“a bit mislead”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

This was a good trip - BUT it was annoying to be told that the sea otter that featured heavily in the advertising had not been seen for 3 YEARS - He was firmly of the opinion that commercial fishermen are not responsible for environmental problems - and did he ever go on about it! Can you guess what they used to do for a living?

We were welcomed on board, and made to feel very welcome. We did see some lovely scenery and a fair bit of wild life.

Definitely not the best trip we did on the holiday. Still good but not the best.

And the way he went on and on about putting a good review on trip advisor, far too much high pressure for my liking.

We appreciate all reviews on trip advisor. We will address each of your comments as we feel they are important.

Our web site states that the odd sea otter can be seen but not daily. Our brochure shows one photo and lists sea otters along with the other mammals we hope to encounter. Ollie, who turned into lunch for an Orca, is not mentioned until I tell the story of his life and death during our tour along with a “lesson” on the role of sea otters in the ecology of the area. If you felt misinformed about sea otters we are sorry. The time to ask anything is before you book the trip. We even encourage this on our website and many people do ask. We tell them the truth and so does our advertising.

Since Ucluelet is the third largest fishing port in BC, our local fisheries are of interest to most tourists. Our shrimp industry shut down because of low price. The local salmon trollers lost 80 % of their catch in a treaty with the Americans. The draggers and longliners take observers or cameras to record their catch. Nothing is thrown back. The biologists set the quotas and a fisherman catches only what he is allowed. The black cod were getting smaller. The Department of Fisheries took that as an indication the quota was too high and as result they cut it in half. That is my lesson on fishing. If I was aware of environmental problems with the local fisheries I would certainly mention them.

As a member of the Trip Advisor community we are encouraged by Trip Advisor to ask our guests for a review. We do not ask for a good review, we tell our guests as a group, that we would appreciate a review if they are computer savvy and if they feel like doing one. Reviews indicate whether or not we are providing the right experience and service to our guests. In addition, the reviews supply invaluable information to future guests of the tour they can expect while with us. We are sorry you felt pressured by our approach.

We did see “a fair bit of wildlife”. On the day in question, October 6th, we saw 6 humpback whales, 3 grey whales, a colony of stellar sea lions, California sea lions, harbour seals, harbour porpoises, bald eagles, and 14 types of sea birds that we pointed out and identified. The day weather was warm, sunny and the sea calm. An Australian couple with their 7 year old daughter were aboard the same day as you. They enjoyed it so much they joined us again two days later. We provided them with much the same tour except on Oct. 8th we also saw a bear with cub and the humpbacks were breaching, lob tailing, rolling, and lunge feeding. You never know in advance what you’re going to see.

We are sorry that our top rated wildlife tour did not meet your needs but are pleased that you were able to have an experience on your holiday that was more to your liking.

“Whales & More”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

This trip exceeded my expectations. Toddy and Al immediately made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. They went above and beyond to find whales for us, even though everyone else told us they had left the area days ago. They were informative and knew their stuff from years of commercial fishing. If you go, invest in the lunch. Very good quality. I would do this again in a minute. It was the high point of our vacation.

“Simply Amazing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

Toddy and Al were the perfect host and hostess for our recent wildlife cruise. We were there on 10/6/2012 - we saw 15 yes 15) whales - they were jumping, breaching, spy hopping, laying beside the boat, you name it, there were in a good and happy mood that day. We also saw more Eagles than we could count, California sea lions, star fish, various other birds and 2 bears. We have been on several other wildlife cruises, but this was by FAR the best ever. We have departed from Friday Harbour numerous times and spotted Orcas (also amazing); and from San Francisco bay and only saw spray and not much else due to the high swells.
The lunch on Archipelago was second to none, so delicious! Their knowledge of the wildlife and the area was amazing! We will definately go back and stay in the Black Rock Resort and go back out on the Archipelago next time, as well. There was also a family on the cruise, it was their 2nd time that week.
Thank you Toddy and Al Landry (Landry is also our grandson's name) for such a wonderful time! Until we meat again....

“Wildlife boat safari”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

We went on this luxury 5 hour boat trip to watch whales, sea lions and seals etc. The owners of the boat were very entusiastic and we found our whales even though a bit out of season. A vry nice day. You can order gourmet lunch or you may bring your own sandwiches as we did!
