“Good but noisy”
Reviewed September 29, 2012

We stayed at the Swan for a family event and enjoyed the room and village before going to sleep. It was NOISY. Cars driving past and other loud guests made for a really poor nights sleep, as well as a bed that's probably older than the hotel: hard and lumpy.
The room was great with a lovely bathroom and great breakfast the next day, just sad it was tarnished by only a few hours of bad sleep. A bit overpriced too.

My family and I stayed here for the weekend of a family wedding and we were delighted with the welcome, the rooms, the lovely gardens and the happy, relaxed atmosphere provided by all the staff. The beds were very comfortable and our whole stay, with various members of the family arriving and leaving at different times, was efficiently and kindly managed - even down to keeping an eye on Grandad whilst the girls went off to get our hair done and the boys went to the Gym in nearby Godalming!
We were very happy with our stay and intend to return when we are next in the area.

My husband and I booked to stay on Friday 7th September, as a treat for ourselves. We were tempted by the Friday night special Dinner, Bed and Breakfast deal and found it to be good value for money.

We were warmly greeted, shown to our room and given general information including late access arrangements should we decide to go out and return after the front door was locked.

The Swan was tastefully decorated, both in the public areas and the bedrooms. The rooms were well equipped with some thoughtful touches and bed was very comfortable. We stayed in a room at the front of the hotel and due to its proximity to the road outside the traffic noise was a little intrusive, and when larger vehicles rumbled by the vibration was quite discernable. My husband seemed to sleep though this well enough however with the help of a good red wine and a smooth glass of port with his cheese and biscuits!

At dinner we decided to opt for bread and olives rather than a full blown starter each. These were duly brought to our table together with a dish with a somewhat meagre butter pat but no side plates were supplied. This left us wondering if we were supposed to butter the bread on our hands or on the table, but upon request the waitress was happy to bring plates which made the process much easier. The bread and olive selection was very tasty and we were enjoying nibbling our way through them when the waitress appeared with our main courses. We were rather surprised and explained that we were not ready as we were still eating our starter. She duly took them back to the kitchen but I was fearful that the meal would suffer if 'kept warm' until we were ready. I needn't have worried, however, as when the main course came it was delicious and certainly appeared to have come directly from the pan, especially given that we had chosen lamb cutlets, mine medium rare and my husband's medium well done. Very enjoyable together with a nice red wine and followed by a selection of cheese and biscuits.

We went for a stroll around the village after our meal, taking advantage of the balmy evening, before returning to our room.

We slept reasonably well although as previously mentioned my husband slept somewhat more soundly than I did. On going down to breakfast we were very pleased with the choice of cereals, yogurt, delicious fresh fruit salad, pastries, juices etc. This did not deter us from enjoying a beautifully presented and very tasty 'full English' together with toast, tea and coffee.

Despite the two small niggles with regard to the evening meal and the road noise we would recommend it as good value for money in charming surroundings.

After reading a review in The Pepperpot Directory, my wife and I enjoyed a fantastic meal on 29th August our 3rd Wedding Anniversary. We were greeted professionally and warmly having prebooked. After enjoying a pre dinner drink in the garden to the rear we moved to our table at the front of the restaurant. Our food was served with utmost care. My wife had the foie gras followed by the calves liver which was sumptuous; while I enjoyed the chicken, pork and black pudding terrine followed by the boned quail which was excellent. We would certainly book again and enjoy some more of the beautiful menu - Michelin star quality.

Went to dinner there with a couple of friends having visited twice previously. Both times pefectlly satisfactory. Sadly it was not a very enjoyable experience. Lady owner was surly (far more interested in a couple on the next door table and almost ignored our request for help). Food was OK but uninspired and rather tasteless. Staff were cheerful although not overly attentive. Final straw was when the owner clearing the table next to us just as we were leaving threw a glass of wine over the table spattering our companion's trousers. Apology, such as it was, was half hearted and not very convincing. Got the distinct inpression that we were something of a nuisance. Shan't be going there again Pity

We are so sorry that your visit to The Swan Inn was not more enjoyable. Since all our customers are of great importance to us, ignoring anyone is something we would feel very badly about and we can only apologise if you felt you were ignored. Further, if you had mentioned that you found your meal ‘uninspired and tasteless’, we would have acted upon that promptly but there was no indication from your table that this was the case. Lastly, we are sorry to hear that your guest had wine stains on their clothes. At no time did we realise wine had been spilt over anyone – we would have offered to pay for cleaning if we had known. We strive to provide good food and excellent service and we are surprised that you have had such a different experience and hope you will try us again another time.

We had been to Glorious Goodwood and wanted to break the journey. The Swan was perfect. Excellent food and drink and nice room. There was a little traffic noise but nothing to worry about. I look forward to going back in the winter with a log fire going!

Food is ok but not fantastic....rooms and decor are superb...service in the restaurant was attentive and passable...however the owners do not appear to enjoy there hotel with guests..very grumpy......and bed by 11.30 ...no night gaps most disappointing..so no late drinks here.... breakfast was very poor .......continental breakfast that was not on the website and you are left to serve yourself and even cook your own eggs.........a most poor experience and we will not be going back in a hurry !!!
