“Whale Watching just the beginning...”
Reviewed March 22, 2013 via mobile

We headed off for a whale-watching tour with Subtidal this morning, and were fortunate to be greeted with a clear and sunny day. The inflatable Zodiac was full with a complement of 12 passengers, in addition to captain Bob and, because it's Whale Festival time here, Marine Biologist Wendy was on this trip - an added bonus. Excellent gear was provided to help keep you warm, dry and safe. I neglected to take gloves but Captain Bob had a number of pairs for borrowing.

We encountered sealions of both the California and Stellar variety, a host of eagles (it looked like a convention on a rock at one point), Gray whales, seals and a lone otter. Bob took us over quite a large territory and the information provided by Wendy was great to have. Tour was supposd to be 2 hours but ended up being 2-1/2 - another bonus.

Would certainly recommend this outfit, their staff was knowledgeable, entertaining and helpful, the watercraft safe and clean, and the trip was marvellous.

A tip - don't spend too much time looking through a camera viewfinder when the boat is in rougher seas, it'll turn you green faster than a bad piece of meat.

“A Must see even for Islanders”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

My husband and I just got back from 2 days on the west coast. Even though we live on the Island we have never taken the time to go whale watching. We could have picked better weather but even so we were warm as toast in the survival gear given to us to wear but hands and feet a bit cold. We were amazed at how many grey whales we saw (that was my focus). We likely saw about 8 - 10 and stayed along side of each of them (at a safe distance) for a considerable amount of time before moving on to find others. Brian is a former warden with Pacific Rim and is an active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He has been taking people out for over 30 years. There was never any question about competency and his knowledge of the marine wildlife was very informative. Would highly recommend him and have done so already to others.

“WOW, Fabulous”
Reviewed March 5, 2013

What a lovely adventure.Well, Mom needed to see a whale. Imagine being 94 yrs and never seeing a whale. One grey whale off of Forbes Island. Yeah!!!! SubTidal Adventure. Thank you for a great tour. The best trip ever. Over 20 Eagles sitting on rocks with the sea crashing and rolling. Beautiful sunny day and the captain Brian is a very nice man. Very informative about the area as he has been in this area for over 20 years. Broken island groups has more than 100 islands and rocks. The scenery is spectacular and absolutely incredable. I can't wait to come back. We had the best 4 hour boat ride adventure. Thank you so much.

“Amazing experience and amazing guide”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

My girlfriend and I went on the Whales, bears, birds and islands tour in autumn 2012 and absolutely loved it. It was without doubt one of the highlights of our 14 day trip to the whole of the Canadian rockies. We got to see all sorts of wildlife (black bears, humpback whales, bald eagles, seals etc) and had a memorable day. The tour guide / boat captain Brian was really friendly and really knowledgeable giving us lots of good information and answering any questions. He went out of his way to make sure we had the best chance of seeing everything we wanted and what we also loved was his passion for the animals, joining us all on deck to take pictures of them despite the fact he must see them daily. Highly highly recommended if you find yourself in Ucluelet.

“WHALE WATCHING WITH SUBTIDAL”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

Possibly the highlight of our 25 day trip to Canada. Brian at Subtidal took us out to do some whale spotting but by special request also Bears as we missed them all the time on the main land. Shortly after leaving Ucluelet Brian pointed out a Bear on the shore line and then we spotted some Whales and a bald eagle and then later on we were over the moon as we encountered a Whale and its baby. It was a beautiful experience in wonderful weather. The ice cream back at the shop in town was pretty awesome also. Will we return ? You bet.
