“A hidden gem along highway 410”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in one of the loft suites.
This was a cozy, well equipped suite with 3 beds and 2 bathrooms.
It was very quiet at night and the beds where comfortable.
We had a private balcony with view of the swimming pool and hot tub.
BBQ are at your disposal.
The local food shop was small but you can find here almost everything you need at a decent price.
Just one thing this resort is located on highway 410 not on crystal ski area (7,5 miles drive)
Whenever we come back to this area we will stay here.

Great place to stay for 2 nights. Clean and very friendly staff. The location is 10 minutes away from Mt.Rainer Park entrance. My only complaint is that you are not going to find a good place to eat close by especially for dinner :( .. I' m sure that nobody wants to drive 30 miles back to find a decent place to eat. At the resort, they sell groceries but highly expensive, is not worth it. My advice is that take your own groceries with you and cook. The resort have a BBQ on Thursdays ( of course you have to pay for it) but is an alternative if you want to take a break from he kitchen 1 night. Other than that everything was just fine.

We appreciate guest input, good and bad, as it helps us get better. Our main reason for responding to this review is to clarify a few things about food. We are small (just 23 suites and a Honeymoon Cabin) so we are not large enough to support a restaurant just based on the guests staying here. If we had a restaurant, we would have to attract people driving by on the road, which would completely change the atmosphere of our place. Most guests staying here like the fact that we're small, and that you feel like you're away from the hustle and bustle.

However, it's certainly not necessary to drive 30 minutes for dinner!

* There are restaurants within a 10-15 minute drive either direction from us, and when we used to live in Seattle, we never had a problem driving 10-15 minutes to eat out. The Alpine Inn and Summit House at Crystal are good summer/fSeptember/winter options for more gourmet fare, and the town of Greenwater has the Naches Bar & Grill year-round that many of our guests enjoy for the local atmosphere and good, casual food.

* We have in-room "Heat and Eat" meals available that guests seem to love, since they're delicious and a chance to eat dinner in, without having to do any work.

* We are usually told our store prices are very reasonable, so I was a little surprised by this guest's comment. Our grocery prices are significantly lower than any hotel where we've ever stayed (and much lower than the markets at Crystal or in Greenwater), and I think if you read other reviews you'll find that guests appreciate the variety of items we carry. We also sell eggs by the egg, butter by the stick, etc.. to try to make it easy on people who are just staying a few nights.

* Our summer barbecues are fun and guests seem to really enjoy meeting and chatting with other people from around the country and the world. We have barbecues Thursday and Sunday nights from July 1-Labor Day.

We still remember our first visit here over Labor Day almost 18 years ago, and we enjoyed the opportunity to soak in the pool and hot tub after hiking, cook in, make a fire and then relax and watch a movie. However, there are definitely other options very close by if that's your preference.

Thank you for considering us for your next vacation/getaway.

Spent 3 days/2 nights at the Alta Crystal Resort, lodging in one of the "Loft Chalet Suites," with 2 friends. We booked through the "Last Minute Specials" page (on line only) and highly recommend that route because the suite we got was outstanding: clean, cosy, and very well equipped (fireplace etc.), with a balcony overlooking the pool and jacuzzi area. The resort is relatively close to the Mt. Rainier National Park entrance and to the Crystal Mountain ski resort/gondola. We visited both, spending a day at each. It's well worth taking the gondola to the top of Crystal Mountain and having lunch at the top (reserve in advance), AND walking down afterwards... We ate at the Alpine Inn "Snorting Elk" restaurant at the Crystal Mountain ski resort one night and did the "BBQ" at the Alta Crystal Resort the next night (both very good!). We used the pool and jacuzzi at the Alta Crystal, and appreciated the little shop on site which has one of everything! Owners bend over backwards to help the guests, and there is lots to do around the beautiful grounds: ping pong, frisbee toss, horse-shoe throwing, hiking ... you name it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Room Tip: Second floor with a view (of the trees!)

Great Resort. Liked the service provided by the resort. The services were excellent, had good events planned for the guests which was a nice experience on the trip. The location is good, around 12 minutes drive to Crystal Mountain and had few of the trails which started within and around the resort, so one could hike on them without driving a car out.

Though we hoped to had better amenities for the price charged. It was a little expensive for the cabins the had for rent.

We really enjoyed meeting this guest and remember him well. He and his wife had family visiting from overseas, and it was fun to share our suggestions with them -- and to see this area through their eyes. We feel lucky to live some place so beautiful.

We are glad he thought our service was excellent as that is our goal! We would be even happier if he had given us 5 out of 5, but that just gives us something to strive for. (We are happy that others have given us this rating:) Regardless, we appreciate the fact that he took time to write a review and give us his input.

The descriptions on this property's website seriously understate how nice this place is. I was expecting some sort of studio room with a small kitchen and instead I got a full one bedroom apartment. I also rented a larger space for my kids/grandkids that had an loft with two sleeping spaces in addition to the one bedroom space below. Everything was in perfect condition and very comfortable, The evening BBQ and campfire was great. The only drawback is the lack of close-by restaurants. There are some within about 15 minutes though, and the store on the property is surprisingly well stocked. We only stayed 2 nights and wished we could have stayed longer.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

Steve, Vivian and their staff succeed at making every possible effort to make their cozy little ski resort a welcoming, friendly home for their guests. I reserved our 1 bedroom loft, which had three beds, sight unseen and without the ability to check Tripadvisor beforehand. What started as a spontaneous booking for a place to rest our heads on a tour of the Northwest's volacanos (this one's near Mt. Rainier National Park) ended as a "see you next time." Our friends live in Seattle and will go back to the Alta Crystal again and again. (We are from Boston and may not get back to the Northwest for a while.)

The staff was friendly in booking, clear in their description of the accomodations and the area and went out of the way to send not one but two separate emails with directions from where we were in Mt. St. Helens, and then with an invitation to their weekly BBQ the following day. We arrived tired and hungry, and were smoothly shown to our parking spot and essentially a fully equipped condo with a wood-burning stove. My friend enjoyed the hot tub while the kids and I checked out the rec cabin, with ping pong, a very nice fooseball set, games, couches and a big screen TV.

By then, Steve had made the campfire and set up the grill for a BBQ, which was absolutely delicious and graciously set out with food for the kids, salmon burgers and a gorgeous spinach salad with all the fixin's for the adults, desserts and later, smores for the kids. They even gave us the skewers for roasting our marshmallows.

The rooms were clean and well-done, very mountain lodgy, which is just what we had hoped for. The kitchen was fully furnished, the coffee complimentary, and the dishes even put in the dishwasher for us when we ran out for our day of hiking, leaving breakfast dishes on the table.

My six year old daughter LOVED the loft, as did our 8 year old traveling companion, and were endlessly excited about the beds in the nooks and the ladder to the loft. There was a full bathroom on both floors. It was like a two floor condo.

I made a roaring fire in the wood stove, which worked great (we were in A6). The resort provided the wood, the kindling and newspaper, the matches, and some cute instructions on how to use their stove and how to ensure a great fire. They attended to every detail the way they attended to the wood-burning stove, and thought of every need before we had it.

We decided to stay an extra night. I could have stayed longer, if work and Boston didn't beckon me away from the gorgeous trails and vistas of the Northwest.

The kids loved the loft, the pool, the rec cabin, the campfires and walking around the cozy, homey grounds. I loved the cozy feel of the "condo", the beds (nice sheets, comfortable mattresses), the location (just outside the Mount Rainier park) and the fantastic little grocery store tucked handily into their little front office. We all loved "movie night" the next night, with drinks, candy, popcorn, and a personal talk from Steve about his adventures climbing Rainier, and some of the local folks now famous for setting the gold standard in mountain guide training.

It was a little pricey, at $250 per night with all the taxes, but since we were two families staying together, we loved having separate spaces while still sharing a "home."

The owners' knowledge of the area and the hiking trails made our last day in the mountains so memorable and just perfect. At Steve's suggestion, we took a trail great for the parents and manageable for the kids, and had a hike which gave me the best views I've ever had on a hike, ever. And, a crystal, pure, clean, clear mountain lake, filled with glacier water warmed from the thaw, which, yes, we jumped into it and swam around like a couple of happy little families on vacation without a care in the world. And, isn't that what vacation is all about?

Room Tip: The second floor rooms were more quiet. We stayed in A6, which was great, and everything worked real...

Staff are pleasant and helpful. Enjoyed the BBQ and our room. Location is near Crystal Mtn. ski area with the gondola ride and restaurant. Short drive to scenic Sunrise and hiking trails. Would have rated four stars except for a herd of elephants in the room above us who decided to break camp at 3:30 am without any consideration to those still sleeping. If you are not a hiker it may behoove you to find other accomodations.
