Hi John,

I'm sorry that your stay at our campground was anything but great and I'm also sorry that it's taken me this long to respond! In 2012, that was our first year owning and opperating Surf Junction. There was a lot of mistakes that we made, and have since corrected. It was a summer of learning, especially in May, that was our first time ever with our staff. These aren't excuses, but an acknowledgement of our disapointment to some of our campers. I completely understand your frustration with us and I hope that you are willing to come back, for free of course, and see that we have made huge steps in the right direction.

Again, we are sincerely sorry!

My girlfriend and I spent about 6 nights in total at this place. The staff member (native girl) who was working the evening we checked in was really awful. She seemed completely clueless on any occasion we dealt with her. When checking in she couldn't find our booking despite asking us our names (and how to spell it) about 3 or 4 times. When we wrote our name down on some paper she finally found our booking! Moments after this another staff member (blonde girl) walked out and in front of other guests rudely stated we were a day late checking in when we were actually arriving on the correct day! That was totally unacceptable but she didn't seem to care one bit. One thing we could not fathom (or for that matter many other guests) is their absolute persistence in moving people constantly around the campsite. For example we were there for 6 nights but they insisted that we spend 2 nights at one camp spot, another night at another camp spot and so on. This often meant we had to hang around on the morning of the day we needed to move because check out was 11am. This effectively meant you couldn't leave the campsite to do anything until after 11. Total madness but they insisted on doing this to us and many other people which seemed totally bizarre and pointless. To be fair there was 1 member of staff (guy with greying hair) who seemed to actually be on the ball and know what he was doing (as well as being very polite & friendly) but the female staff members were awful (unfriendly, unhelpful and moody). They were obviously surfers who were working at the campsite to make ends meet but it wouldn't kill them to be friendlier. Apart from the mostly useless staff the other negative point was some of the other guests. Despite being a campsite primarily for surfers there were a lot of people there who were just regular tourists or kids down from Victoria or Vancouver to party away from their parents. We got stuck next to one group of 18 year olds who made noise and talked loudly well past the quiet time marker (11pm). Despite many requests to quiet down they didn't and just continued partying. In Parks Canada run campsites there are usually staff on site 24/7 or at least a number that you can call to report noise makers but on this campsite there was no such number and the site officer was closed from about 10pm until 8am the next morning. On the plus side this camp site was actually quite nice with good toilet and shower facilities that were usually quite clean. They offered good deals on hiring surf boards/wet suits and other equipment. Also the location is excellent for those who visit the area for surfing (the beaches are really close). Just be aware that you really need a car in this area. My girlfriend and I arrived in Ucluelet by bus and did not realize how far apart the town is from the campsite and other spots. We managed to hire a car (no help from the campsite) but a Parks Canada information place up the road were very helpful and sorted us out. We enjoyed our stay in the area and did like the campsite overall but if the staff had been more efficient and just that bit friendlier it would have made the visit all the better. If we go back I think we would try and stay somewhere else.

Thank you for your comments and helpful feedback. It's nice to hear that you had an enjoyable experience overall and that you were pleased with our campground location and facilities, and our affordable rates for surf rentals. We strive to employ staff that are friendly, helpful, and passionate about customer service. We apologize for the way you were treated by our old staff members. Neither of them work here any longer. We do in fact have night staff on shift until 2:30am who enforce our quiet time policy (no loud voices or music between 11pm-8am). There is a doorbell at the front office which will wake the on-site staff member who is on call throughout the night in case of excessive noise/disturbances or in case of emergency.
At some campgrounds, you are assigned a site at check-in, however, each of our sites are unique, therefore we assign sites to customers when they make a reservation to ensure that they are getting the right site for them. We never move around reserved sites without the permission of the reservee. Changing sites during the entirety of your stay aka "the campground shuffle" is something we try to avoid at our campground. We agree that it is inconvenient and a hassle for campers. Campers who end up doing the "campground shuffle" do so by choice normally because they arrive without a reservation or call too late to make areservation in one site. Due to the high number of summer reservations, it is rare for the same site to be vacant for more than 1 or 2 nights, therefore changing sites is the only option for these campers. This is why we strongly recommend making a reservation for camping during the high season. Thanks again for your comments.
