We didn't quite expect our Laurentian "chalet" to be tucked a few hundred feet behind the ugly industrial area of Ste. Agathe but we bit our lips and proceeded up the hill to check in. The staff were friendly enough but I was put off when asked to pay for the entire week up front. OK OK relax. Kids and dog are in the car anxiously waiting to unload after a 7 hour drive from NYC. After confirming payment, the office staff presented me with a fake log for the fireplace and sent me on my way to chalet 11. I thought it was odd that it had not been delivered to the room as I made my way back into the car and passed the log over to my wife. We parked in front of the chalet and I brought the first load inside only to be overcome by stale cigarette smoke. I mean it was horrible. I immediately went to the office to complain. I had to physically go to the office because our chalet was not equipped with a telephone. "OH!" said the man, "the clean up crew must have forgot to plug in the air ionizer. I will send them by immediately." This puzzled me. Is it really possible to eliminate the stale smoke with a zap from an ionizer? In a word, NO! It was merely a pacifier to make me think they were doing everything in their power to make things right. We went to the store and and armed ourselves with candles and air deodorizers but nothing could get rid of the smell. I kept complaining and was offered a magical aerosol spray. If we didn't have our small dog with us we would have left but it would have been impossible to find a place last minute that would take a dog, so we stayed. My wife sprayed the dusty plastic plants that seemed to be everywhere, we wiped down the surface of the cabinets, windows, and the cheesy leather sofa but nothing could touch that smell. In our haste to leave on the final day I left a battery charger for our camera in the chalet and emailed the office a few days later. Their response was for me to call one of the maids. I called, and she didn't speak english. Further emails to the office have gone unanswered.
I didn't think places like this existed anymore. Obviously from some of the reviews people seem to like Domaine Ste-Agathe and I won't attempt to dissect the demographic of their normal clientele, only to say that if you value things such as cleanliness, customer service, and integrity you would be well advised to think twice before booking here.
