“Wonderful food and hospitality; brilliant walks with Nox”
Reviewed June 23, 2012

We really enjoyed our time in Levuka; it’s an off-the-beaten path location that offers much to the visitor. The Levuka Homestay was wonderful; the service here is excellent (much better than the 4 star hotel we stayed at in Lami Bay), the breakfasts huge and delicious, and the hosts John and Marilyn genial and warm. Our room, one of four, had a cathedral ceiling with ensuite bathroom and an outside seating area on the deck from which we could feast our eyes on the gorgeous greenery in the garden, including crab claw flowers, frangipani, red bananas, birds of paradise, lilies, and other tropical delights.

Nox, the Homestay's gardener, does tours around the town and surrounding area; these tours - we did the extended town tour and the plantation tour - were one of the highlights of our visit. We really enjoyed seeing and experiencing a bit of Fijian life in his company. He is a gracious and gentle man. See pictures and more info here: http://lmaclean.ca/2011/09/desert-island-and-plantation-walk/
and here: http://lmaclean.ca/2011/09/touring-the-town-with-nox-and-a-side-trip-to-caqalai/

While in Levuka, we really felt that we became part of the community; people were very friendly, inviting us in for impromtu kava and singalong nights. We also spent a day snorkelling and swimming on the small island of Caqalai, south west of Ovalau.

I am lucky enough to ‘have’ to come to Ovalau for work and whenever I come to Levuka I stay at the Homestay. I am not sure that I can add much to all of the brilliant comments already written (and I have already posted a review before) but this is truly one of the best places I have ever stayed in. Overall the experience is just fantastic – the staff and owners here are lovely, friendly and professional too. They really know what people want from their accommodation. The rooms are great but for me it’s the small things that make a difference – for example the hug, fluffy bath towels or fresh flowers in the bathroom. And those breakfasts...... Even though I’ve been here quite a few times, the novelty and brilliant experience of these breakfast never wears off! I normally stay here as part of a bigger trip to Fiji for work and this is by far my favourite part. Vinaka vakalevu John & Marilyn!

After reading Lonely Planet, and the reviews on tripadvisor, I had great expectations staying at Levuka Homestay, and YES, every positive comments is true. My expectations were fulfilled. I have nothing new to add.

Marylyn and John are wonderful people and very generous hosts. Tusen takk (Nox can translate). Staying here is like visiting relatives and friends. Thanks also to Ma and La for the way they cleaned my room. That gave me a feeling of care. Every day fresh flowers in the room, and even in the bathroom. And thanks to Nox for excellent guiding around Levuka, and for introducing me to the local people.

Levuka is it self worth a journey. People here are extremely open and friendly. After 3 days I felt like I was a part of this community.

A massive thanks to John and Marilyn for looking after us. It was a week we wont forget in a while. Same story came for 2 nights stayed longer....how could one leave??? We were made to feel part of the family that run the place, everything from the impecable housekeeping, the tortourous walk up to the peak with nox and of course the breakfast which kept you full till dinner. The room was spacious and had everything we needed.
The late afternoon sundowners were wonderful on the top balacony and the views were unbelievable.
Piece of paradise in Levuka? We found it!

Before travelling to Levuka, we had read the reviews for Levuka Homestay. We had never read such a universally positive set of reviews. However, from the moment we arrived till the moment we left, we were made to feel very welcome and virtually "part of the family". Our room was delightful and the staff were fantastic- well above and beyond what you would normally expect. The main credit, however, goes to the extraordinary hosts, John and Marilyn, who invited us each evening for sunset drinks on the balcony overlooking the town of Levuka and the beautiful bay. The breakfasts were mentioned in many posts and we were not disappointed. They were exceptional, including the last morning when we had to leave by 7am to catch our flight. We assumed that the "included" breakfast would not happen at this hour, but the night before, John and Marilyn said, "we'll see you at 6am for breakfast" and it was every bit as enjoyable as the previous ones. We have travelled to many parts of the world and it is not an "award" that we give lightly, but we believe that John and Marilyn are indeed our "friendliest hosts ever". We recommend Levuka Homestay with great enthusiasm.

Thanks a lot again (for the third time) John and Marilyn.

Was absolutely fantastic to come home to your homestay. The beautiful rooms with all the details, that show how much you care about everything. The wonderful breakfast from the smoothies to the homemade pancakes and eggs. The view is just amazing and all the stories about Levuka and the whole island are just amazing. Did a great trip with Nox up to the plantation and had a wonderful time.

Vinaka vakalevu and hope to see you soon again
