“fabulous view, food even better !”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

Usually when you get a stunning view, the food is second rate. At Fraiche the view is stunning and the food is incredible.
The offer a degustation with wine pairing (5 courses for $95). You don't really know what you are getting as the chef makes it up for you depending on what is fresh in the kitchen. You can, however, suggest that you do not like certain things (I don't like oysters).
We had a crostini with fresh local peach topped with a fresh soft cheese and garnishes. Paired with a lovely white. At that point I was satisfied totally - but, four more items to come !
Next was sashimi tuna with a citrus froth and razor thin slices of cucumber and apple. Even better than the first dish.
Next was a medley of mushrooms with a poached egg. Again paired with a wonderful wine.
Next was a steak done perfectly with a medley of baby veg (carrot, beet, turnip, potato, parsnip) all in a spectacular au jus.
Dessert was a butter cake with a cream topping on a bed of a caramel sauce that was pure heaven.
My comment would be, besides the very reasonable price, is I cannot say which dish was the best --- they were all individually magnificent.
We will return.

A bit of a drive to get to, 10 minutes from Ambleside, 20 minutes from downtown Vancouver - but oh so worth it - afterall you are half way up the mountain (with the stunning view).

“Really?”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

My opinion? - really poor meal ... Weird menu items, poorly executed. Went to order oysters ... None left. had scallops appetizer instead ... Very disappointing - overdone and chewy. Had what is touted on the menu as "The Perfect Egg" (and then redescribed in a condescending way by the waiter ... "cooked in water at 63 degrees for one hour, blah, blah, blah". In actuality a tiny poached egg floating in water with some sea asparagus for $18 ... I was embarrassed to have fallen for it. My main was truly awful and not as advertised in the menu description. Bison short ribs with an jicama/fennel slaw - short ribs were tender but that's all there was to say ... The taste was not pleasant ... Could have made better myself ... The "slaw" turned out to be cabbage and carrot? really? You think I won't notice that it's not jicima and fennel? That was all that was on the plate ... Looked really unappetizing.

The amuse bouche was absolutely laughable ... Looked like a crumb you would find left over on your kitchen counter and tasted about the same ... No idea what it was supposed to have been.

$300 for 4 of us before tip ... This diner will never go back.

Also we started out with an 8:00 reservation but were called and told to arrive instead at 8:30 to ensure a window table (this was a wedding anniversary dinner). We arrived at 8:30 but weren't seated until 9:00 and were not seated at a window table ... Yes, we could see out the windows but we were not AT the window as requested and as we were led to believe we were waiting for.

I don't know how long it will take before word gets out that this restaurant is a waste of money and time (it is WAAAAAAAAY up there in WV on Chippendale) .... Disappointed? You bet.

“Very few view tables”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

This is a fabulous spot for a restaurant because of the commanding view, but our table was in the back area which is comfortable, but dark and kind of dreary. At the end of the meal, we asked if the front tables could be requested with future reservations, but we were informed by the maitre de that the front tables went to people who came regularly. We came for my husband's birthday and we were in very nice clothes, enjoyed the fine food and wine, are polite and non-imposing, but we in our sixties and we aren't celebrities. Maybe they only want young celebrities- shame on them if this is their objective. We found all their service toward us lack-luster and almost dismissive. For a $200.00 bill, it was a disappointment to us.

“Tasting menu”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

Our second visit--this time with a new chef,so decided to have the adventurous tasting menu with wine pairing.
We found that some of the courses were delightful, others disappointing--particularly the game meats.
The pairing of the wines with the courses could have been better matched with the dishes in our opinion.
The sommelier was very good in explaining each wine...but we felt it would have been better to order wines separately.
The view is great,if you are at a window table.
Sevice was very good.
