“A muskoka jewel that has lost its lustre”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2013

Upon arrival I could not believe the appalling condition. Tarps over roofs that obviously have been leaking. A general state of disrepair evident everywhere. Wood rot and paint peeling on the balconies and decks.

But the worst was yet to come. The restaurant has been converted and all meals are a la carte. The problem is that the service is abyssmal! The front house staff are
poorly trained and frankly don't know what they are doing.Waiting an average of 30 minutes to have a server acknowledge your presence after being seated and eventually getting your meal only to find that is cold because the staff could not figure out which table to bring it to. There was not a single meal where something did not get messed up. Several meals never came with those of the other diners and came as much as 45 minutes after everyone else had already eaten. On 2 occasions diners left without being served.

We were told that there are plans to improve the property and the management understands what needs to be done. Only time will tell and that is no assistance to people planning to go there this season.

Save your money (it is not cheap to stay here even with the problems!) and go somewhere where your biggest worry is the weather not the facilities and service that you have already paid dearly. In its current state, it is simply not worthwhile, even though it is a majestic setting.

The setting is amazing and this could be a place for a family vacation that could draw from all over Canada and the US..a family friendly alternative to the JW Marriott up the hill. It is too bad that there isn't the most basic maintenance or cleaning done. Upon our arrival in our room there was garbage on the balcony. The property is unbelievably run down. They have a run down mini putt course but it is broken and covered with stones. after asking for it to be swept no one came. I even volunteered to ask myself

They have started to make some much needed renovations and have increased the prices for dining to rates that compare with a topnotch resort. They have multiple $30+ things on the menu but the service is terrible. Where in the world does one wait for 15 minutes for one's food order to be taken and then an hour plus after that for the food. The management seems to be completely inept. Again it's really too bad because they are squandering a fantastic location and built-in history that could make this place a destination.

Interestingly enough when we arrived on Friday night, the only concern I had was a remote missing control which a staff member promptly brought me when I called the desk.My travelling companion across the hall found dirty bed sheets, dirty towels on the bathroom floor,no air conditioning and at first sight no remote control but subsequently found in bathroom garbage can. They could not find another room for him and so he need to share my room. On Saturday morning,a young lady asked if we would be staying Saturday night and I told her yes.She stated there had been many mixups the night before and needed to ascertain who would be staying. She promised to come back later to change beds, etc. When we arrived back at 10 PM she had not come back. I called the desk, the clerk apologized but nothing could be done. I did ask for fresh towels and when they arrived, one was too dirty to use.The hotel was obviously overbooked, understaffed and unable to cope with any issues at hand. When I checked out and informed the desk clerk of my experience, she could only shrug and apologize. Obviously this hotel is lacking in any form of quality control. The carpets are old and very stained and in need of replacement. The ceiling tile above my bed looked like it would fall at any time.time for a huge makeover and hiring of more staff. I would not return.

My husband and I just spent the past 2 nights at this poor resort. We were going to my sisters wedding and this is the resort that we as a family were staying at. My father and hiswife, aunt and four other siblings and spouses were all staying here. We were told that we would be staying a four bedroom, four bath cottage with a common room and a fireplace. Well it did have the 4 and 4 but with walls separating us. There wasn't common room at all unless you count the wrap ariound miniscule verandah. Also fireplace only if you burn the trees down first. in our hovel, there was no actual calbe to the tv, (missing), wrong remote, no bulb in the closet, bunk beds for adults, not good sleeping experience, no garbage can, no phone and those are just to name a few.

My fathers room need an extra cot but it took them until the next day to have one arrive. (one night too late) When we went to the front desk to tell them the problem with our room they said that maintenance would get right on that and yes the cot had been delivered the night before (it hadn't). We still did not have any of the problems corrected with we left this morning. It was really disappointing.

The food was aboslutely horrendous for supper and way overpriced for breakfast. $14.95 for a buffet breakfast when I have been to them and they are $6.99 usually. The speed bumps are in need of repair, the roads are in need of repair. The place is located in a beautiful spot. If they had somebody who had the time, money, interest they could bring this lovely place back to a vital hotel.

We held our staff conference at Clevelands House June 3-6, 2013. Prior to our arrival at the conference, the management corresponded regularly with us to ensure that we attended to important details. The management was responsive to our questions and followed up. They tried very hard to understand our theme and goals for the conference and made excellent suggestions. We used a large number of rooms for workshops and there was a great deal of flexibility in terms of the sizes available and the timing of refreshments and meals. The arrival of the conference participants was all managed efficiently. We were able to assign rooms for our guests using a template offered by the resort. The cottages are family style which affords opportunities for team building. They are very comfortable and clean.

The new dining room and bar was an added bonus this year. The food throughout our conference was superb. The conference participants frequently commented on the quality of the food, both at mealtimes and the refreshment breaks. Clevelands House was able to accommodate special diets and choices.

The service was exceptional and all requests were addressed immediately. Encounters with all personnel including management, servers, the bartender, chambermaids, landscaper, and front desk, were very positive. Guests are always greeted with a friendly smile by staff who appear to love their jobs.

We enjoyed our stay at Cleveland House and plan to return in the future. I highly recommend Clevelands House as a conference and meeting destination.

Room Tip: The terrace suites are beautiful rooms which look out onto Lake Rosseau. At the other end of the co...

Probably the only bad thing that did not happen to us. No mice! We looked forward to a few days in the Muskoka Lakes. We had not visited for several years and this resort used to be top notch. Wow is it ever run down and does it ever need a severe makeover. The rate was very competitive and now we know why. It took fifteen minutes to check in. The room was very small, without the promised microwave. We expected a coffee maker and a decent ventilation system. By the third day, we had too leave due to the musty smell and the effects on my asthma. The parking lots are in need of repair. The lawn overgrown with weeds. The executive golf course was not maintained. There were no canoes or watercraft. We signed up for the breakfast program, which did not start until 8 am. We had other commitments and were given a refund. The dining room would not take us for dinner, due to conference events. We tried to enjoy a Jacuzzi experience. One was broken, the other had green water and appeared to be contaminated. The Health Department would be interested in these problems and others we cannot mention due to space limitations. We have reservations for July 1st and beyond, but will cancel them. The management must really give their heads a shake.

We stayed at the Clevelands House resort in Muskoka this past weekend. NOT a positive experience at all. Power outage the entire night and absolutely no compensation or effort to make our stay any better. The General Manager was not helpful and dismissed my dissatisfaction and simply walked away.
I posted this same review on their FaceBook wall in hopes to get a response, although it was simply deleted from their wall.
Now if thats not unproffesional, I don't know what is??
I DO NOT recommend

Room Tip: The rooms/ cabins are all beautiful, the staff is amazing, its just the front end staff and managers...
