“Enjoyed our Stay”
Reviewed August 6, 2009

We stayed 4 nights wanting take in some of the local sights and do a little exploring in the area. Having 2 children and a modest budget, we needed a place large enough to accommodate our family that was also affordable. A room with a double bed with two singles was within our budget. The room, and the lodge, was modest and somewhat aged but clean and well maintained.

The staff was very friendly and helpful and suggested we visit Lake O’Hara for hiking which turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! We were simply blown away by the awesome scenery and variety of trails. If you haven’t been there you simply must go. It’s pretty close by which is also nice. We also took a ride on the sightseeing gondola at Lake Louise which is another great thing to do if you’re in the area. The view from the top is spectacular, and we even saw a mother grizzly bear with 2 cubs!

We ate in the dining room several times which was quite good. The kids liked the pool and the sauna did its job.

Overall our experience at West Louise Lodge was enjoyable.

This place is terrible. The room was dirty, the bathroom was disgusting, and the fixtures in the bath not working properly. We were tired from a long backpack trip and decided to "treat" ourselves to a hotel night and didn't have the energy to drive any farther, so we got a room for the night at West Louise. What a mistake.

Sleep in your car, it's better and you'll save some money. If we'd paid $20 for the room we had, we'd have felt ripped off.

Do yourself and your family a favour and don't even think about staying here! If you do, you will find out how dirty, dingy and delapidated this hotel is. The pool had water, but I wouldn't swim in it - as a matter of fact, the tub in the bathroom had not been cleaned in who knows when and wasn't fit to use either. Filthy carpets and I noticed a mouse run under one of the couches in the lobby. Health issues aside, there is no air conditioning, and even with fans the room was like an oven. We pre-booked this hotel much to our regret and stayed only one night as we were too tired to move on, but I noticed the hotel still managed to fill the place (!) with last minute walk-ins, with some people who were turned away sleeping outside in their cars. If you were one of those people, consider yourself lucky - you probably slept in a much cleaner, cooler, and more comfortable evironment than the hotel!

They had places to rent at peak season, but they don't have internet, no phones, and at times there was no cell connection.... it's dumpy, but for the relatively low price, it was expected and suitable, since it's just a place to crash till morning. Also, it is just inside the BC border so you get stuck with the BC provincial tax, which you don't get if you stay several miles east, actually inside Alberta.

However, the biggest disappointment was the way they scammed us out of the complementary breakfast - advertising there was one online, and then saying it was no longer available once we checked in... it had made the difference in us staying there as opposed to another dive...

So on the final day after 5 nights, my son noticed it was also advertised in fine print on an inroom menu which we hadn't looked at till then, so we went o check on it, and they said, that if people bring this to their attention, then they'd let them have the breakfast in the restaurant without charge... so basically - they advertise breakfast is included, but tell you it's not after you check in, but if you push them on it by showing that it's printed on the in-room menu, then you'll get it... management is shifty!

  • Liked — cheap and central to great hiking areas
  • Disliked — sleazy management

We had recently completed a stay at Moraine Lake Lodge, then stayed a while in Banff and then moved on to other accommodation in the Rockies. Well, that last accommodation was an absolute disaster and whilst we booked it for 4 nights, we ended up staying only 2. After the first night we searched for accommodation all of which was scarce and if available very expensive.

We happened to be hiking in Yoho on that day and out of desperation we went into West Louise Lodge to look at the rooms on our way back to our questionable accommodation. My partner reviewed the rooms and gave the thumbs up. It was good enough.

I had recalled a few negative reviews on trip advisor so I was not expecting much.

We stayed for 2 nights.

The staff were great to have a chat with, the breakfast was included in the price, it was cheap for the area and the clothes washing facilities were reallly good.

The central location (to the national parks that is) is AWESOME. There is nothing else around in the immediate vicinity other than fuel. When returning to the Rockies we will stay here most of the time for its value for money.

We got stuck out late one night after taking a long hike late in the day. Tired, we settled for grabbing a meal at the lodge's restaurant. The restaurant and menu did not inspire any positive expectations and I was almost sick just at the thought of eating there. Not suggesting that the restaurant was in any way dirty or otherwise unappealing, it was just on the basis of past experiences in similar places - its just not my palate. I was pleasantly surprised! The very basic meals were fortunately very very well done and we would have eaten there regularly for good value tasty meals if we were to have stayed longer.

I recall that one night there was some inexplicable noise deep into the night (can't remember now what it was but suspect it may ave been a noisy lift). When this occurred I was thinking "here we go, I knew this was too good to be true". I don't recall now how it was resolved at the time. In the morning we advised the staff and we moved rooms. The next night there was no such noise. For the price, we didn't mind the inconvenience.

I also recall that you could hear the highway traffic. It was low enough though not to be intrusive enough to disturb your sleep, but some sensitive people may be disturbed. You could always opt for a room to the rear of the building.

We recommend it for the traveller, provided you can deal with a few little inconveniences.

  • Liked — Value for money and proximity to regional attractions.
  • Disliked — The noise in the night was disappointing when it occurred in our first room.

Walked in last minute and got a room for $125cdn a night, thought it was good considering it was in the middle of peak season labor day long weekend. The room reminded of the ones you see in the tv show "My Name is Earl" the place is minimally kept, all patch works and band-aid fixes. Lights flicker, water sputters. The restaurant food came cold and was edible after they nuked it hot. Breakfast was included which wasn't too bad, just toasts, bagels, whole fruits, yogurts, tea, coffee, juice. The rooms were super noisy, you can hear EVERYTHING, from people walking around, to highway traffic. If it wasn't for the fact the sheets were clean, and bathroom clean also (just not well kept) we would have just slept in the car instead.

  • Liked — breakfast was included at least.
  • Disliked — Noise, poorly kept, did not feel very comfortable

We booked a suite with two queen beds. The room layout was good with the beds in a loft upstairs - Allowed us to put the kids to bed and still have an evening. The carpets were old and dirty. The window screen was taped to keep out the bugs. The fireplace was out of order. The room had no air conditioning - only two oscilating fans. Even with the window open, the loft was uncomfortably hot at night. The great breakfast described in an earlier review has been replaced with a modest continental. Most disappointing of all was the fact that we booked hotels with pools for the kids to enjoy. When we arrived, we discovered the pool was empty and had been closed all season. There was no mention of this upon booking. Overall this was the both the most expensive and the worst accomodation of our trip. The price may be cheap for the area, but even at that its still not worth it.
