“A Quick Fun Lunch”
Reviewed November 9, 2011

After our Newcomer's Meeting, a whole group of us went for lunch to Gary's and had good food with great company. The service here is always better then excellent and of course the burgers(their specialty) are always great. We were not disappointed. It's always fun to come here for lunch.

“Avoid unless you're starving and don't care about food or service”
Reviewed September 17, 2011

I realize this is Qualicum but that's no excuse. Two children ordered the highlighted "Belgian waffles". What arrives for $8.95 each is a frozen round waffle that's been toasted so long (possibly microwaved) it's rock hard. Billed as coming with whipped cream it appears as if the spray can ran out and the staff was too cheap to open another one. And that's it. Nothing else. Unless you count the wilted sprig of parsley on the plate. Seriously? Parsley on a plate with a plastic waffle?
Speaking of cheap, we asked for some napkins after the four we were allowed quickly became useless. The waitress actually counted them out after grabbing a handful. She put three or four back after handing me another four. I suggested we would easily use them and asked for the napkins she thought were excessive. You see the kind of place I'm talking about?

I could describe the things forgotten or neglected by the server which turned what I hoped would be a pleasant breakfast experience into a frustrating exercise of asking for things I'd ordered but were forgotten, but only able to do it in the rare moments when the waitress wasn't chatting with other customers (all four other tables - this was not a busy morning). I could tell you how a restaurant that bills it's "bennys" doesn't think it's important to ask customers how they like them done - let alone cook them properly.

I would avoid this place like the plague unless you are starving and don't care about food or your money.

If this is what comes to the diner on a plate, God only knows what goes on in the kitchen.

“Service spotty when busy, but ok for kids.”
Reviewed July 12, 2011

We often go to Gary's when we're in town as there aren't many places to choose from in Qualicum Beach. While we like the casual atmosphere, we have found the experience varies widely depending upon the server and whether there is a crowd.

When it is crowded or the server is busy, the service is often lackluster. They don't seem to write orders down and hence get things wrong. When you order a salad with dressing on the side, there is usually a reason. So when it arrives with the dressing mixed in, well, it's hard to waste it by sending it back, but it's not what you ordered. It's mistakes like this that mar the experience.

I also believe that this place could use a menu overhaul as it is pretty much the same from year to year.

It's still a nice place for a very casual meal with children.

“Often stop here when in town.”
Reviewed July 1, 2011

We often stop here when in town. The food is generally yummy and the portions are big.

The place is wheelchair accessible (including the washrooms).

We've visited Gary's Bistro several times and have always received very good service and have been pleased with our meals.

The atmosphere is of particular interest to anyone interested in old cars. What a fine display!

So for a friendly, casual, dining experience drop in to Gary's Bistro! We've never been disappointed.
