“A glimpse into a brilliant mind”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

Yes, access to Minister's Island depends on the tide - high tide means boat access and low tide enables driving "across the ocean floor". Out timing enabled driving across to the island where a wonderfully informative woman guided our tour. Van Horne was a brilliantly creative man who made his fortune in railways. Due to insomnia, he had a room on the main floor of the house where he could paint and not disturb anyone else. His artistic talents are also seen in the nursery where he painted a border. He bred award winning cattle and designed a system to have milk piped to the house from the barn which is a few minutes drive away from the house.

Unique access for folks who don't live near a tidal zone. Beautiful little island; grand house and buildings

“A trip back in time....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2012

We were at first just interested in the fact that you can walk here when the tide is low... and need to take a boat when the tide is high (Bay of Fundy, duhhhh...) But... this is a fascinating tour of the olden days. Van Horne's summer "cottage" and the description of his accomplishments is truly interesting. Lots of stuff here for everyone.... gardeners, historians, architects, geologists, farmers,.... it's a wonderful site.
