“OK hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2014

The hotel is well located, right in the center of the city. You can easily walk to the various nearby restaurants (on a Monday night in early June, many of the restaurants were closed or their kitchens were closed) or take a walk along the water. The hotel itself is OK. The room was fine but could definitely use a little updating (paint, carpet). However, for a night or two stay, it is a good choice.

very decent hotel, well located in the , rather small, city center. The rooms are spacious, clean and well equiped. Very comfortable large beds, excellent bath room. The hotel is cosy, the bar and restaurants as well. Food is very good according to lacal standards and breakfast, served on table, is complete, good quality and warm. Staff is very friendly and helpfull. Can be reconnended if travelling in the saguenay region.

Room Tip: ask for a quiet room

We just spent 3 nights at this great hotel. The desk staff were all hospitable and very helpful in both languages. Our TV remote was not working properly and was replaced immediately. Our large well appointed room overlooked the raging river. The breakfast has lots of choices and is good value for the price. The hotel is within walking distance of a good variety of restaurants and attractions. I enjoyed the bike path network for running. We got home to discover we left garment bags in the room closet. A call to the hotel had their return organized with no issue. The area is scenic and the Alma folks so friendly that we plan to return for a Saguenay area vacation.

Room Tip: rooms that face the river have a lovely view. There was no street noise.

Hi everybody, I’ve just returned from a night stay at the Hotel Universel in Alma and here is my review. First I would like to mention that this is not my first time in Alma, I have stayed at other hotels here in the past. The Universal hotel is located in the heart of the city, from here you can access the cinema that’s below or a range of offices that are linked by a tunnel, it is by far the largest and the most complete hotel you will find within 100kms in any direction. Upon arrival at the reception there was someone who wanted a room but the hotel was full, as for myself I had a reservation and I was quickly registered and in my room within minutes. My room was on the second floor, it was a large and beautiful decorated room, the air conditioning system is silent and the beds are super comfy with quality linens. There’s also a Spa on this floor as well as the indoor pool, parking is free anywhere on the site. I had breakfast at the Bordelais and it was alright for the price, service was average but that’s because the place was full, there was a large group of cyclist that showed up at the same. All in all I definitely recommend this hotel and I will be returning as of spring next year. Cheers to all!!

My wife and I chose this hotel based on trip advisor and hotel.ca comments for the start of our bike tour of lac Saint Jean. We had booked a king bed room, and we were assigned a corner room overlooking the "cascades" of the river. Hence the name of the street "Boul. des cascades" . Excellent choice. Front desk staff equally friendly in French and/or English, and were full of information. We only had occasion to sample the restaurant for breakfast, but the bar was available for drinks and snacks, and both proved to be more than just acceptable. Very well done. The way our bike tour had to be modified due to rain, also required us to store our bikes with the hotel overnight, and that was taken care of without a hitch. On our following visit 2 days later, we were unable to reserve a king bed room, and were given a 2 queen bed room, also with the cascades view. All in all, very pleasant experience.

10 days into our tour of Ontario and Quebec we stayed here for 3 days, a slightly unusual choice for English visitors, we were not disappointed. Our room had a great view of the cascades and was large and comfortable. It had a 'pod' coffe maker which made great coffe but no facilities to make tea (good job we had our own kettle). All the staff were friendly and helpful though we had to do lot of miming with our lack of Quebec French and the staff's lack of English, apart from the front desk who spoke excellent English. Menues are all available in English and French. They have fridges available which can be borrowed for use in the room. we had an excellent dinner in the Chinese Buffet (one of the 2 restaurants) and the best value breakfasts we have found in any Canadian hotel. The Staff in the restauant, especially Sylvie, were also very helpful. There is a small pool and hot tub (though feels crowded when other people's children are jumping in) It was a bit of a drive from the normal foreign tourist route but worth it , and feels more foreign than other parts of Quebec. We particularly enjoyed cycling along Lac Saint-Jean at Parc Pointe-Taillon a beautiful national park though we did not see the resident Beavers or Moose.
