I stayed at the Auberge L'Etoile for a week this March, and really found this to a basic, older hotel that is in need of serious updating. This hotel has three or four basic room categories, and my company booked us in the basic standard rooms, which are very reasonably priced. They are however the oldest rooms in the hotel and really kinda funky. First, the rooms have old fashioned key type entry instead of a more secure electronic key system. Second, the doors don't close very well, so be sure to close the door fully before leaving. (I came back after a day out to find the cleaning crew left my door partly open).

The rooms are very basic with 1 or 2 beds, a small work desk and table, TV with both English and French channels and a small bathroom.
The beds are very uncomfortable with old, kinda thin blankets, and very lumpy pillows. The bathroom is tiny with old, thin, tiny towels and the hot water goes in and out.

The only real plus side to this hotel is that it is right on Lake Magog and can be very pretty in both the summer and winter. Also, the free breakfast that is included is quite good.

All in all, I'd look at other places. This hotel just isn't quite worth the money.

This hotel was recommended by friends...after reading comments on this site we hesitated in booking here. What a mistake this would have been.

Following comments made here we asked to be in the new area.

The staff proved to very nice, we got an upgraded room at no cost without even asking.

The front desk person was helpful in everyway possible and the room was very nice and clean with a great view on the lake.

No reason to compain here on the contrary, would go back any time.

The room i was assigned was smelly. The girl at the desk refused to give me another room without charging extra. No manager was present on a thursday night ? Not very pleasant service from the frontdesk.

One thing that is incredible, they have NOBODY during the night. The frontdesk is closed and you can call no one but the police if something happens or your neibours have a fight.

They have a nice location but are way too expensive for what they offer.

Anyway, we will return to Magog-Orford but not to this location.

Avoid, that is my advice...

We booked a Superior room for 2 nights, the rate was $160.00 per night. Other than a lake view, which was obstructed by a hugh pine tree, what we got was not worth the price.
There was nothing 'luxurious' about the room. There was no clock, no coffee maker, no computer access (as promised). No wine glasses or bottled water; all things that should be available at this price.
The bathroom was constructed with cheap materials (no granite countertop here), there was a chip in the sink. The amenities were cheap; packets of shampoo and tiny bars of soap (not replenished the second day), only two small, thin bath towels and no hairdryer.

And to add insult to injury, the restaurant charged $3.00 for a take-out coffee.

We've had much better stays at Comfort Inn's.

I have been many times to Auberge L'Etoile sur le Lac and it is always a pleasure. There is rooms in the old section and rooms in the new, ask for the new section with a view on the lake. The frontdesk staff is friendly and always willing to help, the restaurant is good and the view from the room is incredible in the morning. You can even leave your car at the hotel and walk to boutiques and clubs in downtown Magog.
