“Fantastic family resort”
Reviewed July 10, 2010

My mom and I chose this place for it's well known enduring reputation in Muskoka. Although we are older adults, and the resort is geared to families, we found it to be a very enjoyable 4 day get a way. Accommodations were in a cabin like environment, with a living room, bedroom and huge deck overlooking the water. The landscaping and layout are beautiful. Meals are included in a huge and pleasant dining room. Although there were over 400 people there, mostly families with kids under 8, there are so many activities going on in a secluded kids area, that you never felt there was a crowd anywhere. Food service was very nice, and staff friendly and helpful. This property dates back to 1869 so has no new luxuries about it, but it is a true Northern Ontario - Muskoka experience.

We stayed at CH July 1st long weekend for 4 nights. Had a good time, great weather. But boy what a rip off! For the price we paid I could have taken my family for a full week in Mexico, and twice to Wonderland.

This was our 2nd trip to Clevelands House, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The location and amenities at the resort are wonderful. There is a small beach area, which never seems crowded, a gorgeous pool (and another shallow one for small kids nearby), a good selection of water activities (boats, kayaks, canoes...), and a scenic area to explore by water or by foot. The resort is well spaced out with lots of little paths leading around the resort, all beautifully landscaped with many relaxing seating areas interspersed around the grounds.
The food is delicious, and the menu varied. However, this year I was disappointed with the children's menu items - the previous year the resort had been more open to varying the adult menu to accomodate the kids. My 8 year old daughter had trouble finding something she liked on a couple of occasions. Same with the Children's daycamp councillors - I found they were more motivated with the kids the previous year. This year they sometimes changed the daily schedule of events (which - if they'd stayed with it, was fabulously well organized, kids being able to choose a sports schedule or a more crafty-focussed schedule).

There are some evening programs offered, although we were always happy to walk around the grounds and explore. They offer family events such as trivia and scavenger hunts, even a fishing derby at the dock!

We usually stay in a 2 bedroom cottage, which is located near the beach. The cottages are clean and in many the mattresses have been replaced, although the furniture is typical 'cottage' style - older wood. Everything works though, and when we needed a new light bulb it was delivered in less than 10 minutes! Cottages have a mini-fridge and a microwave, and our unit had 2 bathrooms in it, 1 with a bath/shower.

We will no doubt return to Clevelands House again in 2010. We always have a relaxing time, and there's lots for the kids to do.

Cottages are old and run down, not taken care of at all. Our cottage had ripped wallpaper and dirty pillows that we had to call the front desk for.
The food was below average. Bad presentation and very mediocre.
The grounds of the resort have been neglected for many years by the look of it.
My husband and I came here for our honeymoon. I had been to Clevelands House many times as a chile and teen. My grandparents actually had their honeymoon there, which is one of the reasons we thought it would be specail to go. Dissapointment is not the word. We spent a lot of money, and this resort is not even close to what they charge.
Will not be returning!!!

You do not go to Cleveland House for the rooms. They are out of date, shabby without the chic, but quite clean. most of the facilities on the property can be described as antiquated. You can ask for certain room numbers when booking, I would advise to ask to not have room 111, there is a drive through car port directly below the room. Much of the sports equipment seems to be stored there and it is VERY loud at night as people walk through the car port and early in the am as the staff takes out the equipment.

The food is good, the golf all right, the pools and spa also fall in the okay range, the staff is nice, all very acceptable... The stand out, what makes this place special and the reason we will return is the great kids program and the fun family activities. My older son has autism and when I told that to the kids camp staff they offered to have a special counselor just for him. They give a printed plan of the days varied activities in case you need to pick up your child during the day. The kids are kept quite wonderfully and happily busy the whole day (a dream for all parents).

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. There are just too many things that are wrong with it. For the kind of money we paid, I fully expected more out of this place. Next year, we plan on paying more to stay somewhere that has better food with clean rooms.

First the good: Outside surroundings including grass was well kept. Tennis courts were well kept and clean. I suspect that’s probably their biggest draw in their heyday. Pools were not bad.

What was not good at all: The food was bad no matter which way you look at it. They had cream sauce items on every lunch and dinner menu. And I am not sure why? The breakfast was the only good meal of the day. My five kids, husband and I all fell sick the day we got home after the trip.
The rooms need to be refurbished, including changing of carpets. Light fixtures were old and had missing bulbs. When we arrived in our room there were dirty garbage bins that had not been cleaned out. All the lawn chairs were dirty and/or stained and most of them were broken around the pool. The roof on these cottages/houses needs to be changed-they are in a dilapidated state. High-speed internet worked sometimes and other times did not work at all. Overall, the staff was not bad and very helpful. However, I was pleasantly surprised that many of them (on their breaks) were allowed to drink beer/alcohol openly on the beach and other areas of the hotel.

The only that I did like was the kids programs - very good counsellors and programs for all ages of kids - actually pretty impressive. Normally, I could live with outdated rooms and poor food, but not when I am paying such high prices. I think that its time that Clevelands House stop resting on its laurels and start providing their guests with some real value. Update the rooms and provide half decent food - doens't have to be gourmet, but should be better than high school cafeteria food.
