“Fresh food prepared as it should be”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2012

This place is for customers who appreciate fresh food, simply cooked, with a great view of the blockhouse and harbor and aren’t too fussy about service. To be able to sit outside hearing the gulls, and smelling the ocean breezes more than makes up for a lack of service. My chowder had nuggets of sweet seafood morsels swimming in the cream base. Our frittata was flavorful and bursting with fresh ingredient flavors. All the menu items sounded interesting and three cheers for not having a fryer. The lunch menu prices were very fair for an entrée with a choice of soup or salad. My only disappointment was the small clear glass cups in which the coffee was served.

“A nice dinner and a great view”

We had a dinner at the Niger Reef with friends. The staff are always welcoming, and even though the wait was a bit for our meal it was very good and the view of the Block House and harbour was fantastic.

“Nice view, pricy menu, lousy food...but plenty of flies!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

My wife and I worked up an appetite all afternoon in this pleasant little waterfront town and looked forward to a good dinner, but 'twas not to be. This is a tiny restaurant with a splendid waterfront view if it's warm enough to to eat on the outdoor patio, which it wasn't. Indoors might be nice enough on evenings when the swarms of fruit flies are off, but on our visit, they were out in force, buzzing around our eyes and noses, landing on the table, the glasses, the plates, the food, everywhere. The proprieter-chef-waiter seemed to be aware of their presence, as he talked about them, but he appeared to have made his peace with them. At one point, he asked if the flies bothered us, and we said, yes, terribly. He took this in stride and did nothing about it as we kept trying to swat them.

Maybe, just maybe, the insect infestation would have amounted to nothing more than something to laugh about later, if the food had been good -- or even passable -- but no such luck. I had the allegedly fresh salmon, broiled and purportedly glazed in molasses flavored with ginger. Now, I have eaten salmon of every description in a hundred places and this was with out a doubt the worst single piece of salmon or any other kind of fish I have ever eaten. It tasted as if it had been frozen and boiled in dishwater. In between sparring with the flies, I did try to smother it in lemon, salt and pepper to make it palatable, to no avail. My wife made out somewhat better, though not by much, with the establishment's much heralded seafood caserole, which was not especially tasty and was missing anything resembling the advertised scallops among its ingedients but did include an unidentified mystery meat.

All in all, this would not be a bad experience in some inexpensive greasy spoon, but this place has pretensions to fine dining and $20-25 entrees.

“Cute place with an overwhelmed staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

Very nice, cute place in a great location. The poor waitress was by herself and did an admirable job of trying to keep up with the constant flow of diners. The food was okay. But nothing special.

“Local Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2012

This small restaurant is located near the water in a small former tea house used by local ladies. The menu is short but includes locally sourced ingredients and items that caught the owner/chef's eye. The food was nicely prepared-ours were grilled on the porch-and nicely presented. The wine list is just average. Since it was a lovely evening, we ate on the porch looking towards the St Croix River. Overall pricing was very reasonable. The owner and staff were welcoming. Reservations made in advance are recommended due the small size. There are many good restaurants in St Andrews; I think this is one of the best.
