Fireweed Hostel

We stayed for just one night and it was great. The common room and the patio had a nice view, with minimal highway noise. The bathrooms were oddly planned (seperate for toilet and shower). The night life is nonexistant, the bar across the street closes at around 6pm. The fridge also had lots of condiments and the rooms were quiet and clean. It is right next to the train tracks, the 3am train is a little noisy. Other than those (really trivial) problems, it is a great place to stay!

Room Tip: the burgess room, is the closest to the tracks. Won't choose that one next time

I made a last minute decision to drive through Revelstoke and continue up to Yoho National Park, and I'm glad that I did; scoring the last available bed in a 4 bed dorm. After I was given a tour of the hostel I immediately booked an second night.

The kitchen / dining / lounge were all immaculate with modern amenities. The bathrooms & showers were the best part being private and spotlessly clean. The host (Chris) was very nice and gave great advice on hikes and things to do in the area, listing out a number of options for the day and suggesting what might be the best with the time I had available. I was also warned over the phone when booking that there wasn't much in the way of shops in the area so fortunately I came well stocked with food.

The space between beds is a tad small and as noted you do get a bit of train noise during the night. But staying in this hostel was the most relaxed I felt in Canada and not really an issue at all. They also charged me a lower rate than what was on their website ($30 p/n, vs $40 advertised). In all honesty I would have paid double that without batting an eyelid.

Would highly recommend it - a beautiful hostel in a beautiful national park. A little bit of train noise every now and then is hardly an issue. It's still significantly quieter than any other hostel I stayed in, in Canada.

The hostel overall was very nice - really new interior which is being kept clean by staff and guests.

The communal areas were spacious and fitted out with what you'd need for a stay. The bedrooms and bathrooms however seemed poorly thought out in terms of layout. We booked a "private" room on an external website, not directly through Fireweed, and it wasn't clear that we were effectively booking a dorm room so had 5 beds crammed into the room. The Fireweed website does make this clear but just a gentle warning to anybody not booking direct with them. For 1 night, it was ok but any longer and the size of the room would have been a problem.

For what we got, the room was overpriced in comparison to other places we stayed in the Rockies.

Location was good for Yoho National Park but Field really is lacking in provisions. Make sure you stock up on provisions before arriving in Field.

Two friends and I stayed here in August and couldn't have been treated better. Craig is a great host and went out of his way to ensure that our stay was pleasant and comfortable, even moving our luggage, cooler and groceries himself (while we were out hiking) when we had to change locations at the hostel. The downstairs suite is clean, bright, and comfortable, and we would not hesitate to stay there again. It is definitely above and beyond what one would expect from a hostel!

This hostel is fantastic. It is extremely clean and has the best kitchen I have ever seen in a hostel.

Pros:
The kitchen had everything. Even things like plastic wrap.
The rooms are clean.
The owner is very helpful.
Location is good for Yoho park and also Lake Louise.
Prices are good and dont require membership cards.
You can bring your own alcohol ect (not typical in other hostels like HI).

Cons:
Located along the train tracks that are very active so you get alot of noise.
The wifi signal is not good for skype calls. (this is all of the town of Field because the system is via satellite.) It is fine for email ect (albeit slow).
The dorm beds have very little room between the beds.

Things to know before:
Field only has one restaurant opened for all three meals (until 9PM). It is good but expensive. Stop in Jasper, Banff, Canmore, or Golden to get enough food to cook for your entire stay.
Gas is very expensive as well.
The town is tiny so dont expect a night life.

My husband and I spent time in both the Rockies and BC/Vancouver Island, and both are in firm agreement that our five nights in Field were the best (we extended our stay, we loved it so much!). The hostel is beautiful and well designed. It is more expensive than other hostels, but it is well worth the money. Everything is spotless, the lounge/kitchen area is a great place to chill out and meet other people. The owner was fantastic, interested in what you were up to and gave great tips about what to do in the area.
FIeld itself is a small village, with not a lot going on, but that makes not a lot of difference if you are in a lively hostel with a social area. Overall, fantastic.

I believe that the owner must put many thoughts when designing the hostel. It is very considerate to make it simple and economic while in the meantime secure, convenient and comfortable. As lots wrote, this is very likely one of the best hostel in the country. Everything is neat, clean and well-managed. There might be only one issue: with such a convenient location in a popular National Park, the place can hardly avoid the noise of trafic passing along highway and railway. But it is minor and overall it is a wonderful place to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed at the two-bedroom private suite. Very nice and impressive. If you go with family or a few...
