Brunch with locals

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jun 18, 2018
This is a simple charming unpretentious, popular with locals, auberge where you can meet friends and/or family for sunday brunch. There are 2 servings. Make a reservation. It is a good value. You may pick eggs and bacon, or canard confit and rösti, and glutonise on macaroons (pistachio are best). Thanks Grégoire for the extra macaroons!!

Last week I went there for the third time in Two years. I know it doesn’t sound that often but we tried to go for special occasions so we’ll miss it. For us it’s like going back through time, just like visiting grandmas house. You can taste the love put into cooking your meal. You’re always host by its owners, the service is great and the food is always fresh.

Sunday Brunch recommendations: “ le jarret d’agneau” and “cuise de canard confit”. Highlight: “Yucca frite”.

Must reserve in advance

We had passed this brightly coloured auberge across from the looming church in tiny Ste Catherine de Hatley before, when visiting our son at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, but always stayed in nearby North Hatley. Now on our way to see his older brother in New Brunswick, we decided to take a chance on this place and were very glad we did. Delicious dinner and a simple but clean room (we got the only one of the six left). Lounged in the garden after dark watching a meteor shower, had a good night's sleep and an ample and tasty breakfast the next day. Friendly and helpful owners who work the kitchen (her) and the dining room (him) with smiles and skill.

We were simply looking for an inexpensive room en route to the Gaspe Peninsula but not in a congested area. Since the inn had a French restaurant we decided to make both a room and a dinner reservation ... and were so glad we did! Yes, the room was small, and we were fortunate to get a room in the back, off of the noisy road. But the room was clean, the staff accomodating (and we were appreciative of Greg's ability to converse in English), and - quite frankly, the complimentary breakfast alone was very nearly worth the price of the room. We've seen less elaborate spreads at highly touted Sunday brunches! Our only regret was that we gorged ourselves so much on the fabulous dinner that we couldn't do justice the next morning to the breakfast that was available. Next time Auberge Sainte Catherine de Hatley may be our destination rather than just an overnight stop!

Food is very much so-so. Worst experience was to ask for coffee to be warmed up. They put the cup in the microwave! I go to a lot of restaurants all over the world and I have never ever seen that. Upon our telling them regarding our dissappointment, they ofered us a small jar of jam...
