“Great spot in remote PEI, slightly dated hotel.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2011

My girlfriend and I spent 5 nights at the Rodd Mill River Resort. The location is fantastic and the golf course superb but the hotel itself is tired and in desperate need of a re-furb, although we were comfortable throughout our stay. The food and service was very good but we just felt like we had stepped into the 1980's with the decor and presentation of the hotel. PEI itself was fabulous.

I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at this resort in the fall of 2011. I was excited as this hotel is considered 'fancy' in the area. Overall, I was not impressed at all with the service. The meal and bar service at the reception was great, but there were several other negatives. We stayed at the hotel the night before the wedding and paid extra so that we could check out of the suite anytime the day of the wedding. This was confirmed with the hotel a week before the wedding. Myself, and 3 other bridesmaids had booked rooms for the night of the wedding, and we confirmed with the hotel the week before the wedding, that we would be able to check into the rooms early on the day of the wedding. The reason for this was that the bridal party were all getting ready in the suite the day of the wedding, and wanted to be able to move things from one to another before we left for the wedding. This was also the purpose of paying extra (almost 40% of the cost of the suite) so that we could check out of the suite anytime that day - we didn't want to have to move everything from that room before we left for the wedding. Again, all this was confirmed with the hotel a week before and they assured us it would not be a problem. Needless to say, it was a problem, and NONE of the extra rooms were available for check in before we left for the wedding (1:30 pm). They also informed us we had to be checked out of the suite by 2 pm (which by 2 pm, we were walking down the aisle at the church). So that meant, 2 bridesmaids running up and down the stairs a dozen times moving things out of the suite and into another guest's room (also note - the hotel has 3 floors and NO elevator). This wedding took place in the off season, and essentially the only guests at the hotel that weekend were wedding guests, therefore the issue with the rooms couldn't have been lack of available rooms.

Another issue is the hotel does not have air conditioning. This was a problem for us, as we all got ready in the suite, and had the hair and makeup people come to us, so for the entire morning, there was about 12 people in our suite. The room was very hot and that does not bode well for hairstyles and makeup. We contacted the front desk to see if they had a fan or anything to help us out, but no. Apparently they use window air conditioning units and they had all been removed the month before (the day of the wedding, it was 18 degrees out). It was a very hot morning in there, with no breeze coming in the window.

The final issue was the morning after the wedding, check out is 11 am. 11 am is early, and so the bride and groom wanted a late checkout. I stay in hotels quite frequently and have never had a problem with calling for a late checkout. So the bride called the front desk to ask for a late check out (even an hour later), and was refused. So after spending nearly $4000 at their facility (not to mention all the hotel rooms booked, and money made during bar service), the front desk denied the bride and groom a late checkout. This was eventually rectified after an angry visit to the front desk manager.

So overall, I was not at all impressed and would have a hard time recommending this facility to anyone for a wedding. The meal was delicious, and the service for the reception and dance was great, but that doesn't make up for the other issues. The service does not match the cost and so called status of this resort.

We stayed 2 nights at the Rodd. Check in was smooth and very friendly. As a family they were quick to point out the few extras like free meal for kids, a beach ball for the pool, etc.
After leaving we noticed we left our pillow in the room. After getting back home called them and in a week the pillow arrived in the mail! What a generous gesture. The time and effort to track it down, package it and mail it was very "over the top".
Excellent and friendly staff.

Room Tip: ask for room that ourlooks the golf course. Great view of the pond and sprinkler of 18th hole

Another reviewer hit the nail on the head - Rodd seems to be letting this place go. As you walk through the entrance, make sure not to trip on the broken terra cotta tiles. Once inside, you may detect the scent of 30 year old musty carpet and the buzz of dehumidifiers. My room had a view of shingles that had well exceeded their 25 year lifespan. The fish and chips featured frozen, thawed, re-frozen and re-thawed fish with a distinctly mushy mouth feel. Would not recommend staying or eating here. The golf course is nice, but shabby compared to the Rodd courses on the East side of the island. I can only imagine what the Big Break contestants thought - good thing it wasn't featured on the show.

Nice facility, beds were very comfortable, check in and check out were easy. Employees were very pleasant. My food was good, but my companions steak was over cooked. But the rest of the dinner was good. Would go back there anytime. Central location for what we want to do and see.

We stayed 2nights and found it lovely. The staff was very friendly and accommodating - from the front desk to the golf shop to the pool/aquaplex facility to the restaurant. Overall the resort needs some upgrading ,especially as regards the bike trail info.We hired bikes (cheaply) and although the bikes were not well kept, the helpful staff made up for it. We played tennis and enjoyed the indoor pool. The golf was great in that we are a family of 4,beginners and were able to play 3 holes of golf for free ,all equipment provided!! There was no pressure to book tee off times and we could play as much as we wanted (i.e. 3 holes over and over). The restaurant was great value and good .
It was a lovely stay and we would be back.

We stayed here in July 2010. We had read the reviews and thought it would be a great place to stay.

The problem we had were the bugs flying around in the room and one morning, I woke up to my wife screaming as a bug had been crawling on her body in her bed. We don't know if this is a seasonal issue or hotel issue.

We mentioned this to a staff member during breakfast and she spoke to management and told us it could be that because we were on the ground floor, it would have more bugs. Breakfast was very good, my wife order waffles and I had their buffet, stuffing myself to the gills. It had a good variety and the food was of good quality.

The staff were nice enough to move us into a different room, but alas, bugs were still there and I ended up killing three that were flying around before we went to sleep. No screaming wife the second morning.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating.

We didn't get to use the amenities as we were there mostly to sleep. The internet service was reliable and relatively fast.

We would stay there again if invited to do so. It seemed more business oriented and for golfers as there was a golf course on site.
