Ocean Mist Guesthouse
Ranked #4 of 30 Ucluelet B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 18, 2012

This B & B is in a 5- or 6-year-old, 3-level, well-built craftsman style house, designed and built for accommodating both the owners and two guestrooms for renting. You will notice the meticulous care in every detail in the guest room as you enter it through a private entrance. We stayed in Uncle John’s for three nights in mid-September, 2012. We were so impressed with the beautiful and spotlessly clean guest room, thoughtfully designed and decorated with tasteful details. While we were, during our search, initially drawn by the appearance of the house, which somewhat resembles our own house, it was no doubt Rod and Kelly that made our stay feel like home. Without exaggeration and reservation, this is the best and cleanest B & B we have ever experienced (although we are more familiar with B & Bs on the south side of the border).
What else do you expect (from, say, a 5-star hotel)? Clean and well appointed bathroom? Privacy? Convenient, clean and fully functional kitchen? Sensible furniture? Quality towels, sheets and pillows? Location? View? Hospitable and genuine hosts? You get them all! Ocean Mist Guesthouse has earned our highest recommendation for anyone that travels to that wild part of the Island!
By the way, Ucluelet is far better than the better known, more commercialized, and more heavily promoted (in the US, as far as we know) Tofino on the other end of the Long Beach. If you look for quiet and pristine wilderness and genuine hospitality, then choose Ucluelet and stay in OMG!

We were here for 4 nights at the beginning of June 2012 and stayed in the twin room (Blue Heron room) which was very pleasant and exits to the garden at the back of the house with chairs on the veranda.
We found that deer tend to come and graze in the garden right in front of our window, and robins were also constant visitors, which added an extra bit of enjoyment to our stay.
The room was nice but had only one small drawback - a lack of cupboard space to store our clothes. As we stayed 5 days we would have liked to have somewhere we could have hung everything or put on shelves. However, we overcame this and managed with the couple of drawers we founds.
Rod and Kelly were great hosts. On one of the days when the Wifi connection wasn't working, Rod immediately invited me into their house to use their computer.
Breakfast was very good, with a different menu every day.
The house is walking distance to the Wild Pacific Trail and we usually went out for a morning walk there before breakfast, often seeing local wildlife on the way, including Bald Eagles.
All in all, a recommended B&B, and one of the few we found that offered twin rooms.

My daughter and I stayed here for a couple of nights while visiting BC. We were very pleasantly surprised by the beauty and tranquility of the Ocean Mist B&B and surrounding village of Ucluelet. The room was very spacious and immaculate. The breakfasts served by Rod were absolutely amazing. Anyone looking for a peaceful retreat do not hesitate to go, we certainly will be returning ourselves.

Actually, we stayed here in Sept. 2009 but did not have that option in the drop down menu. Had intended to review the Ocean Mist last fall but was doing a lot of traveling and forgot. Normally we're not great fans of B&Bs but this one was almost enough to make us change our minds - and we'd certainly return in a heartbeat. Because I originally booked for 2 nights and decided to try for a 3rd night a couple of weeks before the trip, we stayed in both rooms since the Blue Heron wasn't available for the extra night. Each room has a lot to recommend it and you can't go wrong in either. The Blue Heron has a ground-level deck and view of the distant ocean and the occasional deer passing through, munching on the roses. Uncle John's has a second story deck with not so good a view (the road, woods) but a king-sized bed (queen in the Blue Heron). Both include a lovely breakfast delivered about 8:30 AM. Both are beautifully decorated and scrupulously clean. The Ocean Mist is a short walk to the Wild Pacific Trail.

Often we've noted that "charming", "quaint", "historic", and a variety of other words used to describe B&Bs are actually euphemisms for "small", "cramped", "inconvenient" or "shopworn". The Ocean Mist house is new and was designed as a B&B, with large rooms, nice bathrooms, a private entrance. No toilets crammed into tiny alcoves, lack of space for luggage, or other drawbacks we've always found in historic buildings and homes, converted schools or railway stations. Kelly and Rod are helpful and gracious hosts. If all B&Bs were like this one, I'd never stay in a hotel or motel again.

For some reason, their guests seem to be largely European and the glowing reviews of the Ocean Mist are on European sites. Their lack of visibility in the US could also be because, at least when I was researching the area, Tofino seems more highly recommended than Ucluelet. Having spent an afternoon in Tofino, we're not really sure why. We found several good restaurants in Ucluelet, better than the restaurant we picked for lunch in Tofino, and it's not like either place is a hotspot for nightlife or shopping. Ucluelet is also more convenient for the Archipelago Wildlife Cruises, which we highly recommend.

We stayed here for 3 nights and had a lovely time. The room we had was the Blue Herron Room which was large, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. It even has a little kitchen area with a microwave, coffee machine etc.The bathroom was excellent with a nice shower and again, spotless. The room also has a little deck with chairs and a view of the ocean..and the occasional deer in the back yard! You have your own entrance so you are self containedBreakfasts were lovely and served to the room each morning. They were all freshly made with organic ingredients and delicious. Rod and Kelly are the hosts and they were just lovely. Kelly took lots of time to talk over local attractions when we arrived and she was just sweetness itself our whole stay. Rod is also a really genuine. helpful decent guy. I had agonised about whether to stay in Tofino or Ucluelet and, having been there, I think I made the right choice. It's a little quieter (although having been to both, there's not much difference) but it is closer to most of the trails, views etc.
I would definitely recommend this B&B to anyone.
