My husband and I and some friends went to Ekko for dinner after buying a Groupon. The deal included cocktails, a bottle of wine, dinner, and Brazilian coffee. We went on a Sunday night. The buffet was delicious and offered salad, all kinds if accompaniments, rice, potatoes, a cheese board, smoked salmon, and much more. Cocktails and wine were perfect, as were the yummy (boozy) whipped-cream-topped coffee. Our server was friendly, all the meat was cooked to perfection and so tasty!! The roasted pinepple was amazing. We all really enjoyed our meal and will definitely go back. There was a small band playing Brazilian music all night, which was nice. The only downer, is that they appear to have skimped on the chairs, which feel cheap, sink down in the middle, and aren't very comfortable. All in all, I would recommend this place for a nice dinner out with family, friends, or that special someone.

Ottawa and Ottawans, myself included, tend to get GIDDY when we have a new / novelty cuisine style in town. We're a small town mind hiding in a big city body, all geeked up when we get 'noticed' by chain stores like Wal-Mart!

Ekko has been open for a few years now and the bloom is off the rose. When they first opened I admit I was excited, having fallen in love with Brazilian "meat orgies" and sampled a few of the better Churrascerias around the continent.

I've been back 3 times and the experience has been progressively worse, such that I will not be back again.

If you have never been to a Churrasceria this one MAY be worth a try, you MIGHT enjoy it. The Saturday night service with live dancing and a bigger crowd may appeal to you.

BUT

If you have been lucky enough to go to one of the better Brazilian joints, take a pass.

As noted in other reviews, the self service bar is small, infrequently restocked, and truly lacks variety. It is a cross between a Golden Corral and a Dennys', with one or two Brazilian dishes but mostly salad and salad fixins.

The service is really a mixed bag. One night you might get a friendly go-getter that hustles, on another night an aloof "artiste" who resents your speaking English. There is no real pattern, rhyme, or reason to the way in which the servers organize their forays into the dining room, so you can literally wait an hour before a particular dish makes it's way to your quadrant, and when they are busy, there is a better than even chance that the waiter will run out before he makes it to your table. Each visit the quality of the meat cuts has been worse and worse. Regularly they have served strange cuts or bits that you know are not Brazilian. Next month you might see poutine or tortiere on a skewer. The meat has been gristly, not well aged, and very few premium cuts. And yes, occasionally they 'rush' a skewer out and you get your beef blue, whether you like it that way or not....

Another sad sign is the frequency with which they are promoting themselves on Groupon; when a restaurant is selling meals at half price (which usually means they are taking in HALF of the Groupon price, so 25% of their normal revenue per meal) it means things are not going well.

We went there on a Saturday night. It was crowded and there is not enough space between the tables. Too many people, line up at the buffet. They don't fill up the plates on the buffet table, so when you finally get there, there is a lot of empty bowls.
This is very expensive for what you get. They don't come very often at the table with the meat. The meat was chewy or almost uncooked. The service is bad (we had one waiter for a table of 30).
It is noisy and the entertainment is not great.
I will not go back.

We went to Ekko de Brazil on Saturday night and had a wonderful time, the service was some of the best service we have had and the food was incredible. What made it even better was the price as we had brought a Groupon coupon and only paid 1/2 price. The cocktail, bottle of wine and Brazilian coffee that were included were excellent pairings. The variety at the buffet table was excellent with hot and cold choices as well as fish for the non-meat eaters. The sirloin and rib roasts were so tender it was like cutting butter and the charbroil flavour was absolutely fantastic.

All in all an very good experience and we would certainly go again.

Pricing:
Used a Groupon for two (including 2 cocktails, a bottle of wine and 2 Brazilian coffees) so it was worth it (just even for the alcohol) but otherwise the price tag might be a bit much if you are not a big meat eater ($35 I think).

Concept/Food:
The concept is all you-can-eat meat brought to you by servers on skewers and there is also a buffet for salads and a few other hot food items (such as potatoes, baked salmon, etc.). Most of the meats were nice (do not try anything that is cut too small - e.g. pork parmesan sounds great but the portions were too thin so they were basically hard by the time they were served). Choose big pieces of meats where you can get slivers of your choice and they tend to be more tender that way. They give you two coasters (Red/Green) and you turn it on the side Red when you are eating and do not want to be served/disturbed or Green when you want to try more items.

Ambiance:
Apparently there are dancers on Friday and Saturday nights but we were there on a Thursday (quiet). On Sundays, children eat free and there is a live band. We got a very nice enclosed booth so as a couples night, it worked well.

Service:
Our waiter (Alain) was very attentive but I tend to agree with other reviewers here that the servers with the skewers can be a tad abrupt. Also many are French-speaking only (I am bilingual so it was not a problem) so there might be a language barrier when asked in English only.

Will give it another go when they either have the dancers and with friends/out-of-town relatives (a couple of Groupons to share the alcohol would be good) or on a Sunday and bring the kids.
