Crystal Mountain Hotels Alpine Inn
Reviewed April 10, 2014

This is the second time my daughter and I have spent a couple of days at Crystal and stayed at the Alpine Inn. We used the Travelzoo special both times and feel that it offers a pretty good deal. The Inn itself is basic, but our room was clean and comfortable - two double beds, good sized bathroom, great WiFi. There were few people at the Inn at this time of year (April, spring break) so the Inn was very quiet. How well you enjoy your stay might depend upon the room you get. During our previous stay, the Inn was full and we had a corner room that was quite small with one double bed, had poor in-room WiFi, and contained a tiny bathroom. The breakfast is very basic and nothing to write home about, but it provides a decent start to the day. We ate our dinners at the Inn and the selection is a bit unispiring and a little on the expensive side, but to be expected since it's the only game in town (we didn't visit the Snorting Elk since my daughter is a teenager). The Inn isn't ski in-ski out, but it's not a long walk to the lifts and the parking is great. All in all, our stay was nice and I would consider doing it again next year.

Room Tip: Our room was on the second floor, near the staircase. Had the Inn been busy, this would have been ex...

Down-to-Earth comforts. Not for the high and mighty looking for posh accommodations. Sure, the room was small but this is a skier's get-away not a palace. Loved the people running the joint and the restaurant was decent. Fun little bar downstairs called Snorting Elk. Ski vids on the walls and good conversation was enough for us. Nice locally brewed beers on tap. Super cafe adjacent with some killer pizzas. Price of everything was on par with skier stay-overs. Very close to main lodge and chairs/gondola. Lobby was comfy, but seating was often occupied by RV guests who wanted to cozy up to the gas fireplace. Still, we'll be back!

Room Tip: Book early for ski trips. Crystal is the state's best and does book up.

Comfortable lobby. Room was depressing. Heated floors in bathroom were the best feature. Convenient to the slopes. Ski all day and get a good night's sleep. Breakfast was OK, good coffee and nice staff.

Room Tip: No TV! Have a good book or magazine to read

We had reservations at the Alpine Inn, but discovered there was no TV in the room (my wife was upset, since she wasn’t going to ski, she wanted a TV in the room). The Hotel staff was very accommodating and immediately moved us to another hotel (Quicksilver Lodge) across the parking lot (there are actually three properties at Crystal Mountain managed by Crystal Mountain Hotels). The room was small, like the Alpine Inn, but it did have a flat screen TV. All the hotel properties are walking distance to the ski lifts and parking is specifically reserved for the hotels. Unfortunately, the toilet in our room kept acting up (tank wouldn’t fill), but again the staff came quickly and worked on it every time it acted up (although I don’t think they ever really got it working at 100%). They also let us stay an hour after check out. A breakfast buffet was included with our room and served at the Alpine Inn Restaurant (a short walk across the parking lot). It included all the essentials needed to get you ready for a day of skiing. We also ate at the Alpine Inn Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant is, as they say “charming” with views of the snow covered trees and service was good. The wiener schnitzel was good, but a little greasy and the lamb sirloin was ok, but not very hot by the time it made it to the table (they need to warm up the plates to keep the food hot while it is served). Overnight lodging is scarce on the way to Crystal Mountain, so stay at the Mountain and enjoy easy access to the lifts and plenty of drinks at the Snorting Elk Cellar pub (just below the Alpine Inn Restaurant).

Room Tip: Choose the Quicksilver Lodge if you want to have a TV in the room.

Imagine you had an uncle with an old house that hadn't been renovated in 40 years, with 70's décor, tiny rooms, and bathrooms that were functional but Spartan. This is the Alpine Inn. The rooms are fine for a guys' getaway, but certainly not a place to take a girl you're trying to impress. That said, everything is clean and the beds were fine.

Lame as the rooms are, there are a lot of upsides to this place. The location is fantastic. There is also a lobby downstairs that is fairly cozy and has WiFi. Most of all, there are two onsite restaurants that are very good and offer gluten-free food; the deli downstairs has good food and gluten-free bread; the Alpine Inn Restaurant upstairs has gluten-free noodles and a nice wine list. Yes, both restaurants are overpriced but that's to be expected in a resort setting.

We stayed here in August for a night and then rode the gondola up to the top and hiked down. Enjoyed our meals at the restaurant too. Appreciated how close everything was. Drove up to Sunrise the next day and did more hiking. such a beautiful area!

We have a cabin nearby and celebrated our 24th anniversary at the Alpine Inn Restaurant. The staff was great and accommodated our need to make it to the gondola for a beautiful sunset. Food was great. Atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, but still festive. We were able to walk right in and get seated. They even surprised us with an anniversary slice of cheesecake to go for our gondola ride. We will keep coming back.
