“Siwash Summer Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2013

My family vacationed in Siwash in June of this year—my wife, three daughters (23, 21 and 12) and me. It was on my wife’s bucket list for us to ride horses in the Wild West. Mission accomplished.

As we sadly departed Siwash on our last day, I asked the whole family, “can you give me just one thing that you didn’t like about our vacation?” No one could come up with even a single thing they would change. Neither could I.

It was beyond 5 stars. I can’t even begin to describe to you the different experiences. We stayed in the Caribou suite above the barn. The horses run free during the night, and every morning just after sunrise we would watch from our window as the herd came galloping back for the morning ride. None of our family had ever learned to ride before, but Allyson and her staff are incredible. By the time we left, she had us doing everything on horseback except jumping fences!

Every morning, the staff leaves a carafe of coffee and snacks at your doorstep – and this is before you go to the ranch for an unbelievable breakfast. My wife says I am now spoiled by this “pre-breakfast” ritual that started at Siwash! The whole landscape feels as if you have been transported to another time and another world. Incidentally, a day hike to Crater Lake and the waterfalls is not to be missed. In addition to the rides, we did some skeet shooting with Roy and Barney, a bit of fly fishing for some rainbow trout, and Allyson’s son taught my wife and me how to tie some of our own flies after dinner one evening. On the last day of our vacation, we even rode up on a black bear not 30 yards in front of the trail as he was busy digging in a tree for his lunch. We exchanged greetings and then calmly took a hard left turn down a different trail. Unbelievable experience.

This really is a completely all-inclusive experience. Gabby, the ranch photographer, is always shadowing your activities and, when we departed, she gave us a CD with 100+ pictures of our vacation. That extra service was priceless to the family.

Allyson obsesses over every detail of your vacation—she checks in with you at dinner every evening and confirms plans for the family. The food, the drinks, the horses, the countryside, and the Canadian hospitality are beyond exceptional. My wife and I have been vacationing together for nearly 28 years of our marriage to different parts of the world. Both of us agreed: this was the best ever.

Room Tip: The Caribou Suite is above the barn, so it is close to the ranch for meals. We loved that the horses...

Wow! Soooo impressed! We just returned from a weekend at Siwash Lake Ranch. It wasn't just a weekend.......it was a wonderful adventure packed into two very tight days. Right from the moment we arrived, it was all fantastic! We enjoyed paddling on the lake, appies by the majestic fireplace, amazing meals with local foods (some foraged from the surrounding forests and meadows!), riding, gourmet picnic lunches, fly-fishing lessons, swimming in the creek, hiking, yoga, skeet shooting..... Seriously fantastic! Our 'tent' accommodation was amazing with two rooms, a bathroom with heated floors and a delightful outdoor shower.....made all the better with morning delivery of delicious hot coffee and biscotti. The whole trip was sumptuous! Thank you to our generous warm hosts! Your's and your staff's attention to our every need was most appreciated : )! We will be back!

Room Tip: Facility doesn't have a 'fitness centre' but the whole outdoors is yours to run, ride, h...

The make up of our party was very diverse: a 17 yr old female who's a very competent (English style) rider, a 14 year old male non horsy computer gamer, a non horsy hill walking Dad, and a horsy but wheelchair bound Mum. We ALL had the most fantastic time!

Allyson, her gorgeous family and fantastic staff could not have looked after us any better and a number of firsts we're scored, some very emotional. Watching a non horsy Dad and son come back from a 2.5 hr ride with daughter with huge smiles on their faces was wonderful. Getting back on a horse for the first time since i became disabled was life changing and would not have happened without Allyson's care and the angel that is her horse Soda! We all did fly fishing, clay shooting and all loved it! Every one of us tried at least one new activity, and each of us came away with at least one new thing we'd really enjoyed and intend to pursue now we're home. Massages, yoga, :)

Experienced rider daughter was assigned a fantastic 6 year old horse with spirit and taken on some long and fast rides, and even treated to a Barrel Racing lesson by Jess! Gaming son never mentioned and didnt miss his technology

And the food..... Terrible.... If you're on a diet! Otherwise, truly wonderful, and we're keen foodies! lovely fresh ingredients, beautifully prepared into balanced delicious dishes. Again, lots of ideas that we have borrowed back home! Even the kids tucked into the salads and shocked themselves by enjoying them!

We stayed in the "tents"..... Incredible luxury, beautifully appointed, stunning views... 4 nights just wasn't enough.

I was apprehensive about how wheelchair friendly any ranch could be. I do have some mobility with crutches over short distances and this undoubtedly helped. But the Siwash team could not have been more helpful (eg driving me up and down to the tent), making ramps for me etc.

We were hoping for the experience of a lifetime, and absolutely got it. And we'll be back!

Thank you thank you Allyson and Team Siwash!

Our holiday was fantastic.
We were collected by pick-up from Kamloops Airport and driven for 2.5 hours amid striking scenery to Siwash Ranch, where we were greeted enthusiastically. A late lunch was provided at 2-15pm on arrival.
There is a large range of activities and we were interested particularly in horse riding. Great care was taken in choosing an appropriate horse for the duration of the stay and we were escorted each day by amazing wranglers. They catered for a wide range of riding ability and arranged activity accordingly. Each day, we groomed and tacked our horses and really enjoyed our first taste of western riding. The riding groups were small, four in our case. Once confident in our ability, we were offered the chance to ride unescorted and were taken on faster rides up to cantering pace. I would suggest changing the trail map to make it closer to scale, although one learns the routes quite quickly. The scenery was delightful and we were blessed by fine weather.
In addition, there was easy access to lake activities, skeet shooting, fishing, mountain biking over hilly terrain, hiking, yoga and an informative survival course.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner were provided at fixed but convenient time and the food and British Columbian wines were excellent. A basket of snacks and drinks was provided to each residence before breakfast and soft drinks/cookies/fruit were available freely throughout our stay.
The barn accommodation is conveniently close to the house and saddling area and overlooks the lake. It is idyllic.
The small number of guests facilitated conversation and we enjoyed the ranch house ambience before and after dinner.
Many thanks to everyone at the ranch for a superb holiday.

Our accommodation in our 'tent' took my breath away from the very start and from then, and ten days on, I could not have hoped or wished for more; five star service - food, service, horses, massage, yoga, fishing, shooting, rugby!, tubing, sunshine, sunsets, conversation and fun. Thank you fantastic team/family for all, we'll never forget you. Love from James, Jan, Cal and Alex xxxx

Room Tip: Tents are amazing

Ahhhhh, S"igh"wash! That is how we felt on our trip to this amazing place. My husband and I have been searching for a ranch that would not only give me my full horse immersion experience, but would also offer opportunities for other activities that he could enjoy. Take golf off the table (too resorty) and that leaves fishing, hiking, boating, swimming, and other outdoor related things to do. Siwash offers all that, plus gourmet cooking, massage, yoga, and a chance to stay in a luxurious tent. Certainly I was in heaven as I could ride all day (especially after my body adjusted to the soreness). My husband enjoys riding, but wanted the opportunity to do other things. Allyson made sure that we did everything that we set out to do (well almost all, we chose not to skeet shoot and instead took an afternoon off to just enjoy the beautiful weather from the porch of our tent.)

The website says it all! I even spoke to Allyson prior to booking our date, and just our conversation reassured me that Siwash is the place that we had been searching for. From the moment Barney picked us up at the airport we felt welcomed. The staff was incredible and as I have food allergies, everything that was served to me was made to respect those allergies. Thank you Derek, Kathy and Brianna. The tent experience was amazing! A warm toasty bathroom for those chilly mornings and nights, and how can you beat showering while stargazing! The riding was perfect! I am an experienced rider and respect the fact that you can't always "run" a horse. In fact, control over your horse is the sign of a true rider. Besides, who would want to miss the beautiful scenery? For every ride we took we had our own guide, and we loved learning about each of their backgrounds. We were offered the opportunity to go out by ourselves, but there was no need to, as we loved the company of each of the guides.

On the days that my husband did something different in the afternoon, I was paired with a lovely young adult who was also an experienced rider. We had so much fun!

At night, after dinner, hanging at the ranch house with the other guests, was so lovely. We met some really nice people, mostly from the UK. I loved meeting people from other countries.

I could go on forever about this place and our experience. All in all, it met every expectation that we had. I did yoga every morning, had a massage almost every other day to take care of sore muscles, and rode as much as I wanted to. My husband fished, rode and relaxed (hard for him). Thank you to Allyson, Roy, Jessica, Marshall, and the amazing staff. We hope to return!

Room Tip: The tent experience is the way to go. They are private and have beautiful views. Just be aware that...

We stayed at the ranch for 10 nights and enjoyed every minute of it. The beauty and solace of the place totally detaches you from the outside world. The staff were all so friendly and attentive - nothing was too difficult for them, and everything was done with a smile.

We had mixed riding experience and yet Allyson managed to pick the right horses to match each one of us. My wife had never ridden before and only intended to take a couple of lessons - but she ended up riding every day of our stay and loved every minute of it.

Our daughter, who is an experienced rider - had the opportunity to do more challenging rides and probably covered every trail on the ranch - twice !

We went on a guided hike, I fished in hammer lake with Roy and Marshall (and Barnie) and tried my hand at skeet shooting - all of which were exhilarating.

The knowledge of the guides and wranglers was impressive to say the least - and they seemed to understand the ability of every rider to ensure that we stayed within our limitations. This goes a long way to making the experience enjoyable for all of us.

There were a few families at the ranch during our stay and the youngsters all seemed to be having such a great time between horse riding, swimming & kayaking in the lake, playing touch rugby, boules, roasting marshmallows, and mega games of pictionary - it was difficult to get them to bed at night.

We stayed in one of the canvas cabins - luxury at it's finest. The location and tranquility is breathtaking - not to mention hot coffee delivered every morning for the perfect start to our day.

The quality of the food was as good as we have experienced anywhere in the world - and was always more than we could eat.

There are two things that make a holiday great - the place and the people, and we were lucky to have both at Siwash.

Allyson, Roy, Marshall, and Jesse are the perfect hosts and we will certainly be back.
