My wife and I had New Year's Eve dinner at Bistro St. Jacques. I called and made reservations, and inquired about the menu (which I could not find on line). As of noon on new Year's Eve, it had apparently not been printed - let alone posted - having only been determined the day before. No matter - I was told that there would be two set menus. One would be a six course meal, the other a three course meal. When we arrived and were seated, the menus were presented, but it appeared that only the six course menu was available. I went to the bar and asked, and was provided with the three course menu to review. I thought it strange that I had to ask. (The two menus were the same, except that the six course version added three "intermediate" dishes. In both cases, each course offered a choice of dishes). Service continued to be erratic throughout the meal, as the one waiter tried to manage a busy and exuberant room full of diners. I got the wrong first course, an offer of a second basket of bread was forgotten, and my wife's martini arrived without any olives. The apologetic server explained that the bar had run out, but five minutes later a martini was served at the adjacent table complete with a couple of big, fat green olives in the bottom. Those were my only complaints, however, and the quality of the meal more than made up for these small oversights. My starter was unusual. Braised beef shoulder on risotto isn't what comes to mind when you are thinking about the usual range of "befores", but it was very good. Unfortunately, it wasn't what I had ordered, which meant that my main course, which was roasted elk on a parsnip puree, was a bit of a "do over". It was, however, also very nicely done - very flavorful and handsomely presented. Desert was a simple caramelized pear flan. All of the portions were sufficient without being too large, and the overall impression was that the meal (augmented by one beer, a shared bottle of wine, a small basked of very nice warm baguette and sun-dried tomato butter, and a double espresso), was what I would call "just right". The atmosphere was convivial and upbeat without being annoying. As mentioned, service was a bit erratic, but very friendly none the less. The wine list is on the pricey side, with no selections less than $30.00 per bottle, and runs heavily towards French wines (perhaps not surprisingly). I have now been to Bistro St. Jacques on four occasions, and I would happily return.

Chock a block full every time we went. Reservations recommended. Great menu. Great wine list. Perhaps the best steak and frites in the Ottawa Gatineau area

Food is very good. Original as well. But the wine (if you want something else than the house wine) is very very expensive and they do not have a very nice wine list. It would need to be revised. I am just sharing because the food is good but kind of exepensive if you go for dinner and with a good diner you want good wine but paying 40$ for a half liter is way too much for my blood. Also the fact that he only told us after we drank it that it was so pricey..
