“WHAT A FABULOUS PLACE TO STAY”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

We stayed in this hotel in May 2012 for 2 nights. We traveled from Vancouver to Calgary and this was our second stop in Vancouver Island. We stayed in the basic room which was lovely with great views and a very comfortable bed and absolutely fabulous bathroom. We ate in the hotel one night the food was good but a bit pricey so bear that in mind when considering your budget. I would recommend trying a Dark and Stormy cocktail really good and the bar was a lovely place to spend a few hours in the evening. This was certainly somewhere I will remember.

I would have awarded 5 stars except for 2 things. I found the breakfast restaurant staff a little unhelpful(no-one to seat myself or the other people waiting),difficulty in explaining why no juices were included in the breakfast buffet(I have never encountered that before). However,I had a great room, a onebedroom suite in the lodge and everything was excellent except the windows were very dirty.Possibly this is due to the saltspray but it really detracted from the overall appearance of the room. The girls who checked me in were delightful and did arrange for me to get into my room around 2pm as I wanted to go hiking and had refridgerated items with me.You can hike the Wild PacificTrail right from the staff Parking Lot or drive to the 2.5km Lighthouse Trail where whales are regularly spotted. They have a plungepool and hot tub usually available.

We stayed 3 nights in September. We had booked 2 rooms on the ocean view 3rd floor. We had friends with us as they had never been to the west coast of the island. The rooms were great, very contemporary and well done. The rooms were clean, everything worked and the view was outstanding. The food and service in the restaurant was very very good even with it being quite busy. The front desk staff and all the staff are very helpful and friendly. Often you read reviews that are very negative however no matter what the resort or hotel someone will always find fault. If you want a beautiful hotel stay here, go for the premium rooms on the ocean and you will not be disappointed

Room Tip: The premuim ocean view room above the outdoor patio, quiet, amazing view

Great westcoast location. Staff were friendly but somewhat inexperienced. Food was good but not awe inspiring. Views were amazing, with whales in the distance.

Bottom line if I had paid half the price I would say this place is fantastic, but for the price it needs to be more special

We stayed for one night and would have loved to have stayed longer. Our one bedroom suite had floor to ceiling windows and overlooked the ocean. We had a balcony and a LOVELY view. The suite was very nicely decorated, the bed was comfortable, and we loved hearing the ocean. The bathroom had a heated floor, and a lovely shower and bath.

We had a dinner and lunch at the hotel restaurant (Fetch) which were both delicious. Highly recommend the restaurant. Not only is the food delicious, it is beautifully presented. Our server was very friendly. After dinner we sat out on the patio and enjoyed a drink while watching the sun set.

We'd go back in a heartbeat. Wonderful trails and beaches nearby, quieter than Tofino, lots to enjoy.

Room Tip: Make sure you get an ocean view room!

We paid top dollar expecting to get amazing ocean views, and that's exactly what we got. In fact, we were blown away by our 2nd story balcony which must have been, oh maybe 50 feet long. It was incredible. I said to my wife that we could have hosted a party with 30 people on the balcony, and everyone would have had ample space.

I give Black Rock an excellent rating, but there were things that could have been better. First, the design and décor throughout the hotel is quite unique. Modern. Austere. Zen-like. But also sometimes cold. Hard. Not particularly inviting. It is, after all Black Rock - not white rock or Happy Rock. I realize I am not getting this point across particularly well, but there was something about the place that was a bit aloof. It was not a warm and inviting space. But it was minimalist and intriguing.

The dining room is nice but over-priced for the food and speed of service. We had two breakfasts and one supper. All were expensive and slow, but decent. Once again, the star of the show was the view, which was wonderful especially as the sun was setting and fires were lit for our dinner.

Our two bedroom suite (in the main building) was gorgeous and somehow austere at the same time. Big. Huge windows that we opened to hear the sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks outside. Three doors opened to the huge balcony.

We got the feeling that the hotel was understaffed. We rarely saw anyone who was working, except for the small front desk area. In the dining room and the kitchen it seemed like more people were needed. The place was distinctly quiet.

The bathrooms and showers were amazing. I loved the personal care items.

Each of our bedrooms had a fireplace. One did not work - or at least I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. I called but no-one ever came to fix it. It wasn't a big deal - just an observation.

The location of the hotel is perfect, and we were able to walk right outside of the dining area and be on the amazing paths that hugged the water and the rocks. Our family loved exploring the tidal pools.

Room Tip: The suite we stayed in was not available in online inventory, but was available by phone.
