“Beautiful cottage, great locale!”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

We stayed here for 4 days over Christmas while visiting family for the holidays, and have nothing but good things to say about it.
We had cycled by in the summer while on a visit to check it out, and were impressed with the beautiful gardens, and how well kept the property seemed to be, so decided to book it for our next visit.
We stayed in the dockside cottage, and it is even better in real life that it appears in the pictures. The room sizes were bigger than expected, and the decor is lovely and of a high quality, and the place is meticulously clean, and of course there is the locale - right by the water, with a lovely view, and a great big deck to enjoy it from. It was awesome too there there was a hot tub on the deck, which we took advantage of a few times.
We found Mike and Kathy to be lovely...friendly and welcoming, without being intrusive, and very interesting to chat with. I am surprised that another reviewer said that all they wanted was payment right away....we offered to pay as soon as we arrived, and they said "don't worry about it, whenever it is convenient".
They gave us a few suggestions of things to see and do, and on their recommendation, we went to Butchart Gardens to see the Christmas lights, which was magical, and also went to see Miniature Village, which was also well worth the visit - very interesting and impressive.
Now that we have found this lovely place, we plan to stay here each time we visit the area, and can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: We stayed in the dockside cottage, but the other one looked just as nice, as did the guest house - I...

We stayed one night. The property is nice in a quiet location. Comfortable room and a large kitchen, sitting, dining area. We had this to ourselves, but it could be a bit crowded if all the rooms were let.
The security was a bit lax. The entrance door did not want to open from the outside. However as the external doors to the bedrooms were unlocked this did not cause a problem!
The owners were only interested in taking the payment for the room, as soon as we arrived. Breakfast was left in the kitchen, with some sort of clafoutis, half warm. Make your own tea / coffee.

Room Tip: Choose another B & B

Located smack dab on the Galloping Goose Trail, this lovely B&B is the PERFECT place for a group of friends/family that enjoy gorgeous Pacific NW ocean scenery and cycling. Wonderfully comfortable rooms each with private bath. Scenic large deck that is perfect for lively conversation, or quiet reading. Breakfast was promptly served when advertised and the quality was great. All 8 of us had 0 complaints beside our sore bottoms but that had nothing to do with the B&B. We all agreed we would definitely return. Thank you Arbutus Cove staff and patches and billy for making our stay memorable!

We spent 4 very pleasant days at the secluded Dockside Cottage , the view of the oh so near and beautiful Sooke Basin exceeded our expectations.

The cottage is charming ,clean , well appointed and spacious. The kitchen has all the appliances and utensils you need to make full meals and everything works.

The deck runs the full length of the cottage and is equipped with patio furniture and a hot tub, all again with that view. Just a few feet away you can walk on to the dock , or turn into the woods and walk or cycle the Galloping Goose Trail. The main guesthouse has a small private beach if you like to swim.....the hosts live in the guesthouse a few minutes walk away.
The bed was very comfortable and again that view, we kept our curtain open at night and slept as the moon shimmered on the water. In the mornings the otters would play and feed or venture onto the dock.

Sooke is a great area for day trips, ie: the Potholes, or drive up the coast to Botany Bay , Port Renfrew, hike and walk the many beaches or watch the surfers at Sombrio Beach.

We had a fine dinner at Markus Wharfside in Sooke ,excellent seafood . You can also buy crab at the wharf.
You will find decent grocery shopping in nearby Sooke {10 min. drive} and if you like baked goods try the buttery danishes at the Viennna Bakery.
We are looking forward to a return visit at this supberb location

Room Tip: There is also another great cottage on the property

This is a large wooden lodge separate from the main house giving one complete solitude and privacy. The view was over Sooke Sound, where the seals catch fish and the wind ruffles the water. Everything changes, the colours, the clouds, the water and the wind in front of your eyes; for us it was a frozen three days of our lives, we relaxed and changed as well. Good self-catering choice with fish, shruimp and beef steaks on the gas BBQ: take the hot tub before not after!

Room Tip: Both lodges are excellent

The Arbutus Cove could be great if the hosts were more hospitable. The location is lovely and the rooms comfortable, but the only exchange we had with the owner was to get our credit card info and pay the bill. This occurred the minute we arrived at the guesthouse, and evidently replaced any welcome. The owner did give us a map of the area and told us how to get to 2 nearby restaurants. She then showed us the common areas and our room. We never saw her, or any staff, for the next 2 days. A continental breakfast tray was set out for each room every morning. There was no one to ask for extras or replacements. Guests have the use of a refrigerator and microwave, but not the stove. The guesthouse has a lovely deck and hot tub, and is convenient to the Galloping Goose bike trail. However, we missed the friendliness that we value when we choose to stay at a bed and breakfast.

We stayed in the Arbutus Cottage for 3 nights in July and we fully recommend this place. It is self contained, with fully stocked kitchen, clean bedroom and bathroom, cozy living room and a gorgeous deck with hot tub and barbeque. The little thoughtful touches make it feel like home.
Excellent location and quiet natural beauty make this the perfect place to relax and unwind, or use it as the homebase to explore the area.
