We decided to take a relaxing drive up the Maine coast for our summer vacation. At the last minute we rearranged our timetable to include crossing the border to the Canadien town of St. Andrews By The Sea. The attractions were the opportunity to go whale watching and the luxury small chateau inn called Kingsbrae Arms, (which was recommended by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report).
This is a gorgeous old world antique filled small hotel, perhaps under 20 rooms and suites. We were upgraded to a king bedroom suite which included a large balcony overlooking their gardens and pool, a separate sitting room and a huge marble bathroom. The manager Pamela had been in contact with us several times after our booking to assure we could make the most of our stay and she was an absolute pleasure to deal with. The owner Harry was on premises and came by to chat. All staff were courteous and accommodating.Well in advanced of arrival we were asked to let them know of any food allergies or diet requests. You can book just the room or "half board" which includes breafast and dinner.
If you are making the trip do not hesitate for a second, take the half board option because the chef Guillaume Delaune would be a major draw in any city on this planet. His multi course dinners were exquisite. My husband and I are New Yorkers who have many opportunites to dine at all types of restaurants with excellent cuisine. This chef stands out. My husband and I have different food allergies and each course was custom tweaked to our situation. Presentation, portion and creative flair made for remarkable dining in their beautiful lord and lady of the manor type dining room. As for breakfast, we made sure to request his smoked salmon and sturgeon on the side. My husband visit ed the chef's smoker located just off the garden. Beyond the hotel, a catamaran took a group of 35 people out into the Bay of Fundy and I can still see the 60 foot fin back whale that surfaced just next to our boat. The adjacent Kingsbrae Gardens were lovely to stroll in. Border crossing was easy and fast in such a small local.

We promised to return to Kingsbrae Arms Relais & Chateaux...and just spent the last week in the Carriage House on this property. It's hard to imagine that this visit could equal or surpass previous visits but this Inn is stunning...incredibly comfortable with beautiful interiors and grounds including gardens and pool...an amazing staff and service and the most creative and delicious food - prepared by Chef Guillaume Delaune. The owners, Mr Oxford and Mr Chancey - are charming and helpful...we just returned to Michigan and are already thinking of our next visit. Their kitchen and accommodations are superb. A perfect vacation was delivered by all at Kingsbrae Arms.

Just last week we returned from this lovely venue, and we miss it already! As part of an upscale eco culinary group, we stayed for 3 nights at this amazing place, with 13 couples. Let me say, that everyone was blown away!

From the moment you speak with Harry, the owner, you know that all of your cares will melt away upon entering the front door. Warmly greeted, the staff is there, ready to whisk luggage away....to each of the beautiful rooms on the property. Each room by the way is FABULOUS, and would be hard pressed to pick a favorite!

Elegant, but cozy, upon entering Kingsbrae Arms, one's eyes have a hard time taking in - the delight that surrounds. Layer upon layer of gorgeous items fill the space, with lovely glass doors that lead out to a spectacular garden. Could have stayed forever!

The atmosphere and food....divine. Romantic, soothing, every single thing a vacation should be. Recharge your soul, and stay here! Set in a charming seaside town, you can walk to everything. Just perfect!

LOVED it! So did our 26 guests, so thank you Harry and staff. hats off, and we can not wait to come visit again soon!

If you think there couldn't be an elegant, sophisticated, warm, hotel in New Brunswick just over the border from Maine, an area better known for its natural rugged beauty and hiking, you would be wrong. The Kingsbrae Arms has accomplished this with distinction. The room was elegantly furnished, and in keeping with the era of the house and the surrounding area. Roomy, comfortable, and pleasant. The chef, Guillaume Delaune, is a really a culinary artist, and prepared for us a six course meal each night, each course a little masterpiece. Ever had a codfish brandade stuffed black ravioli? Or a butternut squash soup with hazelnuts and a drop of rosemary oil? And the fresh ingredients come from a meticulously tended herb/vegetable garden right on the grounds.
I could go on about the attentive staff (when my wife discovered that she had forgotten some medications, she called the hotel, and we found replacement medication in the room upon our arrival -- they had contacted the local pharmacy.) but you would do well to experience this for yourself.
The experience was downright sublime. And we are veterans of Relais and Chateaux hospitality.

We have visited the the Kingsbrae Arms on several occasions, and with memories fresh from our most recent visit I can confirm that we were once again blown away by the food, service and accommodations at this amazing property. The experience from start to finish was simply exceptional. The Town of St. Andrews has so much character on its own, and then it is stepped up a level once you enter the Kingsbrae Arms property. The quality and character of the accommodations are truly superb. The food is also a standout. Every single dinner and breakfast plate looked and tasted amazing, especially the curried coconut and mussel chowder, which was exceptional. Finally, the staff and owners went out of their way to make sure all of our expectations were not only met, but far exceeded. We are very much looking forward to our return visits to this hidden gem.

The Kingsbrae Arms is a Victorian House with elegant furnishings
The bedroom suite assigned to us was comfortable and bright
We enjoyed the hospitality and the cuisine was outstanding
The staff are well informed and friendly and they took time to converse with us
We believe the house would benefit by the addition of further facilities for example a gym or spa
The staff in place have the knowledge and ability to provide for wine-tasting or culinary experiences during the day for the guests
We believe extra facilities as suggested would justify the costs of stay for guests

We stayed at the Kingsbrae Arms to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary over one year ago (August 2010), and the fond memories of our visit still linger in our minds. From the owners’ attention to every detail, including the delicious outdoors breakfasts and the gourmet dinners with exceptional wine choices, to the decadent room appointments and overall level of service, this was a well-run establishment with a high level of pride.

The location of the property is ideal, just removed from the hustle of the St. Andrew’s tourist hub, yet close enough to walk anywhere of interest. Right next door is the famous Kingsbrae Gardens, which, for the enthusiastic botanist, is a must visit. The hotel fits in perfectly with its surroundings, and has the charm and atmosphere which is lacking in larger facilities – yet the overall food and beverage quality is to a very high standard. Any concerns we had related to dietary limitations were well looked after, and the fact that dinners are included is actually a great plus – there is certainly no evidence of a guest being a “captive” diner with no alternatives.

Knowing it was our anniversary, the owners went out of their way to make the occasion memorable, and created some truly magnificent dinners with our own custom menus. Pre – dinner drinks in the bar were excellent due to the interesting atmosphere and cross section of guests – the whole property is filled with interesting and quality appointments and antiques which are worthy of inspection.

When we next return to St. Andrews by the Sea, our selection of accommodation will be very easy – there is only one Kingsbrae Arms, and that is where we will be.
