If you make the journey to Levuka, it's worth it to stay in comfort at Levuka Homestay. The owners will help you arrange excursions and the gardener will act as your guide, if you want to do some walks around town or up to the peak. Oh, and the breakfasts are legendary - my personal favourites are the banana pancakes.

While you are in town, you should of course at least have a drink at the Royal Hotel though.

Like many of the other reviewers on this site, we were excited by Levuka homestay's strong reputation in lonely planet, trip advisor, etc... But we were very disappointed. We were on a shoestring budget on our honeymoon and made the mistake of giving our credit card info to Levuka Homestay before we arrived. (It's the only place in 2 weeks of bouncing around Fiji that even asked for the card info in advance). But our flight to Levuka was cancelled so we could not make it for our one-night stay. We called to try to work something out because we knew we were costing them some expected revenue - we suggested that we pay to cover the airport pickup and some reasonable percent of a one-night stay. They were totally unwilling to talk and they charged our credit card as if we had stayed there. That ruined our tight honeymoon budget and really put a damper on our good times. It was especially confusing given that Fiji was empty - every other place we stayed was at ~50% occupancy or less, so it was hard to believe that we were really costing these guys a lot of money in opportunity cost. Anyway, just be careful with these guys when you book ahead of time.

Stayed for 5 nights and enjoyed both Levuka and the Homestay. Beautifully designed accommodation a few mins walk from the town. The breakfasts are best described as brunch.
Cons - no internet access or TV and laundry is charged on a 'piece' basis.
Pros - very friendly hosts and staff who are happy to arrange walks and excursions. the rooms include fridges and fans and are very comfortable

Initial impressions are that this is the best accommodation available in Levuka - thoroughly recommended.

The Levuka homestay encapsulates what is so special about Fiji...the staff are so friendly and always smiling, the views are stunning and the food is incredible...and John and Marilyn ease you into "Fiji time" with a few bowls of grog and fascinating stories of their time living in such a beautiful part of the world. Whether you are 21 or 61 you will not want to leave....:)

John and Marylin made us feel so much at home at their homestay. While I did my diving open water certificate in Levuka with Ovalau Watersports my partner did some nice walks, had some nice chats with the people in the town and with John and Marylin. They explained us a lot about Fijian-culture and John took us even to a farewell ceremony of one of his friends. At the cozy and rich breakfast-table we met up with the other guests and had some interesting chats.
The room was wonderful, with AC, little terrace and nice bathroom. For the good view over the ocean you always can go up to the huge terrace upstairs.
If you go to Levuka, the Homestay is the best and most personal place to go to.

Had a busy schedule in Fiji and needed to chill out for a few days. Picked the Levuka Homestay on Overlau Island out of Lonely Planet - wow what a find! Levuka is a beautiful, friendly, rustic spot where you can get a real feel for rural Fiji. There are a number of good but modest restaurants at very cheap prices and a real old world pub. Oh, the taxis are very cheap!
Marilyn and John, the owners of Levuka Homestay have got it all just right. Expats from Perth, they make you very welcome, will willingly help with travel arrangements and advice and love to chat over drinks on their deck, which has the most magnificent view. Breakfasts are wonderful, possibly the best we have had anywhere, thanks Marilyn. The rooms are moderately sized, but very comfortable and well set up, complete with a/c and ceiling fan - lots of nice little touches to make you feel more welcome. The location is just right, off the main drag, shielded by vegitation and on a slope, but close to the centre of town. Talking of slopes, be prepared to climb a few steps. The rooms are on the lower level, but the deck and dining room are on the upper levels.
Getting there from Suva was a four hour very bumpy bus and ferry ride ride, but you do see a lot of the real Fiji. There were flights but they had just been withdrawn, we were told a new airline is about to start up.
A most memorable visit.

My husband and I just came back from a trip to New Zealand and Fiji. I'm a bit of a type "A" planner and had finally settled on the Levuka Homestay on the island of Ovalau. I am so happy we did! It was everything we had hoped it would be and more.

In planning the Fiji portion to our trip, I was finding it very hard to find "non-backpacker" accommodations for a reasonable price. Further, I did not want to stay on a resort where I felt I may not experience an authentic Fiji. Finally I read about the town of Levuka and the the Levuka Homestay. I booked it as quickly as I could!

John and Marilyn are absolutely the best hosts one could ask for. They seemed not only interested in our stay but invested in it. Marilyn watched the weather closely for us, knowing that we really wanted to snorkle on Calaqai and she rejoiced with us when the weather cleared on the day we wanted it to clear. They even lent us their snorkle gear and beach towels. John went above and beyond and called the airline for us the day before our departure because he had a feeling that our flight had changed. He was right, it was almost 12 hours earlier! If he had not called for us, we would have totally missed our flight. Further, on finding out about our flight, he went ahead and made all taxi arrangements for us. These are just two examples of the many times that both John and Marliyn exceeded any sort of expectations we had of our stay. Others include the already mentioned "famous breakfasts" (not enough can be said about them!), John helping us get an application submitted on time for my husband, the great conversations around the breakfast table in the morning or on the deck in the evening, and all the tour bookings we thought we'd have to make on our own.

The staff at the Levuka Homestay are also warm and welcoming. You can tell they have pride in the homestay as well and that the group as a whole is closely knit. Our room was always well cared for and beautiful, thoughtful details were left for us daily like fragrant plumeria flowers throughout the room and bathroom. Matilda and La taught us our first Fijian words and Nox, the gardener, followed up with many more. Nox offers walking tours around the town. Take one! He was born and raised on Ovalau and the tour is all the more fun for it. He knew everyone and therefore introduced us to everyone.

Also take Epi's tour of the Lovoni Village. He and his family are so incredibly interesting.

All in all, Levuka is a very special place and the Levuka Homestay is no different. It is filled with charm and sincerity. It is a refreshing departure from the usually jaded and gaurded world most of us live in. When people say "Bula" here, they mean it. There was not one person I met who didn't strike me as genuine. We were there a short 3 days and by the end we had been invited over to people's houses for dinner, drank Kava with locals, snorkled in the most beautiful snorkeling area I've ever been in, and were being stopped in the street by locals to chat. Very special indeed, and definitely the authentic stay I was hoping for.
