Loved the location and food. Service was really on the slow side - apologies were offered.

“Great little restaurant with excellent food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 25, 2012

This is one of our favourite restaurants in the area. The service is great, the menu offers a variety of original dishes that are all delicious, the ambiance is relaxing and cozy, the wine list is excellent and all this for a good price versus quality. It's preferable to make a reservation.

“Very good food, warm atmosphere and very accommodating”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2011

We used to go to a restaurant called La Biche au Bois, but it closed. It was very very good. They told us they would look for another location and reopen. We think they did! I can't say for certain, but we think these are the same owners/chefs.

A Sunday night of the long weekend and the restaurant was full. Its attached to an auberge, so that wouldn't be unusual, except a number of us had umbrellas, so we had obviously come from outside. Three servers for a room holding about 12 tables. At least two of them spoke pretty good English. They also had an English menu for the squeamish.

The food was very good. A 3 course table d'hôte for $35 plus an amuse bouche. I had the fois gras poelee to start with, (a supplement of $8, but I'm worth it!!) that was melt in your mouth delicious! It was served with a berry compote. Yum! My husband had the terrine de cerf (deer) and it was equally good. My main course was salmon "vierge" which was a virgin olive oil, olives and fresh tomato dressing. Yum! As a main my husband had the duck which he didn't rate as highly but was still tasty. Both dishes were cooked and presented beautifully. Now for dessert, that's where the accommodating came in. We are both dairy intolerant, which alas, all of the chocolate desserts had (sigh!) so they made up a dessert just for us, beautifully presented, that involved fried bananas and caramelized bananas. A tisane finished off the meal (not included).

My husband just reminded me that when we walked in the door, as soon as they heard our name, without checking the reservations, said, oh yes, you have the dairy allergies. That's a HUGE plus to get the restaurant to notice and acknowledge without having to remind them at every dish!

My one complaint was that the room was a bit too brightly lit for my likes. Perhaps we should have reminded them to dim them.

It wasn't warm enough for us, but it overlooks the river, across the quiet street, and has outdoor tables for dinner el fresco.

There is a long flight of stairs from the parking lot, but the front entrance has only a few steps.

All in all a terrific dining experience. We'll be back soon!

“Pleasant, leisurely outdoor dining with French accent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2011

Right off the Petit Train du Nord bike trail, a very short walk from Maison de la Baviere,
this restuarant offered a limited but diverse selection of sophisticated choices - cheese plates, venison tapas, fish soup, an appetizer with 3 different dips....everything was very tasty and elegantly presented. A lovely breeze blows from the river that is just across from the upstairs patio (hence the name)...service was very accommodating albeit exceedingly leisurely. Prices are on the high side for the quantity but the quality was excellent.

“We all loved the evening!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2011

We were seated on the deck. Our server was was very gracious and understanding of our butchered French. In turn, she spoke very nice English. At our table, we had beef, marlin and elk. Everyone was happy with the way each was prepared.
If we are in Val-David again, we will definitely return!
