We have gone to Alta every year since we moved to Seattle. Our first experience in March 2006 sold us--swimming and sitting in the hot tub while big fat snowflakes cam down on our heads, an elk herd coming right through the resort, and of course skiing at Crystal Mountain. Alta has a great blend of old-time lodge feel with modern amenities.

This is a good - not great - little place within 15 minute drive of Crystal Mountain ski resort (which is the most likely reason you're considering this property during the winter). The rooms are cozy, some with fireplaces, but the furnishings, the cabinets, the counters and the appliances are all a little tired (meaning quite used, needing update). It does have a great heated pool, a very hot Jacuzzi, Direct TV and free WIFI and the staff are very nice and friendly. Unless you bring your own food to cook in your unit, you will either have to eat at restaurants up at the ski resort or at the tavern 15 miles away. The resort shop does sell decent frozen food.

VERY IMPORTANT: This is a two story property and it's a good idea to get a 2nd floor room (most have little balconies) because the entire place is made of wood. We were on the 1st (ground) floor and one morning the guests above us decided to get up at 4:45am, pack up for an hour and then leave. Sleeping through such a racket is impossible.

We always appreciate feedback, good and bad, as it only helps us get better. We're constantly trying to improve, and we took a look at some things through this guest's eyes and addressed them. In the past month, we replaced the baseboard heaters, outlets and thermostats in all the rooms here, and put new, nicer wooden trim in all the One Bedroom Suites (which is where this guest stayed). In his particular unit, we also refinished the dining table and cabinets. We think these things, in combination, were making the room look a little worn.

This particular guest stayed over Easter weekend, and it's true several of our guests got up early to go to Crystal's Sunrise service at the summit. On the positive side, it was one of the most glorious sunrises ever, but we're sorry his sleep was disturbed. It's not that common that people on vacation get up at 5 a.m.!

We sincerely appreciate guest input. We value our guests and want people to love it here. Thanks for helping us get better.

24 people from our sports/social group stayed at this resort for 3 days, two nights Friday March 22-Sunday March 24. We found the accommodations quaint. After skiing all day it was wonderful to jump into a 90 degree heated outdoor swimming pool and a hot tub that was actually hot.
The log cabin with an original fireplace was a special place for meeting others to eat, socialize, play games, and watch TV and movies provided by the resort.
The owners made spaghetti dinner with fabulous sauce. Not only was a nice outside fire provided for the mores but all of the smores' ingredients. We saw elk in the woods.
The owners have poured their heart into this resort for the last 16 years and it showed. Our apartment accommodations were great and we had a kitchen with good supplies. We watched movies supplied

We visited the Alta Crystal Resort for President's Day Weekend with 2 other families of four. I wish I could give it four stars, but I'm super picky. 3 1/2 would be my ideal choice!

The resort is clean and cute. Our room had a small kitchen with dishes, mugs, silverware, and cooking appliances. It has a two burner stove top, a small oven, coffee maker, microwave, dishwasher, and small fridge. We had a dining table with 4 chairs. The room had one bedroom and a leather futon sleeper sofa. We did not have a loft room. Our bed was comfortable, but the kids thought the futon was not too cozy. We did dinners with our friends and their kids each night, taking turns hosting. That means we had 6 adults and 6 kids in each room for dinner! It was pretty packed, but super fun. The rooms are rustic, which was fine with us for an "old school style ski bum vacay". They are a little dark and slightly worn. But, they are clean and well attended to.

One of the things I loved was the wood burning stove. It took a while for me to learn how to make a fire, but the resort gave well written instructions on how to get one going! It worked and we loved the cozy smells and sounds of the real fire in our room.

They also have a very cool community center with a ping pong table and large gathering area. The resort hosted movie nights, smores cooking, and karaoke, and other fun events. We didn't take advantage of them because we were with our friends, but it sounded like people were having a ton of fun!

The highlight of our stay was the service. The people here are so friendly! Every person at the main desk was helpful and kind. There is a small grocery on site with cheese, frozen pizzas, pasta and sauce, etc. That made it super convenient to cook.

The pool area was a lot of fun for us and the kids. The pool is heated so you can swim in the winter, but it still was a tad cold. The hot tub is pretty small and was very crowded. It's pretty outdated and both the hot tub and pool were slightly dirty due to the amount of people using the area. Also, bring your own towels! The hotel will provide you with pool towels, but you have to ask at the front desk.

The resort is a short drive to Crystal mountain. We put the kids in private lessons and had a really fun day. If you want to eat at the restaurant at the top of the gondola, be sure to make reservations as they book up quickly.

We will be back to this resort. It wasn't fancy, but we sure had fun. :)

Stayed here with friends for a weekend of skiing. They give you 2 free lift and gondola tickets with each night of rental ($150 savings), so it makes the price very reasonable for what you get. Though our room was on the smaller side with all our gear strewn around, it was comfortable and very easy to cook in, which saved us even more money. But be aware that when renting a room that sleeps multiple couples that one of the beds may be up in a loft with a very steep ladder. It made for some scary moments when having to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, and wasn't very comfortable.

Room Tip: Talk with the clerk at the front desk vs. relying on the information on the website. Ask for a room...

With another family, we were able to get the last two units on our winter break. This place books up so reserve early! It lives up to its popularity. The location was roughly 10 minutes from the lifts and on weekends the Crystal ski area parking lots can get very packed.

However you could easily spend a day in the heated pool, hot tub, small rec hall, and at the evening bonfire instead of skiing. The place is tucked into the forest and most rooms face the pool. Our one bedroom was spacious, well equipped, and very comfortable. The bottom units will hear people walking around in the top units. So I'd recommend a top unit if you have a choice.

The staff were great. They laid out a fun spread for the bonfire and were very friendly. This place feels more like visiting friends than staying at a resort.

Room Tip: Top floors will be quieter

We stayed one night between 2 ski days at Crystal Mountain. We all enjoyed the heated outdoor pool surrounded by snow laden trees. After a soak in the hot tub, we lit a fire in the woodstove and relaxed. Beds were pretty comfortable - even the sofabed was not bad. Everything was very clean, though beginning to show some wear. Free Wifi was nice to have as there is no cell coverage here. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially when we locked ourselves out of our room!
