After our flights were delayed 3 hours, we finally arrived at the kaulbach House at 9:30 PM on a Friday night. We were met at the door by our host, David, who graciously helped getting the luggage up to the 3rd floor Bluenose suite. David pointed us to the only restaurant in Lunenburg that was still open and we had dinner before retiring. We stayed for 3 nights.

Breakfasts were enjoyable with good food and good company. David and Jennie were very helpful with suggestions on things to do and see. David provided much information on the local history and steered us in the right direction to see things known to the locals.

The room was very comfortable. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: The Bluenose Suite on the top floor can be warm in a heat wave.

Our visit to Lunenburg was greatly enhanced by staying at this Inn. David provided recommendations for dining, strolling, and interesting sites in Lunenburg plus a route with must-see stops for the next day! Breakfast was great. Both the common areas and the two rooms we saw were well decorated and comfy. The rooms were adequate size, with much appreciated desks. The small en-suite facilities were a bit of a challenge for two, as some reviews have mentioned, but quite workable.

Room Tip: We had both Dockside and Ruby rooms, which are on the second floor. The Dockside views were particu...

We recently spent 8 nights in Lunenberg at Kaulbach House. We were initially to get to Lunenberg about 6PM. Due to airline problems we were late arriving at about 11:30PM on a very foggy, rainy night, David was graciously waiting up for us to check us in.

David and Jennie are the most gracious, friendly hosts ever. We felt like family.

The breakfast prepared by Jennie each AM was wonderful, served about 8:30 AM.

David was especially helpful telling us places to see, etc.

On the day we left to get to the Halifax airport, Jennie got up early to prepare a breakfast for us.

Highly recommend to any one.

After finding digs in most of Nova scotia for about $99 to $110, I was more than taken aback to find the least expensive room here was $139. That was up two flights of steep narrow stairs, and quite small.

But the very British hosts were charming and effusive- full of good ideas and pleasant banter. Breakfast was convivial and extended, with people laughing at all tables.

And Kaulbach House has what is called 'architectural merit', as a listed heritage building. Unfortunately, David and Jenny (the proprietors), are being squeezed by age and stupid regulations, and in fact are closing off a couple of rooms to fit into a different category. I find this kind of nonsense so disturbing- any one can see what a great job they are doing- but they can tell you the whole tale once you get there.

And please do- they deserve to be supported. Oh, yes- a final thing- I forgot to pay, and far from sending the Federales after me, they simply put a note on our car, which we had left for the day in their car park.

When I apologized profusely, they said not to worry- they were sure it would have all worked out in any case.... lovely people, lovely place.

Thank you for staying at Kaulbach House and for your positive comments. I'm sorry you felt that your room rate did not offer good value for money. Apart from the Bluenose Suite (not the room in question), which occupies the whole of the attic floor, all of our rooms are on the second floor, so just one flight up the main staircase.
The real concern with this review is the comments made in the third paragraph. We are not being 'squeezed by age and stupid regulations'. I cannot imagine where these ideas were gleaned unless you misheard something that was said in your presence. For personal reasons we have had to make the difficult decision to operate only four of our six rooms this year. Arthritis is making the practical running of the inn difficult for me and rather than risk a lowering of standards, we have decided, for now, to operate the business on a smaller scale. This is the only reason for the change, one which is perfectly simple to reverse.

The common areas at the inn are lovely. It's a beautiful property. The Land & Sea room was charming, but not very spacious. Inside, there is a small room with a toilet and stand-up shower, and the sink is located just outside of this, in the main room with the two single beds. It's a tight space, and you have to be careful opening the bathroom door when someone is at the sink. Also, it can be a bit tricky when two people are needing the sink to get ready for bed or to go out. We had visited in the summer, and I am happy the A/C unit in the window worked so well. It cooled the room down quickly.

The innkeepers were absolutely wonderful - very friendly and helpful. It was a pleasure chatting with them. The breakfast was perfect, and exactly what I needed to start the day off right. And the coffee was a pleasant surprise - it was by far the best either of us have ever had at an inn. (One cup was not enough.)

Overall, we had a wonderful experience, and I would definitely stay here again. (In fact, I look forward to it.)

We stayed two nights at Kaulback House in the Bluenose Suite. Beautifully appointed room on the top floor with view of the harbor. Private outdoor entrance made for easy access. Great breakfast served at our table in a delightfully furnished dining room. The owners were so interested in our stay and made several great suggestions for restaurants and sight seeing. Gracious hosts and beautifully restored home. I highly reccommend this B&B.

Room Tip: The Bluenose Suite is quiet, unique with a good view of the harbor and nearby streets.

We stayed in this charming and wonderful B&B this past August. David and Jenny were very welcoming, helpful, and gracious hosts. The breakfast was generous and delicious. We found David to be most courteous with the transporting of our luggage, as well as helpful with local information.
