“A great weekend away in Emerald Lake”
Reviewed March 4, 2013

As always, it was amazing to get out to Emerald Lake. It's a beautiful place to stay with good food and good service. A couple of things:
1) Book on expedia vs. with the resort as we saved about $35/night that way. There's no cancellation that way but we didn't care about that
2) Try snowshoeing. They have some scenic trails that are pretty easy to walk on as they are all flattened down. for $20/day it was excellent.
3) Make time for the hot tub. Again, great views and a good way to relax after show shoeing!

The last time I was at Emerald Lake was about 9 years ago and I was hoping to come back to the same wonderful lodge I experienced back then, but when I got there last weekend I was sadly disappointed.

Emerald Lake Lodge has lost what made it so special. The service at the lounge in the main lodge was horrible where we had to wait over 30 minutes to even get a drink menu. I eventually got up and went to the bar to order the overpriced drinks. Our meal which was the monk fish and chicken dish was probably the worst meal I've ever had at a "high end" resort. If you go, don't order either one of these dishes. The chicken swims in an oily broth type soup and the monk fish is a fatty garbage fish best not served at all. We were also served cold hard buns which looked like leftovers from the day before. Granted the lodge was pretty busy, and you can see that they were definitely shorted staffed.

We also had breakfast the following day and paid handsomely for eggs and bacon that took over 40 minutes to arrive from the kitchen. The do serve a buffet for $19 per person, but if you decide to do al la carte, prepare to wait. Our final meal at the lodge was in their "reservations only" dining room and we had the lam and ribeye. Both meals were very tasty and hot. Definitely an improvement from the night before, however we were one of the first people seated that evening. Further along in the evening we started to see meals coming out cold and having to be sent back. I think the whole place is understaffed and can't keep up with all the guests.

As for the accommodations, our room was 204 in building 20. We overlooked the pond area behind the main lodge. We liked being close to the main lodge but felt we were too far away from the hot tub to enjoy it so we never went. Like the main lodge, our room / building is in desperate need for a renovation. 9 years ago, the rooms had the same carpet! Yuck! We found the room to be really dirty. The carpet is worn and filthy, and the bathroom floor was gritty and actually had a blood stain on it right beside the tub. Everything screamed old!!! It’s time for the lodge to sink some money into the place and upgrade everything. Even the main lodge is looking tired and dirty. The pool table on the second floor is so dirty; you can’t even play a decent game on it. The table needs to be re-felted and levelled out.

I will still come to Emerald Lake but I may stay somewhere else. The lake and the mountains are still gorgeous and I love all the hiking trails nearby. But of the amount of money you spend staying at the lodge, it’s just not worth it anymore.

Room Tip: Ask for a room closer to the hot tub but also close to the main lodge.

Take your time if driving to Emerald Lake and explore the area. Field has some good restaurants and old heritage buildings. Stop at the natural bridge, on the road into Emerald Lake, and walk a few steps from your car and see gorgeous rocks/water clear and green/and water falls-frozen at this time of year. Continue down the road and park in the designated area and courteous staff load your luggage and take you up to the lodge per bus. We went for the weekend, and I had booked a room with a queen bed/fireplace in the lodge.I was surprised that we were in one of the cabins upper floor overlooking the lake. The fireplace was set up with wood and ready to go. A minor point would be the carpet and some of the wood furniture in the room have seen better days. The shower was hot, the bed very comfortable. In the lodge are a lounge area and the formal dining room downstairs. Upstairs the pool table. Food was excellent. Service a bit harried as they were very busy with weddings and lots of people. The staff were friendly and very courteous. We went showshoeing Saturday, and many were out to walk(good paths for that), cross country skiing- good trails to chose from, well groomed. You can rent skiis/shoes at the little cabin on the lake by the parking lot. It was peaceful and quiet in our room. Very relaxing stay. They also allow pets as we saw 3 big dogs enjoying the ambiance as well. It isn't inexpensive but you are paying for the chance to stay in a secluded pristine area, with all the amenities of a 4 star hotel. ( we did not use the hot tub, but it was always busy)

Some close friends and I recently stayed at Emerald Lake Lodge and I can honestly say it was an incredible experience. It’s always nice to escape the city for some fun in the mountains but I had no idea how cool this place actually is. After parking the car in a tucked away lot we were greeted by a smiling shuttle driver who took us across the lake to the main lodge as cars are not permitted to do so. Once checked in their team quickly delivered all of our bags to our rooms while we took in the views. This place is nestled alongside Emerald Lake surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges. I was amazed to see so many people enjoying cross-country skiing and snow shoeing across the snowy frozen lake. Love the rooms, mostly the wood burning fireplace and that it was remarkably clean. Off to the hot tub, which was easily the biggest hot tub I’ve ever sat in. Or should I say swam in. Next was dinner at Mount Burgess Dining room. Food was excellent and the service was decent. After dinner and drinks the night got a little hazy but I do recall being amazed at the full size snooker table! All in all it was a great weekend away. The scenery is truly amazing and if you’re into great escapes, this is the place.

We just got home from our wedding at Emerald Lake Lodge and it was perfect! Not a single complaint. Every single staff member we dealt with during our stay went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed and that our stay and that of all of our guests was a great one. When we arrived and were told that we were being upgraded to the point cabin for the duration of our stay I almost cried!! The food, rooms and service were all excellent. A special thanks to the wait staff that dug through the trash to retrieve my retainer!! It was the perfect location for a winter wonderland wedding and I can't wait to return for our one year anniversary!!

We stayed one night here and it was absolutely stunning location and so peaceful. The rooms were lovely. We had a meal there and it was lovely. There is a games room with a full size snooker table where the kids can go & play. Definately worth a visit.

Excellent location and great restaurant with good food. The rooms are in desperate need of refurbishment seeming tired and outdated, noisy heating system, cheap shower, old carpet, slow drainage of water. Staff is unprofessional. Given the very expensive rates Emerald Lodge charges, their staff should reflect that and they should be offering services with much higher standards. We had an incident one night at dinner at the Mount Burgess Dining Room when 4 obviously very drunk and very loud guests were allowed to stay and disturb everyone elses quiet evening. The waitress apologized but told us that they can't ask the drunk guests to leave since they have been coming there once a year for a number of years. We have also been their guests for a number of years, so was it ok then for us to suffer? Nobody form the restaurant's management seemed to care. In such an uniq place the smelly and noisy diesel engin busses should be replaced with electric ones; see Zermatt in Switzerland.
