A L'Ancestrale B & B
Ranked #15 of 37 Magog B&B and Inns
Reviewed August 27, 2009

We had a great time at A L'Ancestrale. Monique is warm and welcoming, and the inn is well appointed, with great details. She has a terrific eye and makes the place charming but not kitschy. Our only challenge was getting the car parked in the narrow driveway. The breakfasts are marvelous--healthy, creative, and delicious. Plan to spend a good hour over the meal, but it will be worth it! She clearly takes pleasure in creating the experience, and we found her to be a warm, attentive, and friendly host. The inn is a short walk to the center of town, so easy access to the lake and restaurants.

wow...very nice experience!!...4 stars...intime, large room, healthy and original breakfast served by the owner Monique. She,s lovely personn. The house is charm, with attractive living room, many books and lvely music. (She traveling a lot) with interesting books and piano.
Those who will be enchanted by this B&B. Very nice music while eating, (breakfast or dinner) a massage, a lot information on the things to see and to do and off course...! the experience of the outdoor spa..our best choice!

For me and my girlfriend, a nice bed and breakfast on very quiet street. I would recommend it. Monique is a very discreet hostess.

I totally agree with the previous review! The B&B is very nice, close to the center of town, clean and with character. Breakfast is elaborate and good (not for the big appetite, but this is typical of the area I guess!) and the outdoor hot tub is really great!!
Monique, the owner is far from friendly though: she refused to tell me what room was available when I booked. She came up with a 5$ fee for the weekend which was not mentioned in the web page saying that she has to update it, she also was very pushy and wanted us to go to her suggested restaurants. When we asked about a "creperie" we heard about she said it was not very good, but it turned out to be excellent and full of locals!!
Finally before leaving she gave us a bill showing only the total, she seemed uneasy when asked to give us a break trough of the bill (which included a dinner, 2 nights and also ski ticket) and she refused to give us a receipt for claiming the Canadian taxes back saying that in any case "they were only 20$"!!!

My girlfriend and I booked at l'Ancestrale in Magog for one night. Our room was equipped with a Jacuzzi. After we set up everything, we found out that the Jacuzzi wasn't working. It was around 11:30 at night so we didn't want to wake up anyone for this matter.. right ? After we explained the situation to Monique, she didn't even offer us a discount even if we were paying extra money for this facility. She became very rude and finally agreed to give us 10$ back ! wow.

The food was great, the room was cleaned. Just too bad that the owner is not very cordial.. is it not the point of having a b&b ?

I give it an overall 4 stars because of its healthy and original breakfast (big appetites won't be fulfilled, though)served by the owner Monique in a delightful tempo and manner, because of the houses's general charm, the agreeable living room with interesting books and piano, and the 2 adorable cats who seem to look after the customers.

Those who will be enchanted by this B&B are spiritual poeple who enjoy Nepal music while eating, a massage and reiki service/course in their room, etc.

Personnaly these 2 days spent at L'Ancestrale were special ones, spending good time with my long-distance boyfriend, and I wanted to indulge in a suite. I had booked by credit card one month and a half before and had asked for the off-season price, which was 110$ instead of 135$ in high season.

So what a surprise, at the end of our stay, to be prompted to pay by debit card istead of credit card AND the price of 135$!! I was feeling uncomfortable so my boyfriend went back to ensure there wasn't al mistake because she HAD told me 110$ (i had even told my mother the price so it wasn't a trick my memory was playing on me)but she argued that it was impossible because of the way the pricelist was buildt, and asked if we were "comfortable" with the price. Well I wasn't, considering that our whirlpool bath didn't even work!! We had just taken a regular bath..

Afterwards we joked about it and chose not to let it spoil our time together but i still cringe when i think about it and feel like i've been a bit ripped off.

In conclusion, a nice bed and breakfast but not worth the price. Of all the ones I have been to, this is not the best one, and i've never paid that kind of price. There are so many in the Magog area that I would recommend trying another one (despite all the regional awards this one won).

Be careful when making reservations at this establishment. My friend and I booked six nights at this establishment beginning Aug 22 and were asked to leave (along with all guests) after the first night because the owner, Monique, was called away. She doesn't have a backup plan in case she gets sick, etc. This resulted in trying to find accommodations on short notice in a popular area. This resulted in us having to stay at 3 different B&Bs to get the 5 remaining nights that we needed. Also, she offered no type of refund. Very disappointing and stressful.
