Have taken this ferry before and as in previous trips found it to be clean and quick. Saw two pods of belugas during the crossing. Certainly a most convenient and relaxing way of getting from the north shore to the south shore of the St. Lawrence, especially on a beautiful summer morning.

If you making a road trip to Gaspé it's worth your while to take the North shore road, check out town of Tadoussac and use the ferry to cross St. Laurence river to Riviere-Du Loup (from St. Simeon) and then continue your trip. It's not a cheap but very interesting and fun experience (especially in summer). We took the 9 AM departure, which was late by 15 min.
One needs to line-up about 1.5 hour before the departure time , as it's first come, first on the boat policy, and the number of cars is limited to 100. If there are a few buses or semi-trailers, they take in less cars. Wen you park your vehicle, go up the hill for a fast breakfast at one the few restaurants. You pay on board ,next to the restaurant, which also serves local food that I found overpriced. There is also a gift shop with a local theme items.
We stayed outside on the deck and saw different birds, but sadly no whales. The whole trip took about 75 min. and it's worth it.

Our family has taken this ferry twice now, both times from R-du-Loup to Saint-Simeon. First time we couldn,t see more than 20 metres due to fog. The second trip (2011) was on a beautiful, sunny day. We stayed outside on the deck for most of the trip and saw several small whales, minke perhaps.

You drive on board, then go upstairs and pay your fare sometime during the journey. There is a restaurant and gift shop on board. The regulars will rush to get a seat in the resto as soon as they get on board.

We really enjoyed the crossing. We saw whale pods and beautiful scenery. Make sure you let them know that you are doing the return trip if you are taking the ferry as a tour. They have a kids play room which was perfect because we had a 2 year old with us

If you have plan to see somewhere close to Quebec city or have plan to go toward Gaspe, it is the est way to follow Hwy 138 which in North side of the St. Laurent. It is mountain and view of st.Laurent which is splendid and you pass through foggy way which makes it more attractive .The city of Malbaie in Charlevoix is beautiful to stay in.
