We had the incredibly luck to stay at the Island Lake Lodge for the past week. What a delight. We had a lovely view from our room in one of the three lodges that make up this amazing place--Cedar 3. Each morning we had breakfast and ate dinner on the deck of the biggest lodge, looking out on the Lizard Mountain Range. The food was outrageously good and the menu is very creative. We ordered something different every day with maybe a repeat on the lemon tart and the frozen chocolate mousse. The view is of spectacular, craggy mountains that people who are much better skiiers and boarders than we are ski/ride in the winter. Takes my breath away to even contemplate the courage and skill it must take to do the CAT skiing they do here! The place has been in lots of movies and books and there is quite the story to this 7,000 acre creation.
We were content to paddle the canoe around (no fish rising but tons of may flies) and to see a bull moose swim past us. I took a hike with a guide (Megan, she's GREAT) that was very reasonably priced, and learned a lot about being bear-aware and flowers and trees. There are many different hikes to do from easy to challenging. The hot tub was also a great draw, we were always the only ones in it and one time watched a big storm move through under the cover of the deck. Fantastic!
There is a really friendly Lodge atmosphere here. The staff seem to work well as a team. There is a youthful vibe.
Make sure to remember that the Lodge is a 10-mile trip in and out, especially if you are doing anything in town like going fishing with a guide. There was a bit more driving than I'd hoped but it was all worth it. Sometimes the music during breakfast was a bit more jaunty than I would have liked. The mountains are so surreal, just low-key music would have suited my morning mood better but I know that everyone is different in this regard. Lastly, the pillows were BIG and hurt my neck though I never did ask if they had something smaller. Usually this isn't a problem for me, kind of weird.
