Everything is wonderful here: meats, vegetables, drinks, service and the surroundings. Very interesting location in a beautiful small town (Gananoque, Ontario, Canada), within an old factory. The barbeque is wonderful on every level: taste, consistency, flavor. The fresh vegetables were all cooked to perfection. A lot of thought and work have gone into this charming restaurant and the result is astounding and incredibly flavorful.

I have started stopping in Gananoque regularly on my trips back from Toronto to Montreal (why only eat fast food), and this time Pig Iron BBQ was a great discovery. Loved the ambiance of the place, the full-flavoured foods, the esoteric drinks and beers (try the Ginger Ale!) and the pulled porc.

To top it all off, Shannon (no-bs service) and J.T. (uber-cook) were friendly, welcoming and authentic (there's that word again).

Nice bonus: the Pig Iron is attached to the Socialist Pig café, where we experienced one of the best espressos in recent memory, on any continent. And further attached to these is a très-cool clothing and accessories shop (sorry forgot the name) with unique finds.

What a great surprise stopover.

We stopped for a late dinner on a drive between Montreal and Toronto. There are dozens of the rest stops where you can get fast food, but if you want something better, Pig Iron BBQ is a great place to go. The food was really delicious, its not too far from the highway and in a charming town. My partner and I ordered a plate of beef brisket (1 pound for $14) and a side of collard greens and candied yams ($5 each). I have to admit that candied yams are an indulgence that not everyone will appreciate, but with savory meat the flavors mix so well. The food was delicious and there was way more than we were able to eat. We ate about 2/3rds and took home the rest. Most of the sides are between $4.50 and $7.50 they all seemed to be in a southern comfort food style. They are open until 10pm.

A good place for lunch, coffee + cakes are available from the coffee shop in the same building. We aren't connoisseurs of smoked food but it was better than eating burgers for lunch, great ginger beer too!

It was really good food, just very spicy, my boyfriend LOVED it, but spices don't fair well with my stomach, the chicken is still really good!
