“A unique experience”
Reviewed February 28, 2012

We have been to the Domain four times now, always in winter, and each visit was special. For us, the main attractions are the food, the remote location (the silence!) and the superb network of cross-country ski trails. The cabins are basic and functional -- the average Motel 8 has fancier decor. But that's not the point. Sitting by the wood fire sipping tea after a couple of hours on the trails in that blessed silence is wonderfully restorative. And then there's dinner, usually brilliant.

Room Tip: If you ski, a cabin with an enclosed veranda is handy for storing skis and poles.

By your response, it is clear you understand that a visit to the Domain is an opportunity to be part of nature and to experience a more genuine way of life. The Domain of Killien is a very special place. While it might be considered somewhat rustic to some, the majority of our guests find it romantic and a welcome change from typical hotels. We encourage and strive for this kind of reputation.

We found your comments about the decor somewhat surprising. You see, most of our pieces have been hand picked from antique stores and are valuable. Much of it is early Canadian, and we are very proud of the history. Every piece of furniture and interior decoration at the Domain has a story. Perhaps you simply do not share an appreciation of older but fine furnishings. Our beds are of high quality and comfort and the lounge and dining room are warm, welcoming and full of character.

We felt a response to you was justified, as we found your comment comparing us to a Motel 8 to be judgmental and misguiding, painting a very negative picture of us. I am sure you realize the affect this kind of flippant remark has on the decision of people that go to TripAdvisor to help them decide on a holiday destination. We hope that other readers will trust in all the other extremely supportive and positive reviews, and not take your comparison seriously. Otherwise, they will surely miss out on one of the most honest and special experiences available these days. Best regards

Attended a Business breakfast...and first time ever at the Domain even though I have lived in the area for over 20 years....
The "feel" is undeniable. Even while in my home area, I felt like I was away. Attention to the little things..that simply made me happy and grateful to be participating. Breakfast was simply delightful and when the Chef came out to greet us wearing pearls...it all fit! It must be magical to stay there as someone not used to the beauty that is here in the Highlands.

We chose the Domain of Killien for a weekend getaway where we could get outside and enjoy excellent food and we were not disappointed. We had high hopes from the reviews and recommendations we'd received and the Domain totally delivered. The food was excellent, our favorites were the eggs Benedict and fresh croissants for breakfast, prosciutto and brie baguette sandwiches and hot chocolate for a picnic lunch, and the best Escargot we've ever had as an appetizer for dinner. The ski trails were pristine, and although the resort was full during our stay we felt alone when out in the woods. They take great care to groom the trails, which was a welcome treat for someone who is 6 months pregnant and not wanting to tumble on uneven terrain. the staff were friendly and accommodating, as were the Count and Countess whom we met during our stay. Overall, a great weekend and we'll definitely be back. There is a reason the Domain has been around so long and continues to draw back repeat visitors - no need to change and in fact we hope it stays the same for years to come!

We had previouslybeen to the Domain of Killien in the autumn and were excited about returning in Winter. Our expectations were high, both for the quality of meals, and the serenity and access to the trails. And, we were not disappointed in our expectations.

We arrived early February 16, 2012 and were greeted warmly by Stephanie and advised the trails were groomed and ready for backcountry skiing.
Our cabin was warm and inviting when we entered, so we left lighting the stove until evening ! The skiing was fantastic, Chris, the groomer, caught up with us and made the extra trip to the cabins to start the wood stove, so again we would arrive at a warm place.
The service is exceptional. Everyone is friendy and helpful and cannot do enough. The pride in the Domain of Killien is evident. The food is always delicious, plentiful and creative. We intend to visit often!

We spent our anniversary at the Domain of Killien and were certainly not disappointed! The lodge was comfortable and welcoming, the staff were great and the food was wonderful. My husband has a dietary restriction and staff were great about making sure there was food he could eat that was of the same level as everything else on the menu. Breakfast was also a nice spread - a good start to the day if you plan to spend it outside on the trails.

Lots of nicely groomed trails with lovely scenery and a good selection of gear available for guests to use. We stayed in the main lodge and our room was warm and welcoming - I haven't slept that well away from home in a long time. Despite the fact that there were quite a few guests when we were there, there was always a sense of privacy. You enver felt crowded of had to wait in line.

The fireplace in the main lounge just invites you to curl up with a book and relax...we'd definitely go back!

Room Tip: If you stay in the cabins you'll need to walk outside to the dining room for dinner, so I'd...
