“A great option for Wells Gray”
Reviewed July 1, 2008

We recently stayed at the Clearwater lodge for 2 nights while stopping off at Wells Gray Park on our way from Vancouver to Jasper. We were very impressed with the hotel and thought it was excellent value. It was next to the main road through Clearwater (not that it ever got very busy!), so it was easy to find. Our room was at the rear of the hotel, so we were able to sit out on our balcony and look out to the forest and mountains, which was nice. (In fairness, I don’t suppose it is quite as nice in the rooms overlooking the road).

The room was very spacious, with a comfy bed. It had a small kitchenette area, which was fine for preparing a simple breakfast and small meals and the bathroom was clean and had a good shower. There was a good selection of TV channels and wireless internet access, which was handy for checking the weather and getting info on our ipod. The hotel also had a small restaurant that did rather nice food with a real home-cooked feel to it. There did not appear to be a very large selection of eateries in the area, so it was handy having somewhere on our door step (though the local pizza take-out place was pretty good and excellent value!).

We were a bit surprised how long it took to drive right to the entrance of the park. It didn’t look far on the map but it must have taken us at least 20-30 minutes! There were a handful of places along the way and one hotel right at the entrance, but they were obviously that much further away from civilisation, so on balance we were quite happy where we were.

The motel-look of the hotel does not do it justice and we would definitely recommend it as a stop-off point on the way too or from Jasper.

The Clearwater Lodge is an excellent place to stay in terms of as a base to travel and visit the nearby area.

if you want to go to Wells Grey Park for example, this is a good choice of few to stay in.

The staff were polite and helpful. (Not as friendly as most Canadians though).

The room was clean, but dated. The carpet in particular was a big shag pile, which was clean, but felt dirty due to the weight of it and the years old it must have been without a deep clean.

Having said that, it was very quiet and had all the basics you would need.

The laundry room in particular was something that no other hotel had had on our 3 week strip and we took great advantage of it! It only cost the equivalent of 50p for a wash and 50p for a dry! Great value. 9you do need you own travel wash).

The pool and hot tub were also quiet, with amazing views out over a small lake. They do get bears around here!

We would go back, as although it was dated, it is an excellent base for the local area.

  • Liked — The pool and laundry area
  • Disliked — The dated-ness

We stayed here for one night as a stop off between Jasper and Whistler as it is a good drive. The hotel itself is clean but could do with a lick of paint. The rooms are a bit drab but ok. It was a necessary stop and we would stay again. We had a take away in the evening from the local Chinese take away but it took me a while to find as it is a bit spread out in clearwater. We would have eaten in the restaraunt but it had a German theame and that is not my cup of tea for food. Becareful if you are self driving we got a speeding ticket the next morning because you need to put your foot to the gas to get out onto the highway and we were going down a hill where the police were waiting with a speed gun. Only just going over the speed limit but go a hefty fine non the less. Excellent laundry facilities and i did lots of washing while my little girl was in the pool. The pool and whirlpool complex is very nice indeed.

We stayed here for three nights in Sept.
Our room was large,at the end of the corridor, on the second floor.
It was clean and complete with a useful kitchen. There were two king size beds which proved to be very comfortable.
There is a restaurant on site, but under separate ownership.
We ate there one night and it was O.K.
We also ate at Monroes just down the road (1/2 mile),this was better.
We had already enjoyed two nice breakfasts at the "Old Caboose" and on our last night had our evening meal there, it too was good, on a par with Monroes but slightly cheaper.
Make sure you visit the excellent visitors centre and also the nearby bakery.
Location superb, we would stay here again if in the area.
Oh, and we spotted two bears while we were here.

It has everything tou need for a confortable stopover and a day visit to Wells Gray. Our room was clean, big and quiet.

Nevertheless, no room service is available. We asked for dinner and, after a long wait, we were told to go downstairs to the hotel restaurant to pick our dinner (and pay for it in advance) and we were asked to return the dishes after dinner (nobody was going to pick them up from our room).

Still, the rest worked fine for us and overall is a very good option for a stopover or a visit to Wells Gray Park.

Very large room and kitchenette facilities. Staff very helpful. Nice pool.Location excellent for exploring the beautiful FREE Wells Gray Park. Very limited dining opportunities. If eating in the hotel be advised to book early as seating very limited but good food.

We picked this based on other reviews and were not dissapointed.
Hotel was very clean and tidy, Room spacious with comfy bed, small kitchen, nice balcony.
The Grill Restaurant at the Hotel served good food at reasonable prices, with a Germanic flare.
Has a useful Launderete to catch up on your washing for 1$
