Takapuna Beach Holiday Park
Reviewed May 22, 2010

We live in Auckland and thought it would be good to experience another part of our fantastic city. We sort of wish we had stayed at home or in a hotel.

The location is great, right on the beach. Close to the shops cafes, bars and the sunday markets.

We booked a powered tent site for a large tent, which we did not get. The men that run it were very arrogant and although there were alot of free sites they had a problem with our car being slightly outside our site even though there were no markings. (our tent and small car couldn't fit onto the site)

I think this would suit travelers with their own campervans. The bathroom facilities are dated and not kept clean. with spider webs everywhere it was not a good experience.

We stayed the weekend that there was a tsunami warning and we were shocked to find out as there was absolutely no note up on the office windows or anywhere in the camp ground. we were not told when walking in from being at the markets at around the time it should be hitting. (We were told by a worried friend phoning to warn us about it)
This is total disregard for their guests safety as we were only 20 odd metres from the beach. I know the tsunami didn't come to anything but these things DO take lives and should be taken seriously or at least given us the choice to stay or go.

We spent every 2nd weekend camping at different campsites over the NZ summer and found this to be the most expensive and definitely not one we would return to.

If your staying in Auckland you could do a lot worse than here. It's got great little caravans for good rates with full cooking facilities. The shared facilities are adequate and clean. The beach setting is gorgeous. There are a number of good bars and restaurants around 5 mins away.

Having read tripadvisor forums in advance of our visit, a couple of people had mentioned here as a good location, which on the positive, it is - opposite beach, rockpools, good cafe/bistro and a few minutes walk into town. At that time there were no reviews.

We booked an ensuite caravan as none of the other facilities had any ensuite potential at all, and with 2 6yr olds, we felt in-house bath/shower toilet facilities were required.

On arrival we couldn't believe our eyes and at £130pn were very disappointed. Essentially an ancient 4 berth caravan with toilet (chemical loo that you had to turn a handle to open the loo and then another handle to swish some water around) - obviously this was a very smelly part of the caravan. 40 yrs old at least with old carpet, ancient curtains and fittings - crockery, plates etc old and dusty.

Shared toilet and shower blocks - very basic. I am blind without glasses or contacts and my son took great delight in advising the size and number of spiders on the window of our shower cubicle (fortunately they wern't seen by me) - needs investment to bring up to good standard.

There is definately better out there (Emerald Inn next door looked amazing with same access to beach etc) - not recommended unless all you need is a park for your camper van or your happy with very basic accommodation and facilities and don't mind cleaning before you step inside!

Recommend you stay in Devonport itself to avoid the 20 minute bus ride to Devonport or the Ferry - it all mounts up after a few days. Fab beach there, great facilities for kids and much more happening plus its a walk to the ferry terminal and access to Auckland itself.
