“Outstanding”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2012

I have stayed in many small motels, hotels and inns in 40 years of traveling in the north. The Raven Hotel is in the very top tier in my experience. Raven would be an excellent place to stay anywhere in North America; in Alaska and Yukon it is outstanding and far beyond the norm.

The very nice furnishings immediately caught our eye. As we became more accustomed to the room we saw many small details which spoke of attention to detail, and an eye for the beautiful.

We were pleased to find reasonably fast wifi available in this small and somewhat remote community. Our cell phones did not find service, but we were easily able to communicate with family and friends through wifi.

There is an attractive dining area in the upstairs area. The hosts served a complimentary breakfast which was nicely laid out with a variety of light foods.

When we travel through this area in the future, this will definitely be our choice.

The hotel was the best available and offers good clean rooms. The office was closed when we got there at about 2pm and we had to hang around till 4pm. Charging for the internet was silly, this should just be included. A real shame their restaurant is not open as there is not much choice in the town. Good breakfast and nice that this was included in the price.

Thank you very much for your comments as it is always great to hear from our clients. We apologize that our front desk opens at 3pm daily, but this allows us to have all of our rooms cleaned and ready for check-in. As for charging for the internet, we find this necessary as our internet overage charges in The Yukon are on average over $300 per month. Maybe once other internet providers are available in The Yukon and they can provide us with better service and pricing we will drop this $5 charge - which compared to a lot of places we have stayed when we travel, is very cheap. Thank you again for your comments and we hope you enjoyed your visit to Haines Junction and The Yukon. We hope to see you again in the future.

We stayed in two different places in Haines Junction - on the way up the highway and on the way down, and The Raven Hotel was definitely the best. Our room was quiet and comfortable, we would have appreciated a way to make a drink at night, but that was our only criticism. The breakfast was excellent. If you are travelling around do make time to go to the museum at Burwash Landing and if you fancy a days hike we can recommend the Sheep Creek trail.

This was our first trip to the Yukon and it was a total revalation. Scenery was spectacular, air was fresh, people were exceptionally welcoming and it never gets dark (in summer at least!). Haines Junction is a convenient place for Kluane exploration, as well as drives north and south. Don't miss the museum at Burwash Landing, it is excellent. And if you can, take a sightseeing flight into Kluane to see the glaciers.

Our stay at the Raven was very pleasant, room was spacious and clean, and as others have noted the continental breakfast (actually it's a European breakfast rather than the North American version of "continental") was a great start to the day. The Bakery down the street was a fun place to eat, we are sorry that we weren't there on a Friday to attend the music night and salmon BBQ.

I'll share the comment that others have made about the $5 Wifi charge, I'd suggest that the Raven's owners just fold this into the room charge as Wifi has become an expected service at all lodgings, not an add on luxury.

For those travelling to the Yukon for the first time, be aware that anything you think you will need to buy during the trip should be purchased in Whitehorse or wherever you ar setting out from. Haines Junction lost it's grocery and general store, and you are 2 hours away from the next one. As Canadian taxpayers we are fully in favour and are pleased with the visible support given to the Yukon by our federal government, but we are a little perplexed that with so much being spent on government buildings and community centres, there doesn't seem to be a way to provide citizens of Haines Junction and other parts of the Yukon with an essential service like a grocery store.

In summery, we were amazed with what the Yukon has on offer, and we are pleased to recomment a stay at the Raven.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back of the hotel have great mountain views.

Still probably the best hotel in Haines Junction, but they have lost their chef and closed their dining room for the season. And they will probably be losing one of their Canada Select stars next rating. Nice rooms, clean and big. Excellent continental breakfast with great baked goods. Friendly family runs the place. No coffee maker in room. All the soaps are dispensed as liquids. Rooms have vertical blinds, not so effective in shutting out the 4 am sunrise.

Thank you so much for your comments! It really is too bad that we have lost our Chef! He, as well as the dining room, are definitely missed! I don't believe that Canada Select is any longer a "rating" company and our past rating was always on the hotel only - not the dining room. Thank you for your comment regarding the coffee maker. We prefer not to have them in the rooms as it can cause damage (spills, stains etc) that will lower our high standard of cleanliness and quality. Coffee/tea, juice etc is always available at our front desk between 3pm and 10pm daily. We have also received a couple of comments in regards to our soap dispensers and we would like to state that this is done in an attempt to protect our environment. The amount of plastic produced and thrown in the landfills every day because of hotel shampoo/conditioner/soap containers is outrageous and we are attempting (one hotel room at a time) to keep our planet a little cleaner. Thank you for the comment regarding the blinds - the "midnight sun" can definitely be a problem in this area - even for the locals! We will definitely take this under advisement and look into an alternative type of window covering. Thank you again for your comments and concerns. We hope you enjoyed your stay in Haines Junction and that you will return to this area again in the future!

The Raven is a very nice pleasant lodging establishment on the Alaska Highway. The rooms are not fancy, but they are clean and quiet and they are nicely laid out. We liked the dispensers for shampoo and shower gel in the bathroom. Wi-fi costs $5 extra, but for us it was well worth it. The rooms are not air conditioned, but we did not find that to be a problem. The breakfast the hotel serves is wonderful with plenty of choices. They are not serving dinner in 2012, which is a pity, because based on our experience, it would have been very delicious.

Haines Junction does not appear to be a prime overnight spot on Alaska-bound travels, but if you do need to overnight in Haines Junction, I'd highly recommend the Raven.

Unfortunately the restaurant was closed for 2012 season :(
This is not one of those Alcan motels you can find almost anywhere along the highway. The staff was very friendly, room was clean and the premises are clearly taken care of. HJ is quite small community but we noticed that the village bakery has some singer-songwriter evenings etc. It´s just around the corner of the Raven! (Well, pretty much everything around here is.).

One notch below five stars because of the value. It might be Alcan standard, but still I find CAD 145/night expensive.

Room Tip: Ask 2nd floor. Nothing wrong in the 1st. one, but you might get a nice balcony.

Thank you for your very kind words and comments. It is nice to know that our efforts are noticed and appreciated! The Village Bakery really is a great place to go on Friday evenings (well, every day actually), to enjoy their Salmon Bake and live, local artists! Always something to see and do in Haines Junction. As for the tip regarding asking for a room on the second floor - we do not have a second floor of rooms. Our main level consists of all of our rooms and the upper level is our dining room (now our breakfast area) only. Would be great to have rooms on the second level, as the view is incredible - well isn't it every where in Haines Junction. Thank you again for your comments. We hope if you are ever visiting this area again that you stop and visit with us.
