“The Best honeymoon a bride could ask for!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2011

My husband and I had been traveling quite a long distance before arriving for a three day stay at the Kingsbrae Arms. Upon arrival, we were met right away by Jonathan who greeted us very warmly and with hearty congratulations. He very quickly swept us inside so that we could get a look around. He was extremely informative about the history, very comfortable with questions, and more than willing to joke around with us. It definitely felt like we had come to the right place just in those first few moments of stepping through the door! Our room was gorgeous with a view overlooking their flower/vegetable/herb gardens at the back of the house. I have never stayed in a room with such a lavishly appointed washroom in my life! Every little touch, like the cushioned vanity stool and small table with flowers, just thrilled me to no end. Probably one of my favourite things, though it may sound completely strange to most of you, is that after Jonathan or Dominic took care of either preparing our rooms for the day post breakfast meal or during turn down service that night, we would enter the room to soft music that just instantly put you at ease. The fireplaces would be lit (no heat coming off of them since they are the newer style and the weather was warm) and robes would be laid out for us. They even went so far as to lay out my jewelry on the side table instead of leaving it in the clump of chains and dangles that I had left them in the night before! Dinners were beyond exquisite. Chef Guillaume creates masterpieces with every dish, both in flavour and as eye candy. The simplest ingredients are rendered to perfection every time. There was not one item that wasn't simply delectable or beautifully prepared. Andrew's bread was fantastic! The best that I have ever had the luxury of tasting. And to top it all off, we were invited back into the kitchen after one meal to take a look at one of the next nights courses, a freshly caught sturgeon. We stood back there talking for quite a long time, enjoying the company of both Andrew and Chef immensely. Jonathan and Dominc were just as informative and fun to talk with during our stay. The gentle teasing and easy going mannerisms between the staff made our stay the easiest in the world. Harry and David were an absolute delight! The sweetest two guys in the world who were absolutely thrilled to meet us and to pick our brains about where we were doing our sightseeing and to offer up additional ideas. I don't think we could have found a better place to stay during our honeymoon. Absolutely impeccable service, amazing and helpful staff (Pamela even arranged for a special tour for us during a time when one attraction was closed for the season. Alas, I was not feeling well the last day there and we had to cancel.), stunning hopsitality, and the best food that I've ever had the pleasure to taste. Don't hesitate to ask for anything while you're there either! We had tea and snacks sent up to our room almost daily and they even sent us out with goodie bags on days we were traveling quite a good distance. All in all, The Kingsbrae Arms and its staff have made me a true believer in that I can have a "summer house" of my very own with the best of everything! Looking forward to making another reservation with them in the future! Thank you so much for making our honeymoon all the more memorable!

Our two night stay at the Kingsbrae Arms was absolutely perfect. The staff was engaged (and engaging) to satisfy our every need. The food was fabulous -- every bite. This was our first visit to this hotel, so I cannot speak to the concerns of the earlier reviewers, but I also do not share ANY of those concerns. From the moment we arrived -- our car was met as we pulled into the parking lot, until we pulled away, we were treated as warmly and regally as we would expect from a Relais & Chateaux property (and we have been to many).
Dining was a superb event, and the excellent chef catered to our dietary needs with aplomb and grace. The food was fresh, inventive, and plentiful. Any whim that we expressed was afforded us.
Our room (to which we were upgraded) was beautiful and comfortable. Everything worked and offered us a quiet repose.
As to value (we did stay during June -- not peak) the price for the room with gourmet breakfast and dinner was astoundingly low compared with other R&C properties. And June, as it turned out was a great time to be down-east!

There are only 8 rooms, and each person is treated as a personal guest of a fine household. To enter Kingsbrae is to feel as if you were invited to a rich aunt or uncles home. Once there, the staff makes you feel so comfortable that you never want to leave. Quite literally, this level of service is "foreign" to us in North America. The rooms are furnished with REAL furnishings, not something that is made in China and copied a zillion times. Each room is different. This was our second visit and the room was totally new to us, yet somehow strangely familiar as the details shone through. Dinner was the highlight. There is no menu, the chef selects for you, and somehow it is flawlessly delivered and exactly what you wanted. Wines tend to be a bit pricey, but well balanced for the meal. Conclusion: a special occasion, or just a way to transport yourself back to the less hurried, haggled days of your life. Recommendation: stay an extra day just to unwind.

Room Tip: Let the owner select. All are great

This hotel / restaurant is gorgeous and absolutely worth a visit. The chef, Guillaume Delaune, is incredible and our every meal there was a special culinary experience unlike anything we have ever experienced before. The staff is extremely attentive, dedicated, warm, and friendly, and they went out of their way to ensure that we had a wonderful stay. We have never before experienced such personal attention in a hotel of such high quality. The town of St. Andrews is quaint and peaceful, surounded by spectacular unspoilt nature. All in all, this is one special place. We will definitely be back.

From the moment we arrived until our departure after six days, the staff and owners of Kingsbrae provided everything we could have wanted, and more. We were welcomed warmly, accommodated with perfectly customized service, fed exquisitely and found the rest and peace that we had sought. Every aspect of our stay contributed; a lovely suite, engaging staff, memorable meals, interesting guests and lots of time to read and sleep. Just perfect!

We stayed one night in #19. Our quarters were nice and clean, and the staff person who helped with our luggage was reasonably helpful. However,
1. For one thing, the shower didn't work. A printed note in the bathroom noted that the town was making repairs and that, if we encountered any problem, we could expect it to be gone within a few minutes. This was not the case. It didn't work at any time during the afternoon or the evening and it was not working the following morning. Since one of us is unable to take tub baths, that person was unable bathe during our stay there. We feel that room should not have been rented to anyone in its present condition and that, at the very least, the owner should have contacted us to describe the problem. The charge of $299 (without taxes) for the room suggests that this lodging could be expected to be in the category of something like the Hotel Germain-Dominion in Quebec city (where we had wonderful accommodations at $285 per night). Instead, we had to bathe campground style.
2. The person who helped us suggested that we might have "drinks" before dinner in the room that appeared to be a "library". No mention was made of a charge and so it appeared to be a complimentary sherry or glass of wine that would have been quite in keeping with what we might have expected from a Relais and Chateaux establishment. I was quite surprised, then, to see that the wine was billed as a "bar" charge of $12 per glass with an additional 18% service charge. Certainly I would have insisted on better wine for that price (I was given no choice about the wine).
3. The meal was good but the published description of possible menu items (especially with an emphasis on possibly having interesting game) led us to expect better.
4. We don't think that a first-class establishment needs to impose a fixed 18% service charge. We do expect to pay at least that when the service is reasonably good, but we expect (as most people do, I'm sure) to judge the level of service charge that is appropriate based on the service that we receive.

We would have complained about these issues to the manager/owner (Harry) but he was not available during our stay. Overall, we had a wonderful time in eastern Canada and our accommodations -- with the exception of the Kingsbrae Arms -- were excellent. Over the past several years, we have taken many trips and I believe that this is only the third time that our lodgings have been so far out of line from what we were led to expect that I felt compelled to write a complaint. I believe that "you get what you pay for" and also I feel strongly that you should receive what you pay for. That was not the case for our stay in the Kingsbrae Arms.

HarryR-C, Owner at Kingsbrae Arms, responded to this review, October 7, 2010
The title of this review is way off the mark. There are most certainly no undisclosed fees at Kingsbrae Arms. Our restaurant service charge is clearly stated in every confirmation letter and on our website. Further I will add that this is the first time in 15 years that someone has complained about being charged for ordering a pre-dinner drink in our library bar. Notwithstanding I gave the reviewer the benefit of the doubt and refunded his two drinks in full. As for the faulty plumbing, yes, we were aware that the town chose this busy tourist season to perform major renovations on the water system, something we could not control during this reviewers one night stay. The problem has subsequently been corrected and water pressure has been restored. Last but not least, this reviewer might have had wild boar, caribou or some of the other game specialties we serve in our set menu dinners had he stayed more than one night. As it was, this guest was served an inventive trio of local crab preparations and Bay of Fundy line caught yellow fin tuna. I make every effort to meet all of our Kingsbrae Arms guests during their stays. One night stays are particularly challenging for me with guests arriving in the afternoon and leaving the next morning. All of us at Kingsbrae Arms work very hard to create memorable experiences for all of our guests, and we are sorry we were unable to do so for this guest. Despite his short stay, I wish this reviewer had brought all of these concerns to our attention prior to his departure and we would have done everything we could to meet his expectations.

Some Relais and Chateaux can be a little starchy and self-important. And some B&B's can get a little too intimate. Kingsbrae Arms is the perfect fit between the two - with attentive service, spacious and beautifully furnished rooms and great food. And it just happens to be set in a lovely town next to wonderful gardens.
