This restaurant does use various promotions to attract diners and seems to be very successful ... however, they seem to run into difficulty finding seating for all their diners when it is busy ..., two weeks in a row, we have seen people arrive and find that there is a wait for tables and then leave without being seated.

We did have a booking and were seated and the waitress was very fast off the mark ... wanting to take our orders before we had even been presented with the menu. We had vouchers which allowed a starter plus mains or mains plus dessert and between six of us, had two starters, six mains and four desserts ... somehow, the Buffalo chicken main got converted into a Buffalo Wing starter and this meant a delay getting our mains and a half inquisition as to why it was wrong (and definitely not our fault).

Once this was sorted, we tucked into the starters which were both calamari and very good.

Mains were four Angus rump steaks, the said Buffalo chicken and a rack of plum/hickory flavoured spare ribs. The outstanding dish was the chicken which was succulent and tasty ... the steaks were correctly cooked but the cut of meat in all four instances was very sinewy and difficult to cut, even using steak knives ... the pepper mushroom sauce also seemed to have too much pepper. The spare ribs were okay.

We chose either cheesecake or crème brule and both were better than average.

We found the dining experience to be akin to pub food rather than fine dining and as you will note, some of the dishes were good and others were average or even below average.

Not one to bother to write reviews unless exceptionally good or appallingly bad experiences force my hand. This restaurant falls into the latter. There are really no words. We had a GRABONE voucher DO NOT BOTHER if you see this deal. There is no value for money here. Because it is deal, they scrimp on the meals to the point of the ridiculous. I ordered tiger prawns, six miniature shrimps were served with a tablespoon of salad. ($16 normally ).Two of our group ordered buffalo wings. Again the smallest chickens you could imagine(probably from Lilliput), were used, and more of the stingy serving of salad. It may have had a redeeming factor with flavour, but alas no. Bland badly cooked rubbish. The Ribs, two meals both disgusting. Looked big, but all bone no meat, certainly no hoisin or smokey whatever and definitely not slow cooked, tough. Also used old meat, very nearly on the turn. Steaks, supposed to 300gm sirloin. Lucky if it was 200gm cooked ok but sinewy. Half a handful of chips, bacon and mushroom sauce consisted of 3 tiny slices of mushroom, 3 tiny bits of bacon, and onion skin (because thats what it tasted like) all fried together until it resembled a sauce of sorts. Really really bad. The best bit is the 'salad', a tablespoon of shredded carrot. No lettuce, tomato or anything else. I looked across at other diners who I assumed were not 'Grabones' and saw a half decent salad on their plates. Well up to dessert and by now my son is looking on Tripadvisor. Should have done this before we brought the voucher. Everything other diners had experienced, we were and more. The dessert, well it was almost ok, apart from the very old brought in 'tarts' and the almost off cheesecake. I guess they tried to present them a bit better with slices of orange but as with everything else they were disgusting.

My son is a chef and he runs Grabone deals as well. He would never think of serving food like this or even scrimping. People buy these deals in good faith and expect to have at least decent food with a reasonable quantity. He also never complains if he dines out, and warns us not to as well if he is with us, as he knows how hard it can be in the kitchen. However, this time was different, he told the maitre'd the Asian chefs need sacking, because the food served to us should never have left the kitchen.

The only reason they have received one star was because the service was great and the maitre'd although very embarrassed could not do anything. The chefs were obviously used to complaints and completely ignored everything. If we didn't have a voucher, I would have refused to pay for that meal, the first time ever. I cannot believe in the heart of Takapuna, next to a swanky hotel, that this establishment exits and continues to trade. I am contacting Grabone to let them know my concerns, because they should not be promoting this restaurant.

As another stated AVOID! AVOID!AVOID!
