Stayed for 3 weeks on 11. floor with excellent city view to Auckland. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. The hotel has a well equiped gym and a terrific outdoor heated pool and spa. The room was comfortable and kitchen had all appliances needed. The breakfast bufe was average, as there was little or no change in the selection during the 3 weeks. I recommend this hotel.

I stayed at the Spencer on Byron for two nights on business travel. The lobby, restaurant and meeting rooms are very nice; the restaurant is not exactly cheap but it's a pretty good and convenient way to go. Anyway, there are a large number of eateries within a few minutes walk, or drive on down to Devonport for a great selection of boutique cafes and restaurants in a terrific sea-side location.

The hotel room was a bit of a disappointment. The decor is dated, and the layout odd due to the shape of the building (hexagonal?). The en-suite (the room's only bathroom) came off the bedroom at the head end; the bed was generous in size but this meant that the bed-side drawers blocked half the doorway into the en-suite! Poor design, only barely compensated for by the fact it is a sliding door. I am not exactly the fit, slender young thing I once was; any more of me and it would have been a problem.

The room was clean and serviceable, but I wouldn't call it four star any more. Needs a good spruce up or preferably a total refit.

The view from my room (eleventh floor) was terrific - I was on the city side so got harbour and city views. Auckland has excellent views available so ask for them!

Very convenient for work on the North Shore of Auckland - don't tackle the harbour bridge in peak time without lots of thought - it is a major choke point. If you are working on the Shore, stay somewhere like this; if you are working city or south, stay that side of the bridge.

Staff are friendly and helpful, car-parking is available on the premises and the room has all the usual hotel features in a functional way.

Room rates are pretty good value; internet is not overly expensive but certainly not cheap. I'd stay there again if work was paying.

Room Tip: Ask for a city or harbour view. Well worth the look at the nightscape if you're in a higher floor!

Went here with friends to catch up for a drink and we decided (group of four) to stay for dinner. The bar and restaurant is on the second level and accessed from the lobby via their own stairs. It is quite typical of contemporary design in such hotels but not madly awe-inspiring. The bar had a good selection of local wines although they don't come cheap. The restaurant is an open plan one and offered reasonable food and choice without anything really show-stopping. Good service.

Staff were great, friendly and attentive but the rooms were a big let down. My work paid $170 nz a night for a studio room, the shower head was broken and sprayed out from all the wrong places, the bathroom cabinetry was damaged and appeared to have been for quite some time. The room was cold and the bedding too short to pull up comfortably, there was an unknown white substance on the curtain near the bed and the label off someones underpants stuck to the bed head. If I or work had paid closer to $100- $120 I would have been reasonably happy with the quality but for $170 I was expecting something much better.

Room Tip: Request a room harbourside for great views of the city or seaside for views of the beach.

I have been staying at the Spencer regularly over the past 4 years and note that this property is not what it used to be, plug sockets did not work, housekeeping did not clean the vanity unit in the bathroom or replace used toiletries. Service in the bar was slow and impersonal. This property needs to focus on improving their service if they want to claim 4 star +
