.

On the positive side, the house is elegant and well kept, service is friendly and the breakfast good. However it was quite expensive, especially for a small room.

Room Tip: Avoid room 105 and be warned about noise.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments with us.We are delighted that you enjoyed the Inn overall and service and are sorry that you were not pleased with your guestroom.

As you are aware, the Inn is a historically designated property and we have done our utmost to maintain the physical integrity of the building. This includes window air conditioners, which of course does not allow for the window to open while they are installed during the summer season.
The fan that is part of the kitchen located below your guestroom, must by law be operational as long as the restaurant is open and is shut off by 11pm to ensure our guests have a good nights sleep.

The guestroom that you stayed in was completely renovated in January and has been one of our most requested rooms.

We stayed in the fireplace room which was very quaint and spacious. We eat out a lot and the dinner was second to none. Edward, the owner, talked with us a number of times and was helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Excellent location. Small concern, we could hear a water pump or some mechanical device cycling on and off during the night which was a minor irritation. The Victorian atmosphere definitely provided a romantic getaway.

The autumn mid-week special (dinner, breakfast, picnic lunch, coupons for wine tastings and local farm stand) brought us to the Merrill Inn during a first visit to Prince Edward County. We were not disappointed. This is a lovely spot for a quick romantic getaway--amazing dinner, lovely inn and owners and staff that paid attention to every detail. We'll be back!
