“Nice stay”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

We did not make reservations ahead while traveling the Alaska Highway and came upon the Big Horn in Watson Lake one evening when we were exhausted from a long drive. We were thankful to see the vacancy sign and we were given an upstairs room with two beds. There were no elevators but I think the hotel is only two floors and there are rooms on the first floor as well. The room is like something from the past but it was clean, comfortable, quiet, and warm! There was a stocked kitchenette with a stove, refrigerator, oven, microwave, and a little table. The kitchen sink doubled as the bathroom sink which was little strange but workable. It also might have the hottest water I have ever used which in these parts of minus temperature is a great advantage. My husband was happy to find the large flat screen TV waiting for him after the long drive. Although we did not have a pet with us, they do welcome pets at the hotel. The man behind us had five small dogs and was readily given a room. There is no food on sight but there is a little restaurant down the street that was open for breakfast when we left at 7:00 AM but we decided to wait and eat further down the road which was a very long wait.

The Big Horn is by no means a resort hotel, but it is a nice place to end a long day or to spend a few days exploring Watson Lake.

After a 16 hour day and an often harrowing drive up the Cassiar Hwy we were more than ready to just find a warm place to sleep. We were thankful to see a vacancy sign on this snowy night and that they had a room with two beds available. The desk staff did look at me like I might be a escaped convict but still rented us a room. It was located down at the end of the building, a big room with old heavy furniture but I have to admit a nice TV and comfy beds. As previously mentioned the room had a weird 'lysoly' smell and my clothes smelled of smoke the next day though it was a non smoking room. The in room fridge made loud noises all night but honestly we were almost too tired to notice. The most expensive place we stayed our whole drive from Seattle even counting the B&B in Anchorage at $107 a night, but adequate and it fit our needs at that time.

This hotel is a welcome sight after a long drive on the Alcan. We had our pet dog with us and were not able to find any hotels that would take him in. When we checked in at the Big Horn they were happy to have him stay in the hotel.
The hotel is a wee bit on the old side but very well maintained. The rooms are large and super clean with a very comfortable bed and lots of room to spread out your things.
The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful which always makes a hotel stay enjoyable. I would highly recommend the Big Horn. In my opinion you won’t find a better place on the Alcan.

In June 2012 I and two other riders stayed at the Big Horn. We was so glad that we had reservations because they filled and people were turned away with few choices in town. The staff was very friendly, the room was clean and just right for three guys tired from a day astride our motorcycles. The food in town was mediocre but we weren't complaining and the coffee was pretty weak and unavailable early in the morning anywhere in town. We ate out of town at the Wolf It Down and had a great breakfast. Then on to Whitehorse.

The 1rst floor stinks of septic or dead bodies , or something! They had no other rooms but the "jacuzzi " room. A regular room that has a redneck jacuzzi installed in it . So I had to pay $130 bucks for a value that should have gone for $60.

Excellent place to stay along the Alaskan highway! Friendly staff and traditional room set up with television, coffee. Next door is an awesome place to eat. You could also stay there, as they have rooms, but can't speak on it, because I don't know from experience. Food was so/so, but when you've been traveling on this road, you don't care; good enough! The hotel even has cool hats and t-shirts in the lobby. Certainly an essential area for travels.

Pet fee $10 PER PET. So much wanted to like this place as the 2 staff people (Isabel & Darlene) we spoke to were extra nice & helpful. I can overlook old, heavy furniture, even peeling wallpaper, because the room was clean and bonus is window opened, but I'm there to sleep & we didn't get much of that! Must be structural or utility issues with this old place. Built like two long work camp trailers placed end to end with very loud autoclosing doors in between. Room 108 is beside the doors. Few people coming & going overnight so that was ok but at 3am a HUGE bang jolted us awake (meant I had a headache for the rest of the day). Sounded like 100kg of snow/ice falling on metal, except there wasn't much snow & it happend a couple hours later. Think it is either the plumbing or the heating pipes. Due to these structural issues with the hotel I would rather sleep in my vehicle if we couldn't complete the drive to somewhere else, even in November! 2 queen beds were also so soft my back ached so much that I could barely stand up in the morning. Dragon's Den is only other place in winter that allows pets & isn't reveiwed as filthy but it has a bar attached so we chose Big Horn instead. Never again.

Room Tip: avoid hotel. see reveiw re structural noises.
